Wednesday Racing Tips - Sandown Hillside 18/01/23

Racing at Sandown Hillside in the midweeks continues through January, with a solid 9 race meeting and almost $500,000 worth of prize on offer. Race distances range from the mid distance 1300m to a few staying races up to 2400m. The track is rated a good 4 and I expect it to stay within this range as Melbourne continues to have dry weather..

BEST BET - #3 - Donatrice 
Donatrice didn’t offer too much when resuming over this track and distance in a small field of five, finishing third there. However, he may have just needed the run and doesn’t like it soft, both wins have come in the dry and I think he can take this out with Childs hopping aboard

THE DANGER - #2 - Manco Man 
Manco man is the danger in this race, he was 2 wide all run last time out at Mornington and still reeled them in easily for a strong win over the 2000m. He relished the lack of speed there and looks to be fit, I think he is up to this. Natural improvement and race style suggest 2400m is a bonus as well.

VALUE BET  - #6 - Vadaboy

Vadaboy comes into this with back to back placings when running well two back at Kyneton over the 1850m on the soft going and then went to geelong and stepped up to the 2200m on the good going and ran well, looked suited up in distance and only went down in the last 50m. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the finish at odds

BEST BET - #10 - Shanghai Venture - (NEXT BEST)
Looking for others in a race where I don’t like the favourite and I think Blake Shinn on Shanghai Venture is the best shot at that. He looks to be a talented horse who looks to have found form with back to back 2nd placings at this track over the 12 and 1300m distances before leading all the way for a dominant win last time out here. I think he can go on with it now and Shinn sticking is a bonus.

THE DANGER - #6 - Toogoodfortoorak

Toogoodfortoorak has to be forgiven for last run at the Valley when pulling up lame and never having a chance, sitting deep as well is a major disadvantage on a tricky track. Before then he belted them first up from a long spell at Cranbourne as a $4.00 favourite but really seems to be a good type and natural improvement suggests he will be in this for the long way

VALUE BET  - #1 - Duke Of Hastings 
Duke of Hastings resumes from a long spell but has been racing and winning in better company than this before and rates a bit on top of the majority of this field. He maps to have plenty of cover and wind home late. Lafferty is a bonus and I am interested to see what Simon Zahra has done for him first up.

BEST BET - #4 - Calico Jack
This is another race I am failing to see why the opening odds are as they are. I think that Calico Jack is set up perfectly here to notch back to back wins. He maps well, the insanely in  form Ethan Brown sticks and natural improvement and fitness third up suggest he can take this out.

THE DANGER - #7 - Pacific Ruby
The stablemate of Calico Jack and favourite in the race presents as the danger here, he resumes from a near six month spell after picking up back to back wins on the heavy going at Moe and Sandown Hillside over similar distances to this. The good going is the query and I will take him on here as there are some good shots around him.

VALUE BET - #6 - Mt Niseko
Mt Niseko is another interesting one who looks talented, he was spelled after picking up a win at Geelong for nearly a year and then resumed two weeks back at Geelong over the 1200m where he won smartly after being trapped and weaving a path to draw clear last 100m, he can easily go on with it now and Dee sticks on board.
