Wednesday Racing Tips - Canterbury Racecourse 16/08/23

We are well and truly about to kick off with Spring carnival racing if the midweeks are returning to Canterbury Park and I love racing here, it’s not that far from home for me and I am most familiar with the prominent stables that either have locally trained runners or are trained not too far away at Randwick or Rosehill. We have an eight race card on the program tomorrow that features two maidens to kick us off before the remaining races will be contested in BM72 grade. I am keen to get stuck into things so follow me below!

Canterbury R3 - Ranvet (Bm72) (1900m)

Selections:
#1 - The Milkybar Kid (NEXT BEST) - $4.00
#5 - Sophia's Magic - $4.30
#2 - Tip Of The Spear  - $7.50
#8 - Sir Bailey - $5.50

BEST BET - #1 - The Milkybar Kid (NEXT BEST)
The Milkybar kid is an honest representative for the Waterhouse / Bott giants who we faded when he last stepped out two weeks ago over the 1800m at Kensington and that was a good move as he never really got comfortable in the run when running third there. That was only second up and he will get a huge fitness benefit off that run. He draws the widest barrier so will be forced to slide forward under Hyeronimus and will look the winner a long way here.

THE DANGER - #5 - Sophia's Magic
The Waller / Jmac combination comes on Sophia’s Magic in this race and they must be respected here. She’s had four runs this time in but looks to have hit peak fitness only in her last when racing in Saturday grade at Randwick (1800m) where she set third in the run and gave a kick in the straight but couldn’t go on with the quinella and finished third there. That was behind the likes of Mascaret and Bootscooter and she will be at her peak now, hard fit and maps for a good run. Dangerous.

VALUE BET  - #2 - Tip Of The Spear
When Tip of The Spear is on he is simply the best horse in this field. The Neasham trained runner resumed off of an 18 week spell at Randwick in Saturday grade just over two weeks ago where he set towards the rear of the field and two wide from the gate and made up ground to be about 5 lengths off the lead in the straight where he just kept finding the line in a solid first up effort, especially late. He’s a second up winner in one of his two second up runs and he can find plenty here.

Canterbury R4 - Casino Prince @ Vinery Stud (Bm72) (1250m)

Selections:
#4 - Capital Asset - $5.00
#9 - Atlantic Ocean - $3.20
#3 - Iknowastar (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY) - $12.00
#11 - Whinchat - $8.00

BEST BET - #4 - Capital Asset
Competitive field here but I think a lot of things are going the way for Capital Asset for the Snowden’s and at around $5.00 I think he is worth throwing a bit on. He resumed off of an 18 week spell at the midweeks at Kensington where he began very awkwardly but chased hard all run, finishing very strongly through the line in fifth behind Custodian. He’s won one from two second up runs, maps to have every chance from the soft draw and gets a big jockey upgrade to Josh Parr now.

THE DANGER - #9 - Atlantic Ocean
No denying that the Waller / Jmac combination under Atlantic Ocean will be a threat in this field. He’s had two runs back from a long spell this time in and should be nearing his peak here. The first came over the 1200m at Randwick in Saturday company where it was really just a fitness run for him before really clocking up two weeks ago at the same track at the midweeks over the 1100m where struck interference at the start and was taken back but came on so strongly to beat all but the winner and now looks very well placed getting back out to 1200m third up and ready to win.

VALUE BET  - #3 - Iknowastar (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Iknowastar is an awesome horse for Bjorn Baker and I think that despite his pretty poor fresh record, the stable seems to have him seriously tuned up for start one of the campaign here. Last campaign he put together four wins in a row on the bounce before tackling a tough race at Rosehill where he produced an end of prep run and was never headed. Now, he’s had a 20 week spell and has had two 900m trials at ROsehill and then this track where he has run them with real intent and clocked some very very quick times. The stable seems to have him going better than he ever has and can take this out first up at a good price.

Canterbury R5 - James Squire (Bm72) (1100m)

Selections:
#10 - High Plateau (BEST BET) - $3.10
#1 - Destination - $8.00
#4 - American President - $10.00
#2 - Julian Rock - $12.00

BEST BET - #10 - High Plateau(BEST BET)
High Plateau seems like one of the better bets on the program and is only having his fifth overall career start for James Cummings and second start for this prep. He resumed off of a 15 week spell at Newcastle two weeks back where he was forced back in the field and sat along the rail before looking for a run in the straight and he came on well to finish third there. He will have plenty of improvement second up now off that run and long spell and he won in his first campaign second up. Jmac aboard, likely wins this.

THE DANGER - #1 - Destination
Destination is a very good fresh horse for the Litt stable, who, at his best rates a long way in front of most of these. He’s got two wins and a placing in six first up runs and seems to be trialling very nicely for a return to racing. He draws a nice gate and gets Amy Mclucas on for a key smart claim to offset him having to lug 63kg and instead gets in at 60kg. He should find the front quite easily here and be hard to hold out at a nice price.

VALUE BET - #4 - American President
American President should be at his peak third up here since coming to the Bjorn Baker stable and I think he is a definite winning chance at a price. He’s had two runs for the stable and back from a spell where he needed the run in his first outting before stepping out at this trip at Kensington where he had a few issues in the run but wasn’t disgraced and the post race notes were to be ridden further forward. He gets the draw to do that now and Latham will give him every chance.

Best Promotions for Canterbury Racecourse

Promotions are traditionally the primary way for punters to create an edge over the bookies, as they can save your cash when your runner fails to win, in the instance of Unibet they often offer 2nd and 3rd money back in bonus bets for a selection of races on the midweek and Provincial racing days. Coupled with their generous odds I have to put them as the top bookie promotion wise at the moment for Australian racing.

If you are looking for the best promotions this week for Wednesday's racing I wouldn’t look past Unibet, often they offer odds boosts in addition to the money back promotions. Don’t forget to check your account as well for personal offers.

Promotions often change so make sure you sign up at unibet.com.au to see what promotions are applicable to you and you may even be surprised to find some promotions that weren’t mentioned here!
