Saturday Racing Tips - Randwick Racecourse 11/02/23

Racing continues at Randwick off the back of two meetings here last week and I am excited by the Metro grade racing card we get on Saturday with a huge ten race meeting with a total of $3.6 million prize available across all races on the card. The feature race of the day is the INGLIS MILLENNIUM in race 6, an open set weight sprint over the 1100m for a share of $2m prize. There are two group three and two group two races on the card in addition to the feature. The rail is in true position and the track is rated a soft 5, I expect it to remain within this range.

BEST BET - #7 - Hard To Say (NEXT BEST) 
Hard to say is a three year old for the Deamer stable that has returned to winning form. She had a massive win at Sunshine Coast two weeks ago when letting them have a head start on her but looks as if it was only a matter of pushing the button and she absolutely flew to draw clear of them and win by a few lengths. She maps to get a soft run with a bit of cover from the gate and with J-mac on the steering should be immaculate. I expect a big showing.

THE DANGER - #12 - Headwall
Headwall is undefeated in his two career starts for Matty Smith and he resumes on Saturday. In his winter prep, he won on debut at Newcastle over the 900m and did so by a gap with more to offer. He than went to Kembla Grange over the 1000m and was there to be beaten but kicked strongly late to fend them off. His most recent trail was very good for this and fresh legs are clearly no issue. He steps up in competition now but I think he is a talented type.

VALUE BET  - #16 - Another Cognac 
Another Cognac is an honest horse for the Heys camp that has found outstanding form in his last two runs after a short let up from the races. Two runs back he was a convincing winner at Warwick farm over the 1000m where he chased hard to prevail in the late stages of the run to beat some in form horses. He then came to this track and was nothing short of honest, still driving to the line to just miss into second place after being held up during the run. He gets another shot to go over and can beat these.

Espiona just keeps taking my money when I back her but she is an honest horse and she gets in super light for this. THe Waller trained mare resumes here today and she was pretty disappointing last year off the back of a successful 3YO campaign. She’s been given a long spell for this and she absolutely hammered away with what looks like plenty to offer. 

THE DANGER - #2 - Mr Mozart 
Mr Mozart is a quality four year old racing for the Hawkes stable who resumes off a fifteen week break here and has had just the one soft public trial where she was ridden reasonably quietly but they produced a nice finishing stride on her there. She runs well with fresh legs and at her best she should have something on these. She knows this track well and if she can race anything like her last run in the Silver Eagle there is a good chance she takes this out.

VALUE BET  - #5 - Quantico 
Quantico is a pure dry tracking horse so the weather on Friday and race day will be the key to him. He looks to return to the races here in style off the back of a few lethal trials where they were more of a display than anything else. They most likely look to be setting him up for the Newmarket again this year after being unsuccessful last year but think he’s a top chance to go one better now if the ground is firm.

BEST BET - #9 - Facile (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Facile was about as impressive as they come in her debut at the races as an odds on favourite at this track over the 1000m back at the beginning of December in a fast run time to just miss on the line. She was sent back to the paddock after that but has had the one soft trial to lead her into this and draws the rails, she will give them something to catch.

THE DANGER - #8 - Learning to Fly
The Neasham trained filly was on debut at Rosehill two weeks back and starched them there, taking over when challenged at the 300m and drawing clear of them easily. They didn’t run it that fast that day which is a query but she can definitely take this out with the talent she has exhibited. I think she’s just too short for me to have money on her.

VALUE BET - #10 - Lazzago 
Lazzago wasn’t respected in the market at all on debut at the races at this track mid December when throttling the field with unbelievable late splits. He trialled well last week when looked to just be moving along comfortably through the gears and think she easily could have won that if asked to. This looks to be a fast run race and on the wide track being strong late is a bonus and I think I will have something on.

A clear top jockey in this meeting is James Mcdonald. He is the best jockey in the country and one of the best in the world. Randwick is his stomping ground and there isn’t anyone I would rather be with to pick up a few winners than him.  He gets a stack of top rides for Saturday at Randwick and I have highlighted them all below.

I have opted to make a place multi with my top selections of the meeting as a lot of them are at bigger odds in some competitive races. I have prioritised both the jockeys that get the booking and those that are suited by the run/mapping of the race as lots of these races will have a few chances and any favours a horse gets will be the distinguishing factor.
