Wednesday Racing Tips - Sportsbet-Ballarat Racecourse 05/04/23

Racing returns to Sportsbet-Ballarat for a fine midweek meeting with eight races on the card, a bunch of them being sprints and I think that we will have a very exciting card ahead of us. There’s a total of $300,000 prize money available on the card and the track is rated to be a soft 5, the rail is in true position. Follow me below as I outline my best bets on the race card!

BEST BET - #9 - Subliminal 
A little bit of ambiguity here with a lot on resumption and one or two who are having their first start at the races. However, I am keen to have something on the L & T Corstens trained Subliminal who resumed at the races two and a half weeks ago at this track and was mighty impressive behind a super progressive horse when second in the field with a huge gap to third. 

THE DANGER - #8 - Ferlazzo
Ferlazzo is a serious prospect for Mick Price and Mick Kent Jnr who has only had the two showings at the races but her last was back in September of last year on a Heavy Track at Bendigo in a very strong return to racing even though she had lots to learn when third in the field. I back that she has learnt some of those things coming from the prominent stable that she is and I expect a bold showing come race day.

VALUE BET  - #4 - Non Grata (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY) 
Non Grata is a three-year-old Gelding by Maher and Eustace and has to be respected coming from the prominent camp with John Allen aboard. He’s only seen the one start at the races so far three weeks ago at Geelong over the 1121m where raced two wide without cover before shifting out four wide on the turn and having a strong kick but not being able to overcome that tough run, fading in the last 100m. He should be all the better and fitter for that run and will settle much handier this time. Big chance.

BEST BET - #5 - Madame Du Gast - (NEXT BEST)
Madame Du Gast rates highly back to this grade from Metro racing. He resumed after a long twenty week spell at Sandown just under three weeks ago over the 1300m when far from disgraced, finishing a length and a half away from the winner to end up fourth in a small field of six. The times weren’t bad at all and you would have to assume there is quite a lot of progression to come now. I am keen to be in her corner.

THE DANGER - #6 - Gentility  
Gentility looks like she will lead these and be in it for a long way. He won at mornington on debut in a 1200m as a short favourite before going on to metro racing at both caulfield and then Sandown where he most recently ran before a spell. He ran third in that 1300m race on a bog down track and was very solid even despite not loving the heavy condition. I think from the soft draw he should take up the front running and be hard to chase down.

VALUE BET  - #1 - Blakmax
Blakmax is a genuine sit and sprint horse. If he gets to sit he will run a good race. The question is how far he gets back but hes won already this campaign and has been racing in much bigger races than this even though not performing to the highest degree at that level hes been around the mark. He’s proven on this grounding and his lone win has come at this distance. Don’t treat lightly.

BEST BET - #7 - Rylov (BEST BET)
I think this is going to be a hotly contested race between a few promising horse but I am putting Rylov on top because of the map and sectionals. Rylov placed on debut over the 1100m before going to Pakenham and scoring in his second run of his career over the same distance. A lot of the speed in this race is from barrier 6> and he draws to get into a nice spot on the speed with a bit of cover and will still have a kick for them on the way home. I quite like him to go over tomorrow.

THE DANGER - #9 - Drop The Verse 
The inform Joe Bowditch hops on Drop The Verse who is second up from a four month break and first up placed in a BM58 at Yarra Valley at just over an odds on favourite. Last time she was second up she came 2nd of 11 at Bendigo in a BM64 when missing in a bob of the heads. Interested to see what Joe opts to do from the draw but I think she can definitely win this with a half decent steer.

VALUE BET - #10 - Hydro Star
The John Mcardle trained Hydro Star resumes after a 24 week spell and whilst he can mix his form a bit, the stable has been flying this season and he last ran third when first up at Sandown in tougher competition than this. He’s a very solid horse who has mostly been running in much better grade than this, lone win was on the synthetic so slight query but I think with Mott on and the map being quite good they are in with a definite shot at a great price.
