Wednesday Racing Tips - Sandown Hillside Racecourse 09/08/23

Big midweek racing comes to Sandown Hillside this Wednesday as the Group 1 racing season is around the corner for us and I am keen on a bunch of these competitive races but also think that the top Victorian stables have some astutely placed runners who look standout bets in these fields as horses gear up for big Spring’s and I think we shouldn’t delay getting stuck into this half a million dollar Metro midweek meeting so follow me below as I outline my best betting spots of the day!

#1 - Clock Strikes (NEXT BEST) - $4.50

BEST BET - #1 - Clock Strikes (NEXT BEST) 
I am a big fan of the Griffiths and De Kock trained Clock Strikes who strikes his easiest contest in some time here and looks well placed to go over for the stable. He raced off of a three week break at this track and trip last time out where he recovered from a bad jump and improved throughout the run to find the front and never stopped chasing hard when only finding one better in a horse who had the gun run. He clocked some very nice splits then and Logan Mcneil retains the ride and gives the horse a key claim to offset top weight. Only runs well IMO.

THE DANGER - #6 - Veloce Carro 
Veloce Carro is taking a big step down in competition resuming here off of a long half year spell for Maher and Eustace and doesn’t take much to get going so I think in this field he is one of the leading contenders. He went away for a spell off the back of a nicely run fourth placing at Flemington in Saturday company where he overcame a wide run to finish just outside of the placegetters. He’s got a close second placing in two first up runs, times read well, not much more to it.

VALUE BET  - #11 - Prancing Queen 
Prancing Queen might want the sting out of the ground a bit more than this but I think the way she is going and the price she is at, it would be silly to not have something on, even if it’s a throw at the dartboard. She ran last time out in Saturday company at Caulfield where she had no luck at all, forced to do things tough out wide behind Cute As who is a smart and progressive horse. She will be fitter for that tough run and finds a beatable field now.

BEST BET - #2 - Zaynudin 
Zaynudin looks like a good thing going for the Dabernig stable and has only had the three starts in Australia but looks astutely placed here to pick up his first local win. Last time out he stepped out to this track and trip off the back of a nice third placing over the 2000m at Warracknabeal and trucked along nicely on the speed but was one paced when asked for the effort and held third. He will be ready to peak now staying at this trip fourth up and will be tough to beat here in a similar assignment.

THE DANGER - #8 - Live By The Sword
Live By The Sword stepped out from a massive 64 week break from racing two starts ago where he needed the run over the 1700m at Warracknabeal before racing last time out over the 2210m at Donald where he made massive improvements between runs to present at the right time and get past all but the all the way winner who had the run and control of the race. He’s third up now, with plenty more to offer, ready to peak and looks to have a bit of class about him.

VALUE BET  - #7 - Castel Trosino (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
I have Castel Trosino as my roughie of the day in my best bets tips and you can see a full write up of why in that article but with the big head winds we look set to face at Sandown tomorrow I think that he maps to get the right sort of run for this race with plenty of cover and his recent efforts are more than up to this. He’s taking a big step up in trip which is the query and why we see the price but with Mertens on he should be afforded every chance.

BEST BET - #3 - Frigid (BEST BET)
I do imagine it will be quite tough to beat the progressive mare in Frigid who has been in form and looks to go on with it now under leading apprentice Pinn who gives her a key claim for this to offset top weight. She was a few weeks between runs when stepping out over the 1800m here last time, which is a tricky distance, but her class came to show when she took over from off the fence and powered away in the last 400m for a strong win. Doesn’t have to find much on that effort to win this.

THE DANGER - #4 - Jabbawockeez 
Jabbawockeez looks well placed here for the Hayes camp and I think is the main danger in this field. He has already picked up two wins in four runs this campaign with one of those coming here two back over the mile in a very impressive fashion. His last start effort can be forgiven with a tough run there and can be taken as a fitness benefit and 1800m looks within his firing range. Top chance.

VALUE BET - #2 - Sir Rockford
Sir Rockford has only had the thirteen career starts but has only been unplaced in five of them and takes a solid step down in competition for this as well as a step down in distance after not totally handling his last run out over the 2100m. He beat off the likes of Thorin and Mayfair Spirit over this track and trip three back which reads very well for this assignment and he should still have petrol in the tank after being afforded nice breaks between runs as well as coming back to the trip he runs best at and this isn’t an overly strong race.

One of the most significant considerations in picking up multiple winners is the track bias, which favors horses that don’t get too far back in the run at Flemington Racecourse.
