Saturday Racing Tips - Randwick Racecourse 04/03/23

It’s Guineas day at Randwick already! and wow are we in for a treat at Randwick this Saturday. There are two group three’s, three group two’s, our feature race of the day, THE AGENCY RANDWICK GUINEAS and another supporting group 1, the FURPHY CANTERBURY STAKES. Most of these races will be run over sprint distance with the lone staying race in race 4, there’s a total of $3.5m prize available on the card and I look forward to an exciting day of racing.

BEST BET - #1 - Cylinder
Cylinder looks to cement himself as the number 1 contender for the Golden Slipper here today, he broke through for his first career win in the Silver Slipper resuming after runner up finishes both first preparation runs when Avdulla gave him a great steer. He has heaps of upside as that was his first up effort and he has a sense of timing about him that will carry him in good stead for this.

THE DANGER - #2 - Red Resistance
Red Resistance is the best 2YO in the country right now off the back of that all the way win to take out the Canonbury. He has the right racing pattern for this track / distance and will fire out the gates to the front again and take catching. He’s trialled since the Canonbury and looks to be trucking along as ever.

VALUE BET  - #4 - Cafe Millenium (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Cafe Millenium is an overall query as I’m not sure how good he really is. He debuted at this track three weeks ago and was racing greenly through the race but then gapped them late for an extremely impressive win. the runner up, Don Coreleone has franked the form as she was second place in the Blue Diamond subsequently. If he runs up to what he’s been doing I think that the market may be looking in the wrong direction. He might just come out the gates and belt these.

BEST BET - #2 - Artorius - (NEXT BEST)
There is a lot to like about the resuming Artorius who the Freedman’s have flown over Zac Purton for the ride. He has been prepped in Sydney for this and hasn’t raced since Summer in the UK where he placed in the Platinum Jubilee and July Cup which are two of the biggest 1200m sprints in the world. He looked to truck in a trial win and looks to be the right type to take this out. Marginal top pick.

THE DANGER - #11 - Golden Mile 
Golden Mile is the front running danger to take this out and I have seen a lot of love for this Cummings trained three year old. She comes into this off the back of a 5 week let up since she resumed in the Expressway when coming on strongly from off the speed to end up second to the fitter/deep in prep Mariamia. His trial was pretty ordinary for this but I think that he has been freshened for this race specifically and Cummings is just a monster at the moment with these younger horses.

VALUE BET  - #1 - Cascadian
Cascadian is an absolute weapon for the Cummings stable that saw a very good Spring prep where his last run from that saw him go out West to run in the Northerly at Ascot where he placed fourth behind what looks like one of the best prospects in the country, Amelia’s Jewel. He is always good with fresh legs and loves this track, his trail work indicates he is ready to go and my only query is he may want longer.

BEST BET - #3 - Aft Cabin (NEXT BEST)
Aft Cabin is as honest as they come and has been building towards this race this prep. The Godolphin star colt resumed over the 1200m in the Group Three Eskimo Prince Stakes and put them away with ease before going out to the 1400m in the Group Two Hobartville where he was a short price fav but nothing went right for him there, slipping at the start, posted deep and made to work by Zou Tiger. He now comes into this third up, looks the best in this field and whilst he draws a tricky gate again he looks like he will be able to just slide forward and sit on/just off the speed and should be tough to beat from there.

THE DANGER - #2 - Osipenko 
Osipenko was ridden awfully first up in the Eskimo Prince which didn’t set the tone for how good he actually is. He then stepped up second up to the 1400m in the Hobartville and I was on him there when he was ridden with serious intent and he took out that race when all was said and done. He has a decent gate, the mile doesn’t look unsuited to him based off his Caulfield Guineas run and he should settle just off the pace and can run them ragged late.

VALUE BET - #4 - Zou Tiger
Zou Tiger is an ultra consistent Sydney based Three-year-old who, whilst he only has one win to his name, has raced against the best and only not placed in one of his seven starts. He draws to get one of the better runs from barrier 6 and has lost by a short head in both of his two starts this prep to end up second. The most recent of which he was really only nailed on the line to Osipenko and he now steps up in trip third up and is screaming for a win.

The top jockey in this meeting is James Mcdonald. He is the best jockey in the country and one of the best in the world. Randwick is his stomping ground and whilst he hasn’t been always doing his best work lately this is his home track and if he’s going to perform it will be on a day like we get on Saturday with solid black type racing. I have outlined all his rides below:

It’s not as easy to make a multi on black type race days where there are some super competitive fields so I have opted to go with my most confident runners to place in their respective races and as such have put a lot of weight on which jockeys are booked for the rides and how the horse maps as I think that there is a different element to place betting altogether. Hopefully we get a bit of luck in running and we can cash this fun bet to follow over race day!
