Wednesday Racing Tips - Caulfield Racecourse 18/10/23

Racing comes back to Caulfield after an awesome Caulfield Guineas Day on Saturday and we are back with listed racing for Coongy Cup day! It is going to be an exciting eight race card with $1.2 million prize money on offer and I am keen to get stuck into things so follow me below as I outline my best betting spots of the card!

BEST BET - #12 - Gregolimo
Gregolimo is Mick Moroney’s latest import who was brought over from France and has had just the one Australian start but given he was first up in basically a year I think that it was very impressive. He made his Aus debut in a BM78 at Flemington a few weeks back where he powered home strongly over the mile in what was overall a great debut to place second. I imagine there will be sharp improvement off the back of that and with Kah on he should be tough to beat here.

THE DANGER - #4 - Steinem (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
A smart horse for Maher and Eustace in Steinem makes his way to this race and the form lines around her read very well. She resumed at The Valley in The Stocks where she was never a threat behind Amelia’s Jewel as she just did too much early work but she did find some more late when being quite strong through the line. She gets out to a more favourable distance now, is a second up winner and has been set up with intent here.

VALUE BET  - #3 - Ho Ho Khan
Ho Ho Khan comes into this race well over the odds for Mitch Freedman and I think he is a genuine winning chance at huge odds. He last ran in The Metropolitan where he came from near last to be strong through the line behind Just Fine in an effort that reads much better than it looks on paper. He’s hard fit now, with a bunch of runs under his belt and should be rearing to go here.

BEST BET - #4 - Coleman (BEST BET) 
Matt Laurie’s debutant Coleman has produced arguably the best pre-race work out of any of the 2YO’s this season and I am very keen to see how he goes here on debut. He’s a $550,000 yearling who has produced some spectacular jumpouts, none better than the one the other week at Sandown and I am happy to make him my best bet of the day here. 

THE DANGER - #1 - Aardvark
Aardvark looks like a sharp horse for the Corstens camp and also comes into this off the back of some of the sharper Jumpouts I have seen from the 2YO’s this season. He’s been putting in some very good work, especially lately as he has been lead into start one. I think based on the way the stable has been going with their juveniles it is safe to say he runs well here and the market is already giving him respect. Go close.

VALUE BET  - #8 - Arabian Summer
Arabian Summer is a well bred filly for the McEvoy camp who is a daughter of Too Darn Hot. Amongst her jumpout work the most recent jumpout down the Flemington straight was eye catching to say the least. She will likely improve with racing but the natural talent is definitely there and I expect her to be in the finish.

BEST BET - #7 - Shock ‘Em Ova (NEXT BEST)
Shock ‘Em Ova should have these covered. The Alex Rae trained Gelding comes into this from a run over the 1600m at this track about three weeks ago where he did a bit wrong during the run and I personally thought he was gone before he knuckled down hard late to win very impressively. He now should be at around his peak fitness and out to 2000m is positive. I don’t see him losing this.

THE DANGER - #4 - Hennessy Lad
A horse I always have time for if you have been following these tips for some time is Hennessy Lad who should appreciate getting out to the 2000m here and comes through the best form lines in this race. He has been working towards fitness for an assignment like this and if you watch how he moved throughout the majority of the run last time out at Sandown over the 1800m, bar the finish of the race, he looked very sharp. He will need to be ridden a bit quieter now but should be prominent from wherever he lands in the run.

VALUE BET - #5 - Regal Azmon 
Regal Azmon has been working towards another win for Phillip Stokes and has enjoyed quite a long but successful campaign thus far and I don’t think he’s done just yet. He’s already picked up four wins from 10 runs this time in and looks to really get going now again coming off the back of a super close third placing under a stack of weight last time out over the 1800m at Sandown. I think he looks well placed out to this trip now from there and will be prominent here.

Avdulla has found great form this year with a near 50% place rate and near 20% strike rate. He has been super consistent in NSW and that has been recognised to a large extent by the bookings that he has been getting. He gets a top selection of rides for some prominent stables such as James Cummings and Chris Waller and I think he is a top shot to pick up at least one win on Wednesday at Caulfield.

Whilst it is scary to tip in some of the bigger field races I think that with it being early in the season and a lot of runners being on resumption that there are some clear top picks in each field and as such I have combined my best runners of the day into a place multi. Whilst it might not be the same level of value we generally get I think that it is a worthwhile bet and has a good chance of coming in.
