Wednesday Racing Tips - Sandown Hillside Racecourse 13/09/23

Big Midweek card down in Victoria this Wednesday at Sandown Hillside with a bunch of high level racing on the program as we are well underway into the Group 1 races season and Spring racing. Plenty of runners are those who look to be progressing towards high level Saturday grade racing and some who are coming back to this midweek metro level. Either way, it’s going to prove to be a super competitive card and I am keen to get stuck into things so follow me below as I outline my best betting spots.

BEST BET - #6 - Aperitivo  
Apertivo is a very smart horse for the Hayes boys who has been flying since resuming from a spell. He’s had two runs since he came off a nineteen week spell when first running at Sale over the 1400m where he put the writing on the wall with a close second placing before stepping out at Cranbourne over the same distance two weeks ago where he jumped a long priced favourite and motored up to win in the final strides in an impressive go. More to offer third up and think he likely takes this out.

THE DANGER - #3 - Moya Lass
Moya Lass is a very good horse for the Sandhu stable who finds a very winnable contest first up even if it might not be the stable’s intention. He’s coming off of a 16 week spell after being sent back to the paddock after a luckless last prep where he recorded a bunch of close runner up placings. He’s had a sharp Cranbourne trial recently so I feel as though there is some level of intent from the stable and he doesn’t generally take many to get going.

VALUE BET  - #1 - Starspangled Baby (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Starspangled Baby put in a very good effort first up and looks well placed to go one better second up now for the Perdon stable. He resumed off of a 14 week spell at this track where he sat on the leaders back and ran well for the first ¾ of the race before being eased out of it late. He’s a star at his best, has won second up before and I have a lot of love for the horse.

BEST BET - #7 - Von Hauke (BEST BET) 
Von Hauke looks like he is shaping up to be a very good horse for the Brown stable and resumes here off of a short eleven week break and often goes very well fresh. His last prep saw him win smartly first up before a close second placing in the mud at this course on the Lakeside and now comes off the back of a sharp trial win at Cranbourne as he looks to return in a strong way. He gets the booking of Kah so fair bit of intent and from the good draw she should give him every chance.

THE DANGER - #5 - Extratwo
Extratwo I am not yet fully convinced is the horse he is being made out to be for the Maher and Eustace stable but at the same time I do think he is going well enough to prove me wrong. He’s had four runs this time in since coming to the stable and after a first up win has been given a few weeks between runs before stepping out last time off a six week break where he got the gun run at this course and dominated them from on the pace. He looks well placed to win again here but likely is approaching the end of prep.

VALUE BET  - #1 - Awapuni Princess
Awapuni Princess comes into this at huge odds and whilst I am not sure she wins this I think he is definitely in with a shot. He’s had four runs since coming to the Bedggood stable where she recorded two close placings before a smart win at Bendigo over this distance and then stepped out here over the 1400m where she ran to her best as a long favourite and chased hard between runners in not the most economical of runs to place third. I think she is way over the odds here.

BEST BET - #5 - Secaution (NEXT BEST)  
Secaution looks well placed to win again here third up for Annabel Neasham and I think he likely takes this out. He’s had two runs back from a spell and both have been impressive, the first of which he stepped out at Warwick Farm as a $3.50 favourite where he was held up at a crucial stage but his class saw him power away with clear air for a smart win. He then stepped out last time at Kensington where he was forced to do things tough four wide all run and was never a winning chance but would have retained a big fitness benefit off of that. He now comes into this third up and set to peak, keen.

THE DANGER - #14 - Ana Jaahza 
Ana Jaahza looks like a super progressive horse for the Hayes boys and has only had two career starts but has been powerfully running in both and now comes off a long spell with no public trials but the booking of Dee signals a fair level of intent. His debut win at Ballarat over the 1000m was done in good time before running a close second when overcoming the track bias at The Valley only in his second career start. I think he has a fair bit of talent about him and am keen to see what he can produce here.

VALUE BET - #4 - Prancing Queen 
Prancing Queen looks well placed here to record another win for Mick Ellerton. He’s had two wins already this campaign in five runs and has been considerably afforded breaks between runs to keep his edge. He gets in super light for this with the claim from Bull, meets a beatable field and at his best, his splits rate him a fair way in front of this field. Just not sure how much petrol is left in the tank.

One of the most significant considerations in picking up multiple winners is the track bias, which favors horses that don’t get too far back in the run at Flemington Racecourse.
