Saturday Racing Tips - Sandown Racecourse 27/05/23

Metro Grade Racing continues at Sandown for another week of competitive, high-level racing and we have the Tobin Brothers Bel Esprit Stakes race as the feature of the day, an exciting 1000m sprint for a share of $175k prize money. There are a bunch of good staying and sprinting contests on the card to support our feature of the day and I am excited to run you guys through the card. Follow me below for my best bets for Sandown Hillside’s Saturday racing!

BEST BET - #10 - Greyt Mumma (NEXT BEST)
Some very good types going around in this early sprint but Greyt Mumma is a horse I have been following all season for the A & S Freedman camp who is going exceptionally well. She resumed off a near year and a half spell at Stony Creek first up where she belted them after beginning awkwardly and has since backed that win up with another dominant site at Cranbourne from out front where she never looked in danger. Third up and staying at sprint distance and after the jockey claim she will be running with no weight on her, keen.

THE DANGER - #4 - End Journey 
End Journey, like Great Mumma is two from two this campaign and this is also her debut prep at the races. She won first up in very fine fashion at Cranbourne back in Mid April before coming to this track and clocking a dominant all the way win in a very different style of running to her debut. She seems a very smart type, draws well and with Lloyd on she gets in light.

VALUE BET  - #8 - Tanto
Tanto is holding her form nicely this prep and gets a good chance to go one better now after just missing when racing at this track a couple weeks ago and chasing hard all run but just couldn't get one over the aforementioned End Journey. She placed third in the Vobis Gold Dash at this track just three weeks prior and only has to hold form to be around the mark.

BEST BET - #3 - Euphoric (BEST BET)
Euphoric looks to have had the perfect set up for a race like this for Greg Eurell. The three year old has been awesome to follow this campaign in just his second preparation at the races off the back of a very successful debut prep. He’s had two runs this time in, over the 1200m then 1400m and both were full of merit when winning quite dominantly in both. He has been running like he wants longer, winning form is good form, and should be hard fit an ready for the step up in trip third up now. Spain has been with him all prep and sticks and I am keen to see how they go on Saturday.

THE DANGER - #1 - Dashing
I can’t knock Dashing who just keeps holding form and has been racing at distances slightly past this but I think that dropping back to 1600m shouldn’t cause too much trouble. He last ran three weeks ago here over the 1800m under Declan Bates and put a few lengths on them early, only had to hold on late to win and won well there. Before then he really should have won the Mornington Guineas but Linda Meech just butchered the ride. I think with Lafferty on and the claim they should go well again.

VALUE BET  - #2 - Elkington Road
I think Elkington Road should be priced a lot closer to the other two I just mentioned. The three year old trained by Michael Maroney does his best work at this distance and is a progressive horse. He ran in the same race that dashing won a few weeks ago over the 1800m at this track and the shape of the race was very bad for him there. He now goes back in trip which is very positive and should settle a lot closer in the run, if he’s on the speed on the turn he will be a threat.

BEST BET - #6 - Invincible Caviar 
It may be a case of just how good Invincible Caviar is, the son of Black Caviar has had four wins in six career starts with one of those starts being a race he was completely eased out of due to injury and comes back here now for a first up run after 23 weeks, won in his debut prep first up, wins strongly and never races badly. His splits that he has clocked so far averaged across all races see him very good for this, draws barrier two and as long as he doesn’t get crowded out I think he can be too classy for these.

THE DANGER - #7 - Katsu
Obvious danger / leading contender on paper in this race is the Grahame Begg trained Katsu who is going to be a black type horse for a while at the rate he is going. He was a dominant winner when fresh at sale and then came to this part of the Sandown course on a wet track where he didn’t love the conditions but was still far too good for them and class got him home. Forecast to have his toe back on top of the ground and he could thrash these without surprising.

VALUE BET - #4 - Taunting (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
If Taunting shows up he will be very competitive here. The Hickmott trained Gelding has been gently given time between runs this prep and comes into this off the back of the Wangoom at The Bool where he couldn’t really get going in the mud behind Outlaws Revenge but still showed his heart there when fighting to the line regardless. He gets back on top of the ground now which is positive, should be very fit and in tune and has contested harder races than this, this campaign.

One of the most significant considerations in picking up multiple winners is the track bias, which favors horses that don’t get too far back in the run at Flemington Racecourse. As a result, horses drawn on the inside have a better chance of performing well compared to those drawn towards the outside.
