Saturday Racing Tips - Rosehill Racecourse 25/03/23

It’s Tancred Stakes day at Rosehill and this has got to be just about the best it gets in the NSW Autumn Carnival now. There’s sprints, there’s staying races and there’s the mid distances in between with our feature of the day being the KIA TANCRED STAKES, a Group 1 open weight for age contest for a share of $1.5million. It is supported by the Group 1 VINERY STUD STAKES, a staying fillies race over the 2000m for a share of $600k and further supported by a bunch of Group 2 and 3 races on the card. It’s going to be one serious day of racing so strap in while I run through the card.

BEST BET - #4 - Stroke Of Luck (NEXT BEST)
Stroke of Luck looks like he has been primed for this race after running at Warwick Farm two back in a 1600m race where he struck interference at the start and then set wide on the straight he managed to run home into second. He then moved onto a BM78 at Rosehill where he made big improvements over the 1900m coming from six or seven back in the run to angle out and hit the last 300m hard but he just couldn’t bridge the gap to the smart Almania. He’s now hard fit and ready for this trip fourth up and also comes back to race against his own age group, draws the rails and I will be interested to see how he goes under Tom Marquand.

THE DANGER - #7 - Awesome John
Awesome John is a great horse who I have backed before and been burnt on but he deserves another shot here. I think 2000m is his ideal distance off the back of his run in the Phar Lap two weeks ago where he really found the line late with purpose behind Zougotcha. If he’s up near the speed by the corner then I think he wins this.

VALUE BET  - #3 - Major Beel
Major Beel should lead these up with reasonable ease and should have the fitness to do so fourth up. He has been great this prep winning his first two over the 1300m and 1600m before coming to this track last time out and finishing fourth in the Stroke Of Luck race mentioned above and he’ll be all the better for it now. He will be hard to run down from the front here.

BEST BET - #3 - Pavitra - (NEXT BEST)
I think that Pavitra for Richard and Will Freedman is going to go very well against these third up now and hard fit. She’s off the back of a 1600m win in the Kembla Grange Classic which was honestly just brutal, she had lengths on them and just kept getting stronger as the race went on. The step up to 2000m looks really good from that 1600m run and this race isn’t too strong. EIther way, I think she will be in even better races than this.

THE DANGER - #1 - Prowess 
Prowess is a serious Filly from NZ who has proven she can beat the older horses off the back of the New Zealand Stakes that she won despite doing some things wrong in the run and fuddling around near the speed she still motored home to the line to win and she was clearly the best horse in that race. She also has a win over the proven group horse Legarto, is proven up in trip and will be hard to beat here.

VALUE BET  - #6 - Soul Choice (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY) 
Soul Choice is a Tasmanian Filly who is looking for a hattrick after making it two from two at the 2100m. He’s drawn wide however here but I think despite him settling back in the run I think that he should find a bit of cover and with his fitness and confidence he will have his chance to motor home to the line.

BEST BET - #1 - Gold Trip (BEST BET)
I think that Gold Trip is much better suited this time with their being a little bit of give in the track. He ran home home a mean sub 34 second last 600m in the Ranvet last time out but just had no chance of being the finish there so can forgive that run. Prior to that he was excellent in his return to the races in the Peter Young Stakes when second to Steinem and 2400m on a softer track means he will look the winner for a good chunk of this race.

THE DANGER - #9 - Cleveland
Cleveland deserves a bit more respect here than he’s getting by the market. He’s a very good stayer for Joseph O’Brien that could have his eyes towards the Sydney Cup and even may go onto the Melbourne Cup towards the end of this year. His Irish form reads very well for a race like this, he’s from a leading stable and he’ll be super strong late. All things equal 

VALUE BET - #2 - Knights Order
Knights order will appreciate the cut in the ground here today and has continually improved throughout this prep after his Plain return in the Chipping Norton he went on to run a great race in the Sky High Stakes two weeks ago when he lead and kicked strongly to only go down late to the fitter Protagonist. He’ll likely lead and look too hard to run down.
