Saturday Racing Tips - Randwick Racecourse 08/07/23

It’s Winter Stakes Day already at Randwick and wow the Group 1 races season flew by fast if we are here already! We have a bumper ten race card set for Saturday at Randwick Racecourse with $1.5million prize money on offer across the races. The feature of the day is the Robrick Lodge Winter Stakes, a 1400m open race in race 8 that will be contested for a share of $160k prize money. The card is supported by a bunch of high class Benchmark races that should see a very competitive and exciting race day. Follow me below as I outline my best betting spots on the card!

BEST BET - #1 - Epic Proportions (BEST BET)
If you have been following me for a bit you know I am a big fan of trying to build a bank roll for the day early when the opportunities present themself and I think that this Maher and Eustace colt is just that. He debuted in the midweeks at Canterbury not too long ago when well backed and he saluted smartly there, chasing hard all run to find the front and draw clear of them. He maps to get the lead even easier this time and will be hard to hold out from the front. Top chance.

THE DANGER - #2 - Cigar Flick
Market has specked the Chris Waller trained Cigar Flick as the one to beat Epic Proportions and I understand it. This filly hasn’t raced since the Reisling Stakes (G2) back in March when she finished just behind Learning To Fly which is easily the best form from this field. She’s had two trials to lead her back into racing and has moved along very nicely in both, hard to beat.

VALUE BET  - #7 - Reine Of Nine
The Ryan and Alexiou trained juvenile Reine Of Nine is one who I think can improve sharply into this and run into third. He’s had just the one run so far in his career, coming two weeks ago at Newcastle in a field of 11 where he set back in the field from a wide gate before improving at around the 600m to start a run when clear 200m later and did more than enough on debut to show promising signs. He has plenty of upside second up, finds a tough but small field which should give him every chance and I like his prospects at odds.

BEST BET - #3 - Manbehindthemoney (NEXT BEST)
Manbehindthemoney looks like a good shot for Annabel Neasham off the back of a good run in a Rosehill 1800m three weeks ago where she launched onto the speed and found a nice sit on the rail three lengths off the leader and kept finding the line to finish second to Grebeni who is a class animal herself. He doesn’t draw fantastically but there also doesn’t look like there is too much speed around him so if he rolls forward and finds a spot to sit he should be too good for them late.

THE DANGER - #5 - Mutamannin
Mutamannin should get his chance and is one of the leading contenders in this field. The Chris Waller trained runner has picked up two wins in three runs this time in and the most recent run came last week at the midweeks at Warwick Farm where he let them get out in front and launched over them late to finish on top. That was over the mile and based on how he ran there the step up to 2000m looks very suitable when hard fit now fourth up.

VALUE BET  - #2 - Kirkeby 
Kirkeby is coming along very nicely for Chris Waller and should be getting hard fit now third up. The five year old resumed at the beginning of last month in a strong Rosehill 1500m race where he missed the start and was hard ridden to the corner where the run told and he faded late to finish midfield. He then raced again a couple weeks ago at the same track out to 1800m where chased hard and improved well into that run when finishing just behind the placegetters and winner Touristic there. He looks set to peak now third up and can run a race at odds.

BEST BET - #11 - Cotehele
I am willing to give Cotehele another chance here and he does look the class of the field. He ran at this track a couple weeks ago in the Civic Stakes where he set midfield and wide, forced to shift wider on the turn when he contacted another runner at the 300m and was run down in the last 100m. I think he does his best work when ridden forward which was also something the jockey noted that day and now he maps to slide right onto the speed from barrier six which I think is the key, from there he should be hard to hold out but this is a strong field and there are a couple others I am giving respect to.

THE DANGER - #5 - Cisco Bay 
I think that Cisco Bay is just going too well to ignore for the Ryan and Alexiou stable. He raced two back at this track at the end of May over the 1400m where he let them get way out in front before starting a powerful run in the straight and winning seemingly with more in hand.  He then raced here again in the same Civic Stakes as Cotehele where he slid forward from the low draw and had a kick in the straight but couldn’t finish it off as well as the winner and runner up to place third. Meets some easer opponent here and should have plenty to offer still.

VALUE BET - #14 - King Of Hastings (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
We have been following King Of Hastings since he resumed and I think now, if ever, is his best shot at winning. He ran first up behind Lady Of Luxury in a strong BM94 where he only got clear air late and once he did he stormed home into third before racing in the Civic stakes here where he looked the winner and was just nabbed by Ucalledit late to go down second. He should be at his peak now third up and there’s not too much more to it, he should run well.
