Wednesday Racing Tips - Sandown Hillside Racecourse 24/01/24

Racing returns to our usual midweek suspects with an elite midweek card set for Sandown Hillside and I am keen to get into the thick of things and have run through the card and picked out my best betting spots. I think there are some very solid horses stepping out in this Victorian card so with that said let’s get right into it. Follow me below for my best betting spots!

BEST BET - #9 - Time To Chat (BEST BET)
I think that Time To Chat can hit back hard here for Maher and Eustace and check off the maiden win at start number four. He looked very sharp when placing runner up at Seymour two back before taking too long to get into his stride last time out at this course but he was very strong through the line. I think the blinkers going on now in combination with Shinn taking the ride will see him go over here.

THE DANGER - #4 - Dragoon
Dragoon rates highly here for the Eurell camp and I think after the way he stepped out at Cranbourne last time out he has to be respected here. He ran over the 1500m at that course a couple weeks ago where he set third on the rails and loomed to claim the race at the top of the straight but after hitting the lead at the 100m and looking the winner he was just found late. I think fitter here, he’s ready to go over. 

VALUE BET  - #8 - Thoughtful Woman
Thoughtful Woman is approaching a win and gets as honest a set up as any for this assignment. He has had two runs since coming off of a 21 week spell and making his debut for the Laing camp and I think he has been working well towards a win. His last run saw him improve sharply between runs when stepping out here over the 1500m and powering home between runners to place runner up. He looks good for longer which he gets here off that effort and will be strong here.

BEST BET - #3 - Kaido (NEXT BEST)
There are a couple prospects in this race that look solid but I think none better than Kaido after the way he notched his second career win last time out. He was a couple weeks between runs when stepping out at Cranbourne over this trip and overcoming a tough wide run to work home well and keep going when drawing clear in the last 100m. Should get an easier run here and I think he handles it well. 

THE DANGER - #6 - Este Dia
Este Dia has to rate as a key danger here for the Griffiths and De Kock camp and comes into this after showing massive improvements second up when at Cranbourne a few weeks back and winning very well over the 1000m to overcome pressure at the top of the straight and kick away from them there. That was only second up so you’d think there will still be more improvement to come. Go well here.

VALUE BET  - #1 - Starz Barwon
Star Barwon hasn’t won for a long time but this is a huge step back in competition relative to what he is used to contending and I think with the right set up and run he can be competitive here. He ran on very well behind a smart one in Luna Cat two back before coming back to racing three weeks between runs and setting third in the run at this track last time out before just fading late. I think he will be much better with a few out in front of him and can hit back here.

BEST BET - #10 - Exceed The Dream 
Exceed The Dream has been flying since coming over to Maher and Eustace with a win and two close placings in his three outings for the new stable and given he still has steam in the tank he should be running well here again. He gets in super light here and with a good draw and Craig Will booked he has to be respected.

THE DANGER - #1 - Intrepid Eagle
Intrepid Eagle has to rate quite highly here for the McEvoy’s coming off of a sharp win and into this with hard fitness. He was second up, three weeks between runs, when stepping out at The Valley a few weeks back and despite facing being held up through the run it simply wasn’t enough to stop him when he just kept coming to win well there. Rates highly here.

VALUE BET - #8 - Daily Bugle (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Daily Bugle seems to have been set up very well for the win now. I am keen to see how she looks in the yard but all things being equal she is as good a shot as any in this field. She comes out of a 1100m race in Saturday company at Flemington where she really got going late to come from the back of the pack and power home to finish just outside the placings. I think that with Shinn aboard and the extra 200m she can run a belter race here.
