The Silver Eagle Preview and Tips 19/10/24

We are really into the thick of the Spring Racing Carnival now, with races at both Randwick and Caulfield Racecourse. At Randwick, we have two Group One races, the King Charles III Stakes and the newly-minted Group One, The Everest. On top of those two races, there is also The Silver Eagle and The Kosciuszko.

Not to be outdone, the Caulfield Cup is also run this weekend in Melbourne. There may be so much action this weekend, but we have every aspect covered. OnlyRacing is your home to Group One race tips, so make sure you come back every week for the latest and greatest tips going around.

My Saturday tips have landed for The Silver Eagle, so make sure you strap yourself in because it’s going to be an epic ride. I’ve gone through every single runner in the field and crunched all the numbers. You can find all my best bets right here.

Race Tempo and Likely Leaders

In a field of 14 runners, it looks to be a fairly open affair. The pace is looking to be moderate, but who is likely to take the lead? Bases Loaded looks to be the quickest out of the gates, so a leading position is likely, along with Veight. Ostraka, the current narrow favourite, has fairly good barrier speed as well.

Ostraka will probably settle just off the leaders, waiting for the perfect time to strike in the closing stages. Another one of the more favoured runners, Kimochi, will likely settle off-pace, so she’ll need to ensure she takes advantage of any gaps when they open up to be in this race.

The Silver Eagle Best Bet - Kimochi

The Silver Eagle in 2024 is certainly an open field with many genuine chances. At the time of writing, there are five runners in single digits, with another two listed with odds of $10. For my best bet, I’m siding with Kimochi, who is currently on the second line of betting by a whisker. The mare is paying $4.60 to win The Silver Eagle with PlayUp.

Her campaign has been fairly successful so far and she started things with a win in the Group Three Toy Show Quality. She backed that up with a fourth in the Group One Manikato Stakes where she was caught deep but finished strongly. She’ll have to overcome a wide barrier here, but I have confidence in Kimochi.

Kimochi to win @ $4.60.

The Silver Eagle Safe Bet - Veight

I was tossing up between Kimochi and Veight for who would claim the spot as my best bet for The Silver Eagle. As you’ve already read, the top sport went to Kimochi, so I’m slotting Veight in as my safe bet. He is another coming through the Group One Manikato Stakes and he contested that one first-up.

I think that was a run to blow out the cobwebs because it was kind of a race to forget. James McDoland sticks with him again here and Veight is paying $7.50 to win the race with our friends at Bet365. The rise in trip should also suit Veight and the race looks a bit easier than the Manikato Stakes. A serious contender.

Veight (each-way) @ $7.50/$2.45.

The Silver Eagle Value Bet - Stretan Angel

In an open field, there’s usually value to be found and I think Stretan Angel fits the bill perfectly here. I think the mare will enjoy the extra 100m she gets here from her last start in the Group Two Gilgai Stakes, where she finished third by just 0.4L. She wound up in that one very well but just didn’t have enough time.

Never seen her go around in a 1,300m race but the run in the Gilgai Stakes gives me confidence here. In an open field for The Silver Eagle, Stretan Angel represents one of the more serious contenders and is currently listed with odds of $8.00 with Dabble. Gets in decently at the weights and has the skills to give this a real shake.

Dabble
Stretan Angel (each-way) @ $8.00/$2.75.

The Silver Eagle The Danger - Ostraka

Putting Ostraka down as my danger for the race as he can give this one a real shake if his competitors aren’t on their a-game. The 4YO gelding is looking for a hat trick of wins and while The Silver Eagle on Saturday is a step up in terms of class, you can’t knock his winning form.

It’s a fairly open market for The Silver Eagle, but Ostraka is the current narrow favourite with QuestBet, paying $4.10 to win. Sees a sizable drop in weight from his first two runs so far this prep, so he might feel like a brand-new horse! Draws the widest barrier of them all, but that may work to his advantage as he can more easily stay out of trouble early.

Ostraka (each-way) @ $4.10/$1.76.

The Silver Eagle Best Roughie - Port Lockroy

Port Lockroy isn’t a massive long-shot roughie but the 4YO stallion is paying $10 to win The Silver Eagle with Bet Right. However, I do like the look of him and think he has a great chance of putting in a stellar performance on Saturday. Loved what I saw last time out running over the top of them in a BM94 to finish just 0.3L off the pace in third.

In that race, Port Lockroy was up against Ostraka, who is the current narrow favourite in this one. While there is a swing in the weights, not in the favour of Port Lockroy, I reckon the extra 100m he’ll get here suits perfectly. He also gets a decent barrier and with a little bit of luck, he’s a top-three change.

Port Lockroy to place @ $3.20.
