About the Provincial-Midway Championships Final
Originally known as the Provincial Championships Final, the Provincial-Midway Championships Final was expanded in 2022. The race takes a similar format to that of the Country Championships Final which takes place during Day One of The Championships.
The concept for the Provincial-Midway Championships Final originally centred around a series of different separate qualifying races at each Provincial Club, including; Kembla Grange, Newcastle, Wyong, Gosford and Hawkesbury. The top three in each of those qualifying races booked themselves a spot in the final race during Day Two of The Championships at Randwick Racecourse.
Things were expanded in 2022 though and there are now seven qualifying races (each with a prize money of $150,000) which are as follows:
- Three races exclusively for Provincial-trained runners (the top two in each race book their spot in the final).
- Three races for Provincial-trained and Midway-eligible runners (the top two in each race book their spot in the final).
- One Wild Card race for runners that completed in one of the previously mentioned qualifying races (the top three in this race book their spot in the final).
The Provincial-Midway Championships Final is held under set weights conditions and was first launched in 2015 to shed more light on regional runners. Each year the race garners more and more interest, even though the race isn’t technically a Group 1.
The race takes place during Day Two of The Championships at Randwick Racecourse, which is on the same day as races like the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, the Queen of the Turf Stakes, the Australian Oaks and the Sydney Cup. With so many Group One races on this day, it truly is the best place for Provincial/ Midway horses to show countless horse racing fans what they’ve got.
So much action is to be had at Randwick Racecourse throughout The Championships, so it’s no surprise that it is one of the top tracks in the country. If you want to see something a little bit different, like runners, trainers and jockeys you’ve never seen before, it is certainly worth checking out the Provincial-Midway Championships Final.

Provincial-Midway Championships Final Best Bet - Tavi Time
It’s a fairly open affair, as we have come to expect in the Provincial-Midway Championships Final. After a lot of digging around, I’ve finally landed on Tavi Time as my next best for the race on Saturday. He has been the top horse in the market for a while and I’m sticking with him, there’s no reason to get off!
I think he has a lot more class than many of the other runners in this race and it wouldn’t surprise me to see him in more Saturday races in metropolitan areas. He is as fit as they come. Will have to overcome the top weight and the wide barrier, but I don’t think that is an issue at all.
Provincial-Midway Championships Final Next Best - Territory Express
Narrowly behind Tavi Time for favouritism in the betting market is Territory Express. Should have won the Ajax Stakes in my opinion. Got too far back in that race and then had the difficult job of weaving through traffic. Things didn’t open up for him in that race but drops in class a little bit here and I think his only real competitor is the current favourite, Tavi Time.
Has been performing well in this prep including a win at Kembla Grange over 1,400m. The soft track and step back in trip all work for him. Only has to carry 56kg, so he could very well put on a bold showing come the closing stages of the race.
Provincial-Midway Championships Final Best Roughie - Strait Acer
I found it very difficult to find a runner at a value that I would feel comfortable putting forward as my best roughie for the Provincial-Midway Championships Final. So, we are all just going to have to settle for the current $7.50 chance, Strait Acer, as my best roughie. He just needs to have a clean race and I think he should run top three.
Out-of-character poor performance in the qualifier at Kembla Grange, but put things right in the qualifier at Wyong. He was wide in that qualifier but came home strong to finish second. He is a classy horse and is good enough to compete in Stakes races, so respect has to be given.

In 2024, we saw a field of 15 runners line up for the Provincial-Midway Championships Final. On top of this, there are three emergencies as well, so if there are any scratchings we will still have a full field for the race. In the end, we saw one scratching, Nosey Parker, which meant that the first emergency, Little Beginnings, got his shot in the final field.
If you’re new to the world of horse racing, you’ll quickly learn that scratchings are a fairly common occurrence. They can happen at any time and for several different reasons. If you’ve placed a bet on the Provincial-Midway Championships Final, you should keep a close eye on things.
Something else you should look into is the barrier draw. The barrier each runner jumps from can sometimes have a significant impact on the end results. Some runners also have a racing style which means they prefer an inside or outside barrier. Some barriers have also seen more success than others in the past as well.
Provincial-Midway Championships Final Form Guide
With a race like the Provincial-Midway Championships Final, which has only been around since 2015, it can be difficult to find patterns when it comes to the past winners. We always look into the Provincial-Midway Championships Final form guide as the data and stats are vital to helping us nail down a potential winner.
We know you are busy and may not necessarily have time to go through the form guide, so we’ve done all the heavy lifting. The team at OnlyRacing have gone from the Provincial-Midway Championships Final form guide and have found some key form indicators that you need to know about before placing any bets. Let’s check out what we found below!
In the limited amount of data that we do have, we’ve found that favourites have had a fairly successful strike race, winning on four occasions since 2015. You should also look into runners who have had success (or at least raced) at a higher Class level.
Runners who can win a Saturday metropolitan race should also be considered, especially if there is some tough competition in that particular race. Also look for runners that have success at the 1,400m distance, with experience at Randwick Racecourse as well.
As you may already know, it can be a wet and wild ride in Sydney during Autumn, so look for runners who have experience on Heavy or Soft tracks. After the Provincial-Midway Championships Final, some successful runners could make their way up north to Queensland for their Winter Racing carnival, so keep an eye out there!
Provincial-Midway Championships Final Horses

Bobbing won the Provincial-Midway Championships Final in 2019 and in his later years also contested races like The Kosciuszko and the Country Championships Final. He finished his career with a record of 22:5-5-1 and was unplaced in his one attempt at Group 2 level.

All the best horse racing betting apps will release markets for the Provincial-Midway Championships Final before the event, so you can bet on whatever market you desire. As soon as the odds are released, you’ll notice they are constantly jumping around. Several factors influence a change in the odds, so you should keep an eye on things.
When it comes to horse racing markets, if you are going to get your bets on early, look for when the market is “Before Noms” because this means you’ll get your stake back if the runner isn’t included in the final field.
