BEST BET - #13 - Midtown Boss (NEXT BEST)
Leading contender and favourite is Matt Laurie who I think is pretty sharp and should be hard to catch here. He ran down the Flemington straight a couple weeks ago where Zahra gave him a good steer and he was brilliant late, winning well. He meets a tougher field now but will be up to the task, Zahra sticks and I am keen to see what they can produce come race day.
THE DANGER - #1 - Tuvalu
At his best, Tuvalu spanks these. He’s a start the Smith camp who went over to Ascot to run in the Railway Stakes towards the end of last year where he wasn’t able to produce his best but prior to then recorded three back to back placings, two in Group two company and one in the Group one Underwood where he placed a close runner up to Alligator Blood. Think about that form relative to this, combined with him being a bomb fresh horse, has to rate highly here.
VALUE BET - #5 - Frankie Pinot
Frankie Pinot rarely disappoints in this race. He won it two years ago and then backed it up with a place last year and now comes back to this trip after racing in the Golden Mile at Bendigo where, to my eye, he was very good before just fading late behind El Soleado. I think a solid tempo suits him and he gets in light, has to be respected again this year.
