Saturday Racing Tips - Rosehill Racecourse 07/10/23

Racing returns to Rosehill for another action packed Saturday as the Group 1 racing season is in full swing and we have a monster ten race card on the program with four listed races: two group twos and two group three’s and the feature of the day is the Petaluma Hill Stakes, a whopping $2 million WFA race over the 1900m. It looks like it’s going to be an incredible card so follow me below as I outline my best betting spots of the day at Rosehill!

BEST BET - #5 - Celestial legend (BEST BET) 
Sticking with Celestial Legend who has the class to belt this field and could have a very bright future, similar to her stablemate Classique Legend who had a similar set up to her and went on to win The Everest a couple years back. He resumed a fortnight ago in The Heritage where he really got going late to clock some of the best late splits of the meeting and now goes out to the 1200m fitter and I think he is one of the better bets on the program.

THE DANGER - #2 - Barber
We had Barber a couple weeks ago when he resumed for Godolphin in the aforementioned The Heritage but he did have to overcame a really bad draw and whilst he did offset it and look prominent at some point in the run, the amount of work it took to do so had its toll on him and he was eased out of things before the turn. He should be a lot more up to the task now with that run in hand but just might be too far back.

VALUE BET  - #4 - Namesake
Namesake is another horse who’s form lines tie into that of Celestial Legend with him having resumed in The Heritage a couple weeks ago where he was priced well longer than how he ran. He was a long way back in the field but the manner in which he found the line was commendable enough to see him run third there. He gets a far better set up from the low draw, nice weight and good jockey and can feature here at big odds.

BEST BET - #7 - Hoo Ya Mal (NEXT BEST)
Everyone following me for some time knows the way that I am rolling with the Waterhouse / Bott giants momentum and if you have really been following me awhile you would remember that I had Hoo Ya Mal when she ran in the Melbourne Cup last year, albeit not being able to do much then. She comes into this third up and off the back of a run in the 7 Stakes when she did well behind Think It Over despite not having the fitness to gon with him late. He will be hard fit third up now and I think the Aussie shores win comes on Saturday.

THE DANGER - #11 - Montefilia
Montefilia is just not a horse I can pick as she hasn’t produced her absolute best in some time but she is rarely too far away from it and can’t be discounted coming back to the course she is trained at. She comes off the back of a run in The Kingston Town almost a month ago when beaten by Just Fine, who we saw what she did as a short priced favourite last weekend. She will be coming on late and the added fitness only aids her cause.

VALUE BET  - #6 - Protagonist
Protagonist doesn’t get the best set up here but his map reads very well for this race and he is going well. He comes from the Kingston Town Stakes where he got too deep in the field and wasn’t a winning chance but did make great ground late. He’s won his only start here and if he handles the weight and gets a drag into the race as he maps to, he’ll be strong here.

BEST BET - #12 - Waterford
Chris Waller sends forward Waterford, who I think has been primed towards this race as he was scratched from The Epsom and kept for this. He comes off a run in the Shannon Stakes a few weeks back where he didn’t have the best manners and was forced right near last before making heaps of ground on the turn. He’ll be hard fit for this and there’s clearly intent from Waller, which shouldn’t be treated lightly.

THE DANGER - #1 - Cepheus
It is hard to knock Cepheus the way he is going. I am just surprised to see him placed here but I guess the stable is working him towards the Big Dance and sees him well placed here en route. He comes off the back of a mighty impressive win in the Group two Shannon Stakes here a few weeks ago where he jumped awkwardly, contacted another runner in the straight but that still wasn’t enough to stop him when winning dominantly. Top chance.

VALUE BET - #10 - Detonator Jack (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY) 
Can’t ignore Detonator Jack for the Maher and Eustace camp in this race. He’s had two runs back from a spell this time in but has been given a solid break between them and now comes into this having been turned around a bit faster since last seen just shy of three weeks ago where he stepped out over this distance in The Sofitel at Flemington and just kept on coming to place third when edged out late and really having looked the winner a long way. Can’t knock him going into this.

Avdulla has found great form this year with a near 50% place rate and near 20% strike rate. He has been super consistent in NSW and that has been recognised to a large extent by the bookings that he has been getting. He gets a top selection of rides for some prominent stables such as James Cummings and Chris Waller and I think he is a top shot to pick up at least one win on Saturday at Rosehill.

Whilst it is scary to tip in some of the bigger field races I think that with it being early in the season and a lot of runners being on resumption that there are some clear top picks in each field and as such I have combined my best runners of the day into a place multi. Whilst it might not be the same level of value we generally get I think that it is a worthwhile bet and has a good chance of coming in.
