Saturday Racing Tips - Scone Racecourse 12/05/23

Racing at Scone continues for the second day of the two day carnival off the back of Scone Cup Day. We have an exciting day of racing for this year’s Dark Jewel Classic day with five group level races on the card and the feature race, the Dark Jewel Classic, being a 1400m sprint for a share of $200,000 prize money. The track is rated a soft (5) and the rail is out +3 meters for the course. Follow me below as I outline my best betting spots on the card!

BEST BET - #1 - Saltaire (BEST BET)
Pretty keen on Saltaire in the opener. She’s a smart John O’Shea trained filly that has had a freshen since the Kindergarten Stakes last year when second to Libertad. She comes back to race against her own age and sex here and looks like she will be very hard to beat. Her trial at Randwick last week was one of the best of the day, keen to see how she shows up.

THE DANGER - #2 - Dipsy Doodle 
Dipsy Doodle is the one with runs on board. She commands respect for James Cummings after recording a strong all the way win two weeks back at Rosehill where she led and still changed through her gears to keep them at bay even though she began to fade late. Gets similar ground here and if she retains fitness off that run she will be ultra competitive here.

VALUE BET  - #8 - In My Dreams
In My Dreams is a Mark Newnham trained filly that looks very interesting out of the unraced portion of horses of this race. Her last trial particularly caught my eye when she led and won comfortably over the 1045m at Randwick. She looks right to go off those trials for a win in start one and she could surprise here, market seems to have her in with a shot as well.

BEST BET - #4 - Wrathful (NEXT BEST) 
Another of the shorter priced horses I am quite keen on is Wrathful who I think is going to be onto bigger and better races than this if he keeps going the way he is. His last run two weeks ago at Rosehill was exceptional when he kept getting held up throughout the run and when he finally managed to squeeze a gap to run he drew clear of the field and clocked a big win. He gets onto a bigger track now, with a few more lengths and will be very hard to run down.

THE DANGER - #6 - Miracle Spin
Miracle Spin isn’t the most reliable of horses but if he can be steered well and be close at the turn he has the motor under the hood to see him go over here. He looked the winner for a long way out in the same race as Wrathful a couple weeks back and was given a great ride but just couldn’t compete late with Wrathful when he drew clear of the field. Will be fitter for that run and goes out to the mile on a bigger track, can’t see him running badly.

VALUE BET  - #7 - Turnaway 
Turnaway hasn’t run badly in her two runs to date this prep. She went for a spell after picking up a win at Armidale and took an eleven week break from the races. She resumed at Armidale with a close second placing before going to Tamworth and recording another close placing with no favours in running that time out. The sectionals read well for this and third up now, with this race in mind, I think she will go close.

BEST BET - #2 - Malkovich
Malkovich will take beating here if he finds the front which he maps to quite easily. He resumed in the Gold Rush at Hawkesbury where he was given an honest test, having drawn the widest barrier but he managed to get a cart across and find the front, control the race and win comfortably with fast splits all the way through. I think he will only improve off that and has a good second up record. Keen on him.

THE DANGER - #3 - Quantico
Quantico hasn’t been seen at the races since the beginning of March in the Canterbury where he didn’t manage to get going behind Artorious but was still beaten under three lengths. However, he’s outstanding fresh and has trialled very nicely for his return. He will give them a few lengths but if he doesn’t spot them too much of a start he will be hard to contend with late.

VALUE BET - #4 - Athleric (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Athleric is a horse that will likely improve big time into this for James Cummings. He comes into this having not raced for just under a month when being in contention in the Gold Rush at Hawkesbury where he got constantly pushed back in the run but still came on strongly behind Malkovich there. He has the class to contend here and just needs a bit more luck in running this time in.

One of the most significant considerations in picking up multiple winners is the track bias, which favors horses that don’t get too far back in the run at Flemington Racecourse. As a result, horses drawn on the inside have a better chance of performing well compared to those drawn towards the outside.
