Wednesday Racing Tips - Sandown Lakeside Racecourse 31/01/24

We have a bumper eight race card set for Sandown Lakeside tomorrow and we should see some very nice types from the top Victorian and out of state stables either making their debuts or early into their preps who look towards the huge Spring racing season that kicks off this week! The majority of the races are in mid distance ranges which is always exciting, most of these races will be contested in BM70 / BM64 grade. I have outlined my best betting spots on the card so follow me below!

BEST BET - #2 - Immortality (NEXT BEST)
Immortality has to rate highly here after the way he returned to racing for the Price and Kent stable. He came back off of a twenty two week spell at Pakenham over the 1200m where he set sixth and two wide in the run before swinging wider on the turn and jetting home in a flash effort to only find one better in the straight. He has plenty of upside off the back of that and will be strong for this assignment.

THE DANGER - #5 - Hey Fat Cat
It was an impressive return to racing for Hey Fat Cat for the Laing stable when breaking maiden last start and he can go on with it here. He came off of a 20 week break for his fifth career start at Sale where he took over the race at the 300m and was never in doubt from there, powering away to win very well. I think the blinkers and drop in grade were the key to him and they stay on for this so watch closely.

VALUE BET  - #3 - The Open
The Open has had the one career start for Patrick Payne but it’s hard to knock him off the way he debuted to the races. He stepped out at Wangaratta off the back of a bunch of sharp trials at the beginning of the year where he hit the lead at the 150m after chasing hard all run and was dominant to the line, winning well on debut. You would think there’s plenty more to come off of that effort.

BEST BET - #3 - Tycoon Bec (BEST BET)
You would think that Tycoon Bec just wins this after the way she has been running in higher grade than this. She stepped out in BM84 grade two runs back at Ballarat when running home very strongly to place second and then came back to racing off of a short three week break at Pakenham last start where she couldn’t get properly into the race from out back but still worked home well. She meets a softer field here, hard fit and ready to go over for her seventh win.

THE DANGER - #1 - Commander Harry
Nice to see Commander Harry come over to Ciaron Maher now and I think the way that the stable goes with their stayers this guy can make an impression at his first start for the new camp. He won very well two runs back at Caulfield over the 2000m before not handling the trip at Geelong last time out over the 2400m. He will be plenty fit however and the stable will be sure to have him tuned up for this.

VALUE BET  - #4 - Pearl Rain
Pearl Rain is one I am happy to entertain at longer odds for Patrick Payne. She’s a lightly raced horse who resumed with a bang at the end of last year at Nhill over the 1650m in BM84 grade when winning in fine fashion before last racing at this course when just needing the run as a bridge up to the distance range we see tomorrow. I think third up, ready for the trip and evidently with talent she can run a great race here.

BEST BET - #2 - Fine Rebel 
A bunch of sharp stables seem to be making use of Tatum Bull’s big claim tomorrow and the Moloney stable combines with her on Fine Rebel who looks one of the sharper favourites of the day tomorrow. He took a couple runs to get going but has been flying of late and last stepped out over this trip at Pakenham where he beat some nice horses when winning very well. Hard fit, in form and gets in light after the claim, hard to beat.

THE DANGER - #3 - Unthinkable
Obvious danger in Unthinkable for Mick Freedman who has a tonne of upside coming into this and seems to have returned to racing very well after coming off of a 27 week break at Hamilton over the 1400m and chasing hard all through the straight to only find one better. That was an impressive return to racing considering he was untrialled and now should be ready for this trip and is a definite winning chance.

VALUE BET - #6 - Eloped (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Eloped has been working towards a wing quite nicely for the Laing camp and given how much intent the stable has sent forth their runners tomorrow I think he has to be respected here. He last stepped out over this trip at Pakenham a couple weeks ago when finding a path in the straight and powering home when just not able to go on with the winner, placing second there. That was a sharp effort and at the big price I think he is a nice value spot.
