Wednesday Racing Tips - Canterbury Racecourse 24/05/23

Midweek racing continues at Canterbury for an exciting eight race card and we have two maiden races to kick us off before going onto the remaining races, all in Benchmark grade. There looks to be some nice horses going around for the top NSW stables on debut in the early races, as well as some progressive horses running throughout the day on the rest of the card. There should be some good betting spots throughout the card so follow me below as I outline my best bets!

BEST BET - #2 - Bunker Hut (NEXT BEST)
Bunker Hut is a deserving favourite and I think he will be very hard to beat here, dropping back sharply in competition for Mick Freedman. He tried his heart out at the G3 Gold Coast Guineas at Sunshine Coast last start and was only beaten 3 lengths by a very good horse in Yellow Brick. Third up now, McDonald sticks, can’t see them running badly.

THE DANGER - #3 - Surfers Royale
Surfers Royale has had just the three starts at the races and has been very good up until her last run in which she didn’t get it easy at Scone, trailing behind the speed but being very wide all run and just exhausting herself a bit to hold ground but not really advance anywhere. Prior to then she ran on the Heavy twice and motored home into the placings in both those runs there from off the pace. Maps to be able to settle closer this time in and still should have plenty to give back on the turn.

VALUE BET  - #5 - I Am Jade  
I am Jade is a Chris Waller trained runner that can make big improvements into this race. I think we can forgive the last run at this track when she looked very good on the pace but then faded sharply into second last and pulled up with respiratory issues. Before then she had just missed in both of her two runs prior, coming close seconds in both with one of those runs at this distance. Will be hard fit now and rates well in this.

BEST BET - #5 - Estilete (BEST BET) 
Estilete is an Annabel Neasham trained three year old filly who has looked outstanding in her past two runs after coming back from a short two month let up at the races. She raced at Kembla in the Heavy when running a great time, coming from the tail of the field to charge home in the straight to finish the best. Tried to do the same last time out at Scone but just found one better inside the last 50m. Only has to hold form to be competitive here.

THE DANGER - #6 - Celestial Spirit 
Celestial Spirit is a deserving favourite in this race after Queenmaker was scratched in favour of the prior race to this. The Waterhouse and Bott trained Three year old gets her chance to go over for just her second career win off the back of a very meritful run at Warwick Farm this time last week where she powered into the race on the turn and headed for the win but just found one better late to end up second. Rates very well off the back of that run and should be strong late again here.

VALUE BET  - #1 - Pharoah's Reign 
Pharoah’s Reign is a Richard and Will Freedman trained runner who also looks set to go after having been kept away from the races since the beginning of April. He’s got two wins in four runs this campaign and has had some nice tick over trial work to lead him back into the return to racing. Zac Lloyd is on and will give him some much needed weight relief from the 62.5kg he was set to ride with and I think he will look the winner at least for some part of the race.

BEST BET - #11 - Welcome Gypsy
Struggling to see why Welcome Gypsy can’t win again after winning twice before just missing to come second in a big field at Kembla where she was held up on the turn and came on strongly but just couldn’t get it done behind a smart winner. Her times read very well for this as well as mapping to get a soft run onto the speed and still having a kick for them late. Latham has been with her all prep and retains the ride, i think the stable has a promising horse with Welcome Gypsy.

THE DANGER - #1 - Turning 
Turning is a deserving favourite for Kim Waugh. The four year old had an exceptional prep last time in before taking the Summer/Spring off and returning two back at Kensington when far from disgraced, having traffic issues all throughout the run and being wide but when he finally got clear air it was a bit late and gee did he power home, should have made things very interesting there with luck in running. The writing was on the wall as he scored two weeks back in fine fashion where, despite overracing in the early stages, he still had plenty to give at the end and kept them at bay for a smart win. More depth here but he’s handled stronger than this before and should be getting pretty fit now. Hard to beat.

VALUE BET - #4 - Ready To Humble (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
I think come race day I will have to have something on Ready To Humble who has just been trialling too well to ignore for Nick Olive after being sent back to the paddock late November last year, having not had an overly successful campaign then. Well, she’s had two recent trials, one at the end of last month and then at the beginning of this, that she absolutely trucked along in, winning easily and looking like a different beast now. Both of those trials have had 2 winners emerge from them and I think she will look a lot better a chance than $17.00.

I think that we have to tread lightly with a multi on such a competitive day of racing with so many of these horses having been geared for the races on this card. As such, I have given favour to those horses who have drawn good gates, are well weighted and who have top jockeys on as these factors can be all the advantage you need for a win in the circumstances.
