Wednesday Racing Tips - Canterbury Racecourse 21/06/23

The Midweek’s return to Canterbury for a great little midweek card, with $385,000 worth of prize money across the seven races and as usual the structure of the day follows four maiden races to kick the card off with the usual suspects in terms of top NSW stables putting forward some very nice debutants and then followed by three BM72’s with one being a staying race and two exciting looking sprints. I have outlined my best bets on the card below and picked out three races that look to have some standout runners. Follow me below for another exciting day of Wednesday racing!

Canterbury R3 - Schweppes Mdn Plate (1250m)

Selections:
#8 - Princess Rayaa (BEST BET)  - $1.90
#4 - Sumo Star - $5.00
#3 - Scotland - $14.00
#6 - Double Scoop - $4.50

BEST BET - #8 - Princess Rayaa (BEST BET)
The Maher and Eustace trained Princess Rayaa finished just behind the Placegetters at her first up run for twenty five weeks last time out at this course over this distance two weeks ago and looks like she is going to be very hard to beat with natural improvement here. She’s race fitter for the run, gets Tim Clark run and is free running, which only aids her cause from the low draw as she should slide forward and can lead or sit handy from there. I think she only runs well here and am happy to take her at the short quote.

THE DANGER - #4 - Sumo Star
Sumo Star can cause his own problems as he often has some trouble at the start but if he can put it all together for Gary Portelli this time he is going to look the winner at least some of the way. He’s had seven runs this prep for the stable and has only been outside of the placegetters once during that time, having gone so close to a win in multiple of those runs. If he retains fitness here and still has some left in the tank he will be coming on very strong late.

VALUE BET  - #3 - Scotland
Scotland is one of the more interesting runners in this race who has heaps of upside off the back of a meritful first up run at Grafton. The run came in the mud over the 1120m there when he set 10th and two wide but came on so strongly from the back that it is hard to ignore. He should be plenty more fit and will improve sharply into this. Top chance.

Canterbury R5 - Furphy (Bm72) (1900m)

Selections:
#11 - Okataina (NEXT BEST) - $4.60
#1 - Asgoodassobergets - $4.40
#2 - Dillian  - $6.50
#8 - Angel Of Light - $11.00

BEST BET - #11 - Okataina (NEXT BEST)
Okatiana looks like a very good thing going for the prominent Waterhouse and Bott Stable and has exhibited great talent and a very nice run style in his three runs back from a spell this time in for the stable. He went ever so close at Kembla on debut and the writing was on the wall for a second up win at the course before stepping up in town last time out in a BM72 at Rosehill where he was great in defeat, coming on strongly all through the run to finish just behind the placegetters there. Takes a bit of a drop off in competition for this and should be hard to beat with even luck from the draw.

THE DANGER - #1 - Asgoodassobergets
Asgoodassobergets looks like a truly bred stayer for Annabel Neasham. The French import raced at this course first up off a long break and saluted dominantly there, sitting behind the leader on the fence before angling clear and giving nothing else a chance to win. He then raced at Flemington in a tough race which saw him wide throughout and it told late when finishing behind the placegetters. That run should carry him in very good stead for this assignment and I see him only running well here.

VALUE BET  - #2 - Dillian
Dillian is an interesting import for the Maher and Eustace stable who looks to make sharp improvements off the back of his Australian debut at Warwick Farm where he was kept quite safe after missing the start by a length and a half and coming on very strongly late to end up midfield. He should relish getting out to this trip and will be fitter and tougher second up now.

Canterbury R6 - Tab (Bm72) (1200m)

Selections:
#6 - King Of Naples - $4.80
#3 - Lucky Variety - $4.40
#5 - Star Spirit (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY) - $7.00
#10 - Tashi - $8.00

BEST BET - #6 - King Of Naples
King of Naples surely deserves another look here after making his return to racing as a long priced favourite for John O’Shea two weeks ago at the course where I had him as my best of the day and he looked a good thing, sitting on the speed and working well at the turn in an attempt to belt away at the 200m but his fitness just told late when getting swamped inside the last 75m. He should be a lot better for the run, sticks at the same course and I think the much better quote around ~$5.00 is more than good enough to take here.

THE DANGER - #3 - Lucky Variety
I am always happy to entertain a fresh Kris Lees horse and this particular one has been a monster in his past few runs. He has won or come runner up in each of his last five runs and won three of those dominantly. He’s got one win in two fresh runs so doesn’t take much to get going and the last race he ran in before a 21 week spell was a BM72 at Randwick where he was ever so impressive in winning and blitzing the clock. He’s had a bunch of sharp trials to lead him back into this and should be tough to beat here fresh.

VALUE BET - #5 - Star Spirit (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Star Spirit is another who looks to improve sharply off the back of an awesome first up run where she really got to show her heart, overcoming a suck run when being shuffled back in the run to angle out into clear air very late in the piece and jet home for an unlucky placing where she should have finished much closer. She looks very sharp to improve second up off the back of that and the stable is flying at the moment. If one of the favourites doesn’t show up she will be right there.

Best Promotions for Canterbury Racecourse

Promotions are traditionally the primary way for punters to create an edge over the bookies, as they can save your cash when your runner fails to win, in the instance of Unibet they often offer 2nd and 3rd money back in bonus bets for a selection of races on the midweek and Provincial racing days. Coupled with their generous odds I have to put them as the top bookie promotion wise at the moment for Australian racing.

If you are looking for the best promotions this week for Wednesday's racing I wouldn’t look past Unibet, often they offer odds boosts in addition to the money back promotions. Don’t forget to check your account as well for personal offers.

Promotions often change so make sure you sign up at unibet.com.au to see what promotions are applicable to you and you may even be surprised to find some promotions that weren’t mentioned here!
