Wednesday Racing Tips - Sandown Hillside Racecourse 22/03/23

The second midweek meet of March brings us back to Sandown for another round of metro grade racing. The Victorian stables have some impressive contenders preparing for what promises to be a huge Autumn season, and we're in for a treat with eight races on the card offering a total prize pool of $440k. The featured race of the day is the BM78 LOCKETTLED.AU, a highly anticipated event that's sure to deliver excitement to all who attend. With the rail out +3m and the track expected to be a good 4, we're in for a fantastic day of racing. So join me below for all the action!

BEST BET - #4 - Stern Idol (BEST BET)
Stern Idol is beautifully placed to go over here first up from a break for the Maher and Eustace camp after having quite a successful first prep at the races, picking up a win and a close second placing. She’s had two trials to lead her back into this and Maher and Eustace rarely place their runners without consideration. Top chance to go over this time.

THE DANGER - #1 - Prince Ziggy 

Prince Ziggy returned to the races after a short let up last time out at this track and trip and he took that race out after racing at his own pace wide all run and then shifted in at the 400m and ran away with it. That race wasn’t as strong as this but he did relish getting out to the longer trip and I think where there’s smoke there’s fire and that he can make it 2 from 2 at this track/trip.

VALUE BET  - #3 - Traduce
Traduce will be amongst the fittest of the runners here who has had his last two runs at this distance at the valley and looks to be steadily improving off the back of each. His last run he was far from disgraced when third to rebel racer and he did stay there, still having a decent kick to finish off. I think he has a bit of class about him and his third run at this distance, at an easier track to navigate, should see him finish very close.

BEST BET - #7 - Circle Of Magic (NEXT BEST)
Circle of Magic is a Kavanagh trained Mare that is bursting to break through and gets another top chance in this field. His laast two runs have been full of merit, placing in both of them. Her most recent run was at this track over the 1200m where chased hard into the straight after a reasonably tough run and only just missed late to end up second. Quick turn around, he’ll be better for that last run and Shinn’s aboard. I think he is very well placed to take this out.

THE DANGER - #4 - Luna Cat
Luna Cat has been having a successful campaign thus far with two placings in three runs in stronger company than this. One of those placings was at this track, when first up and she looked to move really nicely in a bold effort and fast time. She seems to have a liking for running here, will be hard fit fourth up and gets Michael Dee aboard, they map well and I think the favourite quote is justified.

VALUE BET  - #2 - Orange Ears
Orange Ears is having his first run in the city after an extremely successful campaign thus far. All you can do is win and he has done so with three wins in three runs this campaign. The first of which was at his home track at Benalla and the next two have been on the trot. The times have been pretty good and he comes into this with the best rating in the field. I think he has a top chance to go over and make it four in a row.

BEST BET - #11 - Eye Of The Eagle
Eye of the Eagle looks to be a talented prospect for John McArdle who scored in fine fashion last time out at Pakenham to break maiden over the 1200m. That was first up after a long break in not the easiest race and she was very smart in scoring there, shifting back towards the rails in the last 200m and taking over. She maps to get a reasonably soft run and Mott retains the ride, he’s been firing of late and I back them to be in the finish.

THE DANGER - #2 - Smashing Eagle 
Smashing Eagle is a Hawkes product racing under Jye McNeil third up today and he had a flying start to this campaign, winning smartly at Bendigo first up in a super impressive effort before racing in a BM70 at The Valley and that needs to be forgiven as he pulled up with pretty bad respiratory issues which cost him there. He’s had recovery time and should be holding form with just under a month break from the races. If he comes into this in good order, his class should carry him over the top of this lot.

VALUE BET - #4 - Stretto (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Stretto looks a very good prospect for the Morrish camp who gets Damien Oliver booked for his second up ride. He resumed at the Valley when not totally disgraced at all after racing tough out wide all run he dropped back in the field a bit but looked to need that run for the fitness benefit and generally is very good second up. I think the quick turn around signals intent and he’s shown plenty of talent in his prior preps under the Maher and Eustace stable. Wouldn’t be surprised at all if he took this out.
