Wednesday Racing Tips - Canterbury Racecourse 01/05/24

Another Wednesday night of racing under the lights at Canterbury and I am very excited for this week’s card as we see some of the premiere stables in NSW sending forward runners who look to be progressive as the Autumn Group 1 races season has ended a lot of these runners are stepping back from Provincial level racing. I have run through the card and outlined my best betting spots below so follow me!

Canterbury R1 - James Squire (Bm78) (1550m)

Selections:
#1 - Hollywood Hero  - $3.40
#9 - Stand Aside  - $4.20
#7 - Queenmaker (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY) - $10.00
#2 - Baltic Coast - $7.00

BEST BET - #1 - Hollywood Hero
Hollywood Hero really should have gone over last time out for Bjorn Baker and I think he comes here ready to go third up and notch his fourth win. He stepped out as an odds on favourite at this course a couple weeks ago when getting no luck in the run, contacting another runner and then never being able to build into the race when still so honest into fourth place. He rates highly off the back of that effort and should have these covered if he brings his best.

THE DANGER - #9 - Stand Aside
Obvious danger in Stand Aside who comes here for the Waterhouse / Bott camp second up after returning from a long 22 week spell. He resumed with a bang at Warwick Farm over the 1300m when leading along the fence and booting clear of them in the straight, seemingly with plenty more to offer. He now strips all the fitter and will be sharp here.

VALUE BET  - #7 - Queenmaker (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Queenmaker is racing quite a fair bit back in depth after bombing out in the Group three Aspiration at Randwick two back and now comes here off of a six week let up and with the benefit of a nice trial at Canterbury a couple weeks back where he looks to be moving very nicely. This will be one of the softer fields he’s contested in some time, draws well and does good work on the fresher side.

Canterbury R2 - Hyland Race Colours Mdn Plate (1100m)

Selections:
#7 - Super Zippi (BEST BET) - $3.20
#2 - Eraantyva - $2.30
#4 - Nothin' Seemstofit  - $5.00
#3 - Hot Jive - $8.50

BEST BET - #7 - Super Zippi (BEST BET)
Super Zippi comes here for her Canterbury debut in a maiden that has shaped up to be very deep but I think that with the benefit of a few good runs aboard he’s going to be tough to get past here. His past two starts have come at Wyong and the Hawkesbury when getting unlucky two back, not able to find a spot until late to get past the winner when doing all the work into second and then battling on well last time out from the worst part of the ground at the Hawkesbury into third. He maps to get a nice trail in here and should be strong from near the front.

THE DANGER - #2 - Eraantyva
The market is backing Eraantyva with a whole lot of confidence on debut for Chris Waller and I can understand why. His debutantes are rarely poorly placed and this guy comes here after being given plenty of trial and jumpout work to get ready for start one. He’s won a Rosehill trial three back in nice style and since then has backed it up with two more quiet trials, I assume to keep his legs warm. Go well here at odds.

VALUE BET  - #3 - Hot Jive
Another of the raced that I am happy to give a look here is the Croft trained Hot Jive who is a ten start maiden, which is the knock, but he’s a ten start maiden that has been in some deep races and who has run very well thus far. He was 16 weeks between runs when resuming to racing at Wellington a few weeks back and battling on well despite being posted two and three wide the run. He would have retained a big fitness benefit off the back of that and will be strong here.

Canterbury R4 - Cylinder @ Darley Mdn Hcp (1550m)

Selections:
#3 - Kotaishi (NEXT BEST) - $4.20
#1 - Kings Valley  - $3.20
#2 - Physicist - $7.00
#6 - Glebe  - $4.80

BEST BET - #3 - Kotaishi (NEXT BEST)
Feature race of the day with this $100k maiden and I have landed on Kotaishi for Ciaron Maher who comes out of this identical race two weeks ago where he was brilliant in defeat, comfortably beating the field bar the winner who looks a very progressive animal in Little Jeanie. He’ll shape up smarter for the run, hard fit and I think he takes this out.

THE DANGER - #1 - Kings Valley
Ciaron Maher’s other runner in this race and current running favourite is Kings Valley who had his first run on Aussie shores from Ireland off of a 26 week break here behind Kotaishi and Little Jeanie where he placed third, a space behind the exacta. He will be a lot more revved up for this assignment and I’d say he’s a deserving favourite, but this is another competitive race.

VALUE BET - #2 - Physicist
I think that the Widdup, Schiller combination signal a fair bit of intent here from the stable and after the way Physicist made his debut to racing for the camp at Wyong a couple weeks ago he is one I am happy to entertain at longer odds. He was awkwardly placed across heels at the 150m before finding a space when too late to win but he found the line very well in defeat behind some good ones and a win looks close off the back of that effort.

Best Promotions for Canterbury Racecourse

Promotions are traditionally the primary way for punters to create an edge over the bookies, as they can save your cash when your runner fails to win, in the instance of Unibet they often offer 2nd and 3rd money back in bonus bets for a selection of races on the midweek and Provincial racing days. Coupled with their generous odds I have to put them as the top bookie promotion wise at the moment for Australian racing.

If you are looking for the best promotions this week for Wednesday's racing I wouldn’t look past Unibet, often they offer odds boosts in addition to the money back promotions. Don’t forget to check your account as well for personal offers.

Promotions often change so make sure you sign up at unibet.com.au to see what promotions are applicable to you and you may even be surprised to find some promotions that weren’t mentioned here!
