Saturday Racing Tips - Moonee Valley Racecourse 23/03/24

Racing comes back to Moonee Valley this Saturday for William Reid Stakes day and in addition to the Group 1 races feature of the day, the William Reid Stakes, a $1 million race over the 1200m there are a bunch of other listed races at the course tomorrow. I have picked out my best betting spots and outlined them below so follow me as I run through them.

Selections:
#1 - Marquess - $2.80
#5 - Aristonous - $4.20
#4 - Magnaspin - $3.60
#3 - Up And Under (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY) - $8.50

BEST BET - #1 - Marquess
I would obviously like to focus on the listed racing of the day at the course but I do think that Marquess is a very good betting spot and it would be a nice bet to land early in the day and build a bit of a bank roll. He comes into this a few weeks between runs since being posted wide without cover at this course and just fading late behind Welwal but I think that third up here, hard fit, he will be very tough to beat based off how well he’s run in the past third up.

THE DANGER - #5 - Aristonous
Aristonous will be dangerous getting out to this trip for Annabel NEasham. He ran three weeks back at Flemington where he just found another future star in Another Wil a bit sharp where he still ran well in defeat. It was also his first run for a few weeks and I think turned around quicker now, with more intent, he will be strong here.

VALUE BET  - #3 - Up And Under (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Up And Under continues to improve with each run for Chris Waller and I don’t think can be fully discounted in this field. He couldn’t make up ground from the rear at Flemington a few weeks back on a day where it was pretty much impossible to make up ground from the rear of the field. He’s talented though and with the right kind of run, settling closer, he can take this out at a nice price.

BEST BET - #9 - Roll On High (NEXT BEST) 
There’s a Walker / Bosson horse in this race and I think the market is giving plenty of respect to him based on how Imperatriz has been since hitting Aussie shores but I think that is somewhat steering the market away from just how good Roll On High looks for the Moody / Coleman camp. she resumed in the Surround at Randwick where she finished the race off powerfully behind Tropical Squall in a very good first up effort and I think now she will have a stack of improvement and be even tougher to beat. Should be the favourite here IMO.

THE DANGER - #2 - Wishlor Lass 
I hadn’t seen Wishlor Lass for a little bit but I must have missed the resuming run at Flemington a few weeks back in a Group Three where he pulled up Lame after coming off of a 15 week break from racing and despite that still found the line well enough in defeat. He is undefeated second up, has looked like a serious player in winning six of ten career starts and I think he has been set up a lot better this time round. Go well.

VALUE BET  - #4 - Running By
Running By is one I am happy to entertain at longer odds for Ciaron Maher here. She raced two weeks ago at Flemington in the Matron where she got a great steer from Allen that saw her running right behind the speed before trying very hard in the straight to only meet one better in Eternal Flame. I think she shapes up very well here off the back of that run and is hard to ignore here.

BEST BET - #5 - Imperatriz (BEST BET)
It’s hard to say if anything will be able to beat Imperatriz here and I don’t really fancy the idea of taking her on here. As long as everything is going okay post the Newmarket and she has recovered alright I think that she has panels on the majority of these. She just couldn’t get one over Cylinder in the Newmarket but ran a great race then and now comes back to her favourite course and to WFA racing and should be awfully tough to beat here.

THE DANGER - #6 - Bella Nipotina
There are only a couple key threats to Imperatriz in this race and I think Bella Nipotina rates as the most dangerous of them. She went very close to winning first up in the Lightning Stakes when powering home into fourth before stepping out in the Newmarket and working home well from not the easiest of spots. She’s third up now and this is generally where she starts to do her best work and I think she’s worth a look here. See what the market does.

VALUE BET - #7 - I Am Me
I Am Me looks like he has been set up well for this race for Ciaron Maher and generally runs very well with fresh legs. She hasn’t been seen since the Rupert Clarke when sticking on well behind Magic Time despite not being able to get the better of that horse. Her recent trial efforts have been fantastic for the return and she’s got three wins and a runner up placing in four first up runs so we know she should assert an element of strength at the very least here.
