Wednesday Racing Tips - Sportsbet-Ballarat Racecourse 26/04/23

Racing returns to Sportsbet-Ballarat for a post Anzac day midweek meeting and the card really doesn’t look too bad with three maiden races to kick off the card, followed by three BM64s and a BM70 to close out the race day. There looks to be some handy types put forward and with $265,000 prize money on the card and the track being a soft 5 it should all make for an exciting day at the races. Follow me below as I outline the card!

BEST BET - #7 - The Extreme Cat (BEST BET)
Interesting little Maiden race we have to kick off the card with just the one on debut and a few progressive looking horse but I am keen to be in the corner of the Maher and Eustace trained three year old who resumed at Kyneton off a half year spell and looked very good fresh when sitting just off the pace and having a solid kick but the fitness told late when she went down second. Will be all the better and fitter for that run and is a top chance to go one better now.

THE DANGER - #5 - Field Of Mars 
Field Of Mars is the clear danger in this race and has been going so close in her two runs back from a spell thus far, just going down second in super close finishes and should be at her peak now. She’s had the two runs at the 1200m where she has shown plenty of ability and I think dropping back 100m will suit her run style well. Clear threat. 

VALUE BET  - #2 - Prison Bars 
I think that Prison Bars can resume a lot better now off a let up than she did first up off a big year long spell when she pulled up Lame and didn’t finish the race off back at the end of February. She had plenty of excuses there and looks to be a very sharp horse on her day. The market hasn’t given her much attention but she maps well, has Jared Fry on and I think she can surprise.

BEST BET - #6 - Oenology (NEXT BEST) 
Oenology hasn’t been seen at the races for over a year but was very good in her one start return last Febraury. She looked like a Saturday class animal here at this track over the 1400m when running in a BM64 to some very good horses. She was honest as ever, sitting three deep with no cover and just kept coming to place second there. The stable is astute with placing their runners, runs well with fresh legs and I think she can make it a winning return in a race without too much depth.

THE DANGER - #3 - Serenaur
Serenaur is a big threat in this field, having placed in three runs and won one in her five run prep this time in. One of those placings and the win came at this track and she loves it here, racing in good style and scoring dominantly in the one start and running a very close second in her most recent run here. Only has to hold her form to be a threat in this field.

VALUE BET  - #1 - Amegdul 
Amegdul resumed a winner in weaker company at Wangaratta at the beginning of March before moving onto Metro racing at Sandown when she came on very strongly in a big field to end up midfield after knuckling badly at the start. Racing back from the city now and should be hard fit, far from disgraced in the tougher company last time out and should be ultra competitive in this field.

BEST BET - #10 - Mrs Chrissie
Mrs Chrissie looks like a very genuine prospect for the Maher and Eustace camp who comes into this third after resuming at the Bool where she started as a short favourite when she missed the jump and improved from three deep but just couldn’t get there behind a progressive Rich Paris. She then raced here recently but pulled up with heart issues and has to be forgiven for that. Should be ready to win now.

THE DANGER - #6 - Angelone 
Angelone has done very little wrong in his three start career for the Vella stable winning on debut at Mildura before running a close third at Horsham, then having a little break and running another close second on the Heavy at Donald. He looks like a very smart horse who handles all going but should be very strong back onto firmer ground now and I think this race isn’t overly deep and he has the upside on some of these.

VALUE BET - #12 - Venetian Lass (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Venetian Lass kicked off her campaign with a strong win here over this distance when clocking some great late splits and coming from seemingly out of the run to storm over the top of them and make a mess of the field. She then went to Sandown where she should have ran second but was held up badly at the 400-200m mark and when clear air came she powered home into third. That was a very honest effort and off the back of that she should be very competitive in a much softer field.
