Wednesday Racing Tips - Canterbury Racecourse 17/04/24

Another Wednesday night of racing under the lights at Canterbury and I am very excited for this week’s card as we see some of the premiere stables in NSW sending forward runners who look to be progressive as the Autumn Group 1 races season is coming to an end a lot of these runners are stepping back from Provincial level racing. I have run through the card and outlined my best betting spots below so follow me!

Canterbury R1 - Hyland Race Colours Mdn Hcp (1550m)

Selections:
#1 - Little Jeanie - $1.90
#4 - Kotaishi - $5.00
#2 - Kings Valley (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY) - $9.00
#6 - Glebe - $9.00

BEST BET - #1 - Little Jeanie
Little Jeanie is a Waller import from New Zealand who I think is overdue for breaking maiden and she rates very highly coming here third up and approaching her peak. She did plenty of work at Kensington first up when powering home into second place before replicating a similar effort last time out at Warwick Farm and she should relish getting out to this trip now. Looks very hard to get past and should be strong here.

THE DANGER - #4 - Kotaishi
Kotaishi looks to get a very solid set up this time in for Ciaron Maher and I think he shapes up as the main threat to the short priced favourite here. He last ran at Newcastle over the 1850m in quite a strong maiden where he really got going late from off the pace to thunder home into third place and I think with the Blinker applied now and coming back a bit in trip with Gibbo aboard all make him a leading contender here.

VALUE BET  - #2 - Kings Valley (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Kings Valley is an Irish import for Ciaron Maher who is lightly raced and comes here for his first Australian start. As the case with many of these, he is probably looking for further but you always have to be weary when it comes to these guys, bringing the overseas form he can win this without shocking. He had a nice Rosehill trial the other week when not asked for any effort but he looks like a big solid horse and I think that with Schiller aboard this isn’t out of reach first up.

Canterbury R3 - James Squire Mdn Hcp (1250m)

Selections:
#2 - Imperial Force (BEST BET) - $3.50
#1 - Catoggio - $5.00
#4 - Dark Arts  - $5.00
#9 - Media World - $8.50

BEST BET - #2 - Imperial Force (BEST BET)
Waller and Nash combine on Imperial Force who is having his second career start for the camp after being beaten on debut at Kensington when stepping out at the end of last month in a very sharp maiden that saw do plenty from on the speed when sticking on gamely in defeat, only finding one better late. He should be improved here and I think will be tough to beat with Nash aboard.

THE DANGER - #1 - Catoggio
Catoggio looks the map horse here and he looks to be set up very well third up for Gai / Bott getting the blinkers on off the back of a much improved second up run where he showed he can really stretch his legs, getting going late to place well there. He now draws barrier one and has the speed for it to suit him and will be tuned up here. Bayliss aboard is a bonus.

VALUE BET  - #4 - Dark Arts
Dark Arts debuted at Randwick at the very end of last year and did more than enough for me to give her a look coming back here for the Hawkes camp. He jumped awkwardly and did race a bit greenly then but kept chasing when very honest in defeat to find the front at the 200m and then be swamped by the trifecta late. He had a nice trial for the return earlier this month on the Warwick Farm Synthetic and I think he will be strong here under Berry.

Canterbury R4 - Headwater at Vinery Stud (Bm78) (1550m)

Selections:
#4 - Huesca (NEXT BEST)  - $4.00
#2 - Hollywood Hero - $2.70
#6 - Tavs  - $5.00
#3 - Kureder  - $15.00

BEST BET - #3 - Kureder
This looks like a battle between the map horse and the class of the field and I am keen to be with who I think is the class of the field in Huesca who comes here third up from a spell and chasing his fourth win at start number 12. he draws the widest in the field which I think is a large contributing factor to his price but given how much natural speed he has I think that he should cross the field and on a tight Canterbury track he can prove too strong if he finds the front early without too much trouble. Happy to have a gamble on the gate.

THE DANGER - #2 - Hollywood Hero
Hollywood Hero is a very progressive animal for the Baker camp so I can understand why he’s being backed into favouritism here. He also gets a good set up for this, with a second up win and runner up placing in two second up runs and coming here second up off the back of his return at Rosehill which I think reads better than it looks on paper. He was really winding up late after encountering some issues throughout the run and when he got clear air he was very strong through the line. Leading contender here but just too short for mine.

VALUE BET - #6 - Tavs
Happy to give Tavs another chance here for the Litt camp and I think that he shapes up as the map horse of the race given he draws the rails here. He comes off the back of a run three weeks between runs at Kembla Grange at the end of last month when stepping out on a Heavy track and chasing hard in a big field to end up just behind the placegetters. He gets turned around quicker for this, with more intent and I think he can hit back hard.

Best Promotions for Canterbury Racecourse

Promotions are traditionally the primary way for punters to create an edge over the bookies, as they can save your cash when your runner fails to win, in the instance of Unibet they often offer 2nd and 3rd money back in bonus bets for a selection of races on the midweek and Provincial racing days. Coupled with their generous odds I have to put them as the top bookie promotion wise at the moment for Australian racing.

If you are looking for the best promotions this week for Wednesday's racing I wouldn’t look past Unibet, often they offer odds boosts in addition to the money back promotions. Don’t forget to check your account as well for personal offers.
