Memsie Stakes Preview and Tips 31/08/24

Can you feel Spring in the air? We’ve got one of the first Group One races, the Winx Stakes, under our belt and now Group One racing kicks off in Melbourne for what is sure to be an epic Spring Racing Carnival. My Saturday tips for the Memsie Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse are here as we see a field of just eight runners line up.

There may be just eight runners in the field, but two of them go by the names of Mr Brightside and Pride Of Jenni. You probably have heard of those two horses before! If you’re looking for horse racing tips, then you’ve come to the right place, as I’ll walk you through the field and tell you which runners you should focus on.

My Memsie Stakes tips are here on OnlyRacing and I can’t wait to see the first of hopefully many battles between Mr Brightside and Pride Of Jenni this Spring. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s dig in and check out my Memsie Stakes preview.

Race Tempo and Likely Leaders

It’s not a difficult one, figuring out the speed map for the Memsie Stakes. I’d be shocked if Pride Of Jenni doesn’t push forward and try to lead this one, along with Gentleman Roy. Also, with only eight runners in this race, everyone should get their fair shot at the win, if they are good enough.

From barrier four, one of the other favoured runners in the market, Mr Brightside, will be just behind the leaders, looking for the perfect time to pounce. If Mr Brightside is close enough to Pride Of Jenni in the closing stages, I think it will be his race to lose. Runners like Antino and Aegon will likely be near the back of the field and look for a late charge home.

Memsie Stakes Best Bet - Mr Brightside

It’s the battle I’ve been waiting for, between Mr Brightside and Pride Of Jenni. For this particular battle, I’m siding with the 2023 Memsie Stakes winner, Mr Brightside. Yes, this is a tough one to pick, especially so early in the season, but Pride Of Jenni is a little short in my eyes, especially when you consider her first-up record is none from seven.

Mr Brightside is currently paying $2.70 with PlayUp and is narrowly on the second line of betting, with Pride of Jenni the $2.60 favourite. The 2023 winner is unbeaten over this track and trip in five attempts and as long as he doesn’t let Pride Of Jenni open up too much of a gap, he should be winning this.

Mr Brightside to win @ $2.70.

Memsie Stakes Safe Bet - Antino

I reckon this Queensland visitor is a safe bet for the Memsie Stakes and could certainly cause an upset, beating out the likes of Mr Brightside and Pride Of Jenni. Only has one Caulfield race under his belt, which was a narrow defeat in the Toorak Handicap last year, so another performance like that and I’ll be sitting pretty.

He has a solid first-up record and still is fit from the Winter, Antino will likely give the two top runners in the market a run for their money, especially if they are too busy fighting each other. A jumpout with Pride Of Jenni in Cranbourne was great and the distance of 1,400m looks to work to his advantage. He is currently paying $6.50 to win with Bet365.

Antino (each-way) @ $6.50/$1.80.

Memsie Stakes Value Bet - Pinstriped

Value I’ve searched for and value I’ve found. But get on Pinstriped quick-smart if you’re interested, it seems like he is shortening by the second. I checked his odds yesterday and they were around the $16 mark. Now, we’re looking at odds of $12 from Dabble for this guy, which I think is still a steal.

He has been in and around this level for a while, but I think a win here would be a massive step up. He has a decent second-up record and has had success at this track in the past. I’m going to play it safe with Pinstriped in the Memsie Stakes and bet on him to place, at odds of $2.45.

Dabble
Pinstriped to place @ $2.45.

Memsie Stakes The Danger - Pride Of Jenni

If there’s a danger to Mr Brightside, it has to be Pride Of Jenni. She is class and the way she likes to race will suit her in his one, as long as Gentleman Roy doesn’t get in the way early on. She’ll go to the front of the field and try to hold out the likes of Mr Brightside in the closing stages.

She is too short for me to put on a place bet, but that’s what I have to recommend (because I think Mr Brightside is going to win). If you’re into the exotics maybe a Quinella with those two in it will suit your fancy. She is currently paying $2.60 with QuestBet. If you love her, then by all means pop on your win bet, but I think she needs another run under her belt.

Memsie Stakes Best Roughie - Aegon

For all those roughie lovers out there, I haven’t forgotten about you. After tipping four runners above, there’s not much left of the field that I haven’t tipped, but for my best roughie, I’m going with Aegon. I think Aegon is overs and his performance in the PB Lawrence Stakes should warrant odds closer to single digits.

Aegon is currently paying $15 to win with Bet Right and $2.90 to place. I’m leaning more towards the place bet and not the each-way bet and early in his prep is the time to bet on him I reckon. When looking at his first or second-up record, he is five from six. Gets the inside barrier, so won’t have to do any work in the beginning.

Aegon to place @ $2.90.
