Wednesday Racing Tips - Newcastle Racecourse 03/04/24

Eight races to be run and won at Newcastle tomorrow and we have quite a nice card on our hands with some of the more progressive runners in NSW stepping out to race as we look towards another weekend of big racing as the Autumn Group 1 races season is well underway. The feature of the day is the Polytrack Provincial-Midway Championship Wildcard Plate in race seven which should prove quite a strong contest and I have gone through this card and picked out my best betting spots so follow me below as I outline them!

BEST BET - #1 - Duke Of Bronte (BEST BET)
Joe Pride’s Duke Of Bronte looks like an extremely sharp horse returning to racing here for just his third career start after disappointing in his debut prep. However, he now comes back to racing off the back of a 21 week spell and having had the benefit of two very strong trials, winning both in good fashion and he draws well now and gets a huge claimer aboard.

THE DANGER - #4 - Queen Gee Em
Queen Gee Em returned from a 23 week spell last time out at this course a fortnight ago and looks to have come back in good order for the McConville stable. He found the lead easily then and was a clear leader in the straight but was just nailed on the line by a smart one and then was found to have pulled up ⅖ lame which explained him moving from side to side in the straight. He would have won if he was running straight then and shapes up very well here. Honest chance.

VALUE BET  - #7 - Keysborough
I think that Keysborough made a pleasing return to racing last time out for the Hawkes boys and he can go on with it here. He came off of a 19 week spell at Wyong when stepping out mid last month and setting two wide in the run before finding the lead on the turn and being a clear leader in the straight when only beaten in the latter stages of the run. He should be fitter and more tuned up off of that run and can improve sharply into this.

BEST BET - #1 - Extremely Frilly (NEXT BEST) 
Extremely Frilly rates as one of the smarter horses of the day stepping out here for David Pfieffer. She is knocking on the door with three solid runs this time in, placing in each and the most recent of which being at Gosford a couple weeks ago where he was bumped in jumping and set fourth in the run, chasing from three wide and only finding one better in the straight. I would say she just has to run up to that effort and get any more luck than last time to be winning this.

THE DANGER - #8 - Inquisitive Legend
Inquisitive Legend returns to racing here for the Curtis’ off the back of just the two career starts back in October last year where he showed a bit of talent in his second run, getting going hard in the straight to finish runner up. He now comes back to racing off a 22 week break and he doesn’t draw particularly well but this field doesn’t look too competitive but he’s trialled very well for the return, winning a Rosehill trial last time out and displaying a nice stride. He rates highly returning here. 

VALUE BET  - #10 - Summer Soiree
Summer Soiree should be approaching peak fitness third up here and can improve sharply into this. Neasham has her going pretty well in her debut prep and last stepped out at Wyong a fortnight ago when four weeks betwee runs and improving quite well, chasing hard to finish well in the last 200m despite not being a winning threat after being shuffled back hard at the beginning of the run. Should be hard fit third up here and with any more luck than last time out he should be improve here.

BEST BET - #4 - Kayobi 
Kayobi is the one to beat for me in what is a very competitive edition of the Wildcard Plate. He’s quite an impressive horse for the Kavanagh camp who boasts a very good fresh record with two first up wins and having placed in all other first up runs and comes back here off the back of two trials where he’s been ridden quietly. Has a fresh win at this trip as well and rates highly here.

THE DANGER - #6 - Willinga Freefall 
Willinga Freefall has a very solid second up record with a win and placing in two second up runs and looks to have returned to racing very nicely for Kris Lees, has to rate as the main danger here. He returned to racing at Gosford off of a 12 week break where he cut inside runners and chased very hard into the placings in an effort that he should have at least come second if not won given he encountered some trouble in the run. He will now be fitter and more revved up off the back of that effort and I expect a decent showing here.

VALUE BET - #2 - Cloudland (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Cloudland gets a very good set up here and cannot be ignored for Kris Lees coming into this third up. He’s had two runs back from a spell and has continued to improve between each and now looks ready to win. Gibbons was on him first up where he ran very well into the placings and now jumps back aboard for the third up ride, he’s got a win and two placings in three third up runs and I expect him to be strong here.

It’s a big day at Newcastle and there are some real stand out types in a few of these races that I think can take advantage of the front running bias that Newcastle has for the shorter courses especially. I am tipping against a few short priced favourites and as such I have combined my best runners together in a place multi.
