Wednesday Racing Tips - Mornington Racecourse 31/05/23

Racing at Mornington continues for another exciting midweek meeting and there are eight races on the card, each for an equal share of $55k prize money. There are some exciting types on debut in the early races and some progressive looking horses contesting the Benchmark grade races. Most races are contested in BM70 or higher grade and I think it should make for a competitive race day. Follow me below as I outline my best bets on the card.

Mornington R2 - Highview Speedboat Bill (Bm70) (2000m)

Selections:
#2 - Lady Court (BEST BET)  - $2.80
#4 - Hollywood Siren  - $4.20
#6 - Red Columbine - $7.50
#3 - Mystery Moment - $4.80

BEST BET - #2 - Lady Court (BEST BET)
I am very keen on this early spot on Lady Court. The Moody trained runner has looked very progressive in her few starts at the races and has been racing very well in just her second campaign this time in with a handful of close placings before going out the 1800m on a bog track at Sandown last time out and relished getting out in distance and onto wetter tracks, kicking away at the 400m and never being in danger. Looks good now going out to the 2000m and looks ready for it.

THE DANGER - #4 - Hollywood Siren
The Maher and Eustace trained Hollywood Siren has done little wrong in three starts this campaign and looks like a truly bred stayer. He was three weeks between runs when coming from a smart placing at Geelong to Stawell last time out when he finally went out to the 1800m where he sat back and wide, taking his time to work into the run, but wow when he did nothing was beating him there. He still looks to have a bit of upside and out to 2000m suggests he has more to offer.

VALUE BET  - #6 - Red Columbine
Red Columbine is resuming here off a six week let up for the flying Griffiths/Kock stable and he has been running very well recently with a win and a super close second placing in his last three runs. They’ve sent him for some trial work to ready him for the return and the most recent trial at Werribee looked very good, where he won seemingly just moving along. I think the stable will have him ready for this off the freshen, sure to run well.

Mornington R3 - Neds Two Sugars (Bm78) (1200m)

Selections:
#1 - Rainbiel (NEXT BEST) - $4.80
#5 - Le Derriere - $5.00
#3 - Seonee - $5.00
#4 - Asymmetrical - $7.50

BEST BET - #1 - Rainbiel (NEXT BEST)
Very interesting race here with a few of the top picks being ultra competitive and we should have a fine race on our hands. I have landed with Rainbiel on top though who rates very well against these and subsequently takes on a lot of weight, however, after the claim from Lloyd he comes into this pretty well weighted. Has won  two from six first up and placed closely in another two of those so fresh legs are no issue and I think he will give a big sight on resumption here.

THE DANGER - #5 - Le Derriere
Le Derriere has done very little wrong in four runs back from a spell and looks to have made very sharp improvements last time out at Sale over the 1200m. He bounced very well there and set second in the run when he looked to really relish the step up in trip as others set home for their final sprints he was still winding up and then powered away to finish best inside the last 50m. He looks very good for this off the back of that win and still has some upside.

VALUE BET  - #3 - Seonee
The Pat Payne trained Seonee was once a very prospective horse and we know he is honest I just don’t think he’s up to the grade he was once racing in. Regardless, this is soft competition for him and whilst he has been up for awhile it feels like, he has recorded four wins from twelve runs this campaign, is hard fit, has been given time between runs and should look very strong coming back to a shorter trip and back from racing in town. Don’t discount.

Mornington R4 - DEANE LESTER GOFUNDME (BM64) (1100m)

Selections:
#1 - Tropicconi - $4.40
#6 - Regal Vow - $4.80
#9 - Amani (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY) - $7.00
#3 - Ferlazzo - $4.00

BEST BET - #1 - Tropicconi
I do think that this is a considered move for Matt Laurie to bring Tropicconi back sharply in grade while he is hard fit into a race like this to pick up a win, boost his confidence and ratings and then progress him slowly back towards where he was. He is coming off the back of a run in a BM78 at Flemington where he was far better than it reads on paper, jumping well, sitting on the speed and just meeting a few fitter / classier horses inside the last 200m

THE DANGER - #6 - Regal Vow
Very interested and keen to see how the flying Regal Vow goes in this, as if he scores nicely here I think he will move into town for his next run. He’s come off a half year spell when resuming two back at Echuca where he was as honest as ever, shifting out and starting his run at the 150 and coming very close into second. He then went out to the 1350m at Geelong where the writing was on the wall and he duly saluted, drawing clear of them inside the last 75m and never being in danger. Still has a fair bit of upside third up and he should make this an interesting race.

VALUE BET - #9 - Amani (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Amani is Pat Carey trained three-year-old who has been progressing very nicely in his lone two starts at the races. Both the runs have come at Pakenham and both have provided themselves as strong form references with four winners emerging from the race he debuted in and another subsequent winner from the race he was last in. When he was second up here he set five deep and wide before staying out there and starting his run on the turn where he looked like he needed just an extra 50m to win but landed up second there. Should be at about peak third up now and looks very good for this.

Jockey Of The Day – Ben Melham

Ben Melham has been riding extremely well these past few months and continues to get booked on the top stables top rides each week. He gets a short booking of rides this week at Mornington but is always around the mark and two of his rides are favourite/second favourites in their respective fields, with the other being a very solid trifecta spot. I am keen to see if he can pick up one or more wins on race day tomorrow at Mornington.

Best Promotions for Mornington Racecourse

Promotions are traditionally the primary way for punters to create an edge over the bookies, as they can save your cash when your runner fails to win, in the instance of Unibet they often offer 2nd and 3rd money back in bonus bets for a selection of races on the midweek and Provincial racing days. Coupled with their generous odds I have to put them as the top bookie promotion wise at the moment for Australian racing.

If you are looking for the best promotions this week for Wednesday's racing I wouldn’t look past Unibet, often they offer odds boosts in addition to the money back promotions. Don’t forget to check your account as well for personal offers.
