About the Queen of the Turf Stakes

The Queen of the Turf Stakes is one of the biggest races on the Australian calendar for fillies and mares. It acts as the grand final for middle-distance runners during Sydney’s Autumn Racing Carnival. The race is undoubtedly one of the biggest Group One races and sees some of the best fillies and mares the country (and even the globe) have to offer.

This race forms one part of what is known as Day Two of The Championships, which is headlined by none other than the Queen Elizabeth Stakes. The other Group 1 races that are run on the same day and at the same track include; the Australian Oaks and the Sydney Cup.

The Provincial-Midway Championships Final is also run at Randwick on the same day as the other four Group 1 races, but this race technically isn’t a Group 1. With all this racing taking place at Randwick Racecourse over the Autumn Racing Carnival, it’s easy to see why many believe that Randwick is one of the top tracks in the country.

We have seen some of the best fillies and mares win the Queen of the Turf Stakes over the years. The likes of Typhoon Tracy, More Joyous and Appearance have all graced the honour roll. If a filly or mare can win the Coolmore Classic or Emancipation Stakes, they are exempt from the ballot for the Queen of the Turf Stakes.

Queen of the Turf Stakes Best Bet - Atishu

I think Atishu can get the job done over the current favourite, Zougotcha, so I’m putting her on top as my next best for the Queef of the Turf Stakes on Saturday. Atishu was actually my best roughie for the race in 2023, but I think she comes into the race this year in much better form and so does the market!

She could have raced in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, but connections have opted for this race instead, which shows you how confident they are that Atishu will put her best foot forward. There is a small question mark about the drop down in distance, but she is better than she has ever been and it would take an excellent race by one of the other competitors to beat her.

Queen of the Turf Stakes Next Best - Zougotcha

While I do think Atishu is the best bet for the Queen of the Turf Stakes, hot on her heels is the pre-race favourite (at the time of writing), Zougotcha. She is coming into the race in red-hot form, beating Lady Laguna in the Millie Fox Stakes (Group 2) first up and then winning the Canterbury Stakes (Group 1) in her next race.

In her last start, she ran over the top of them in the Coolmore Classic (Group 1). JMac steps up again and the pair have a great relationship. The inside barrier works well for her and I think it will be a fight out to the finish between Zougotcha and Atishu.

Queen of the Turf Stakes Best Roughie - Semana

I think Semana has a genuine chance of turning a few heads in the Queen of the Turf Stakes on Saturday. She is currently listed at $11 and presents the best value for the race, in my opinion. She was narrowly defeated (and denied a hat-trick of victories) in the Coolmore Classic, by none other than Zougotcha, who as we already know, lines up in this race as well.

Before that race, she put in strong efforts and won a Group 2 at Rosehill in this prep. She beat some pretty handy horses as well, the likes of Revolutionary Miss as well as Olentia. She’ll relish the firmer track and I think the step up to the mile is a good thing considering how strongly she hit the line last time out.

In the 2024 Queen of the Turf Stakes, we saw a field of 17 runners confirmed. Before the jump, there were two scratchings in the race, which were Foxy Frida and Tiz Invincible. This meant the field was reduced to 15 runners, as there weren’t any emergencies confirmed for the race.

You’ll quickly notice just how common scratchings are in horse racing. It may seem weird that a horse could be scratched from a race like the Queen of the Turf Stakes where this is $1 million up for grabs, but it still does happen. There are many reasons for this and they can happen at any time before the race.

On top of keeping an eye on scratchings for the Queen of the Turf Stakes, you should also look at the barrier draw. The barrier a runner jumps from can play a major role in the success of their race. Some barriers have seen more success than others as well, so it’s worth checking out for sure.

Queen of the Turf Stakes Form Guide

If you’re interested in some of the data and patterns behind the Queen of the Turf Stakes races, then you have come to the right place. The Queen of the Turf Stakes form guide looks through all the key form indicators and brings out some patterns that could point you in the direction of a winner!

There is a lot to look at when it comes to the Queen of the Turf Stakes form guide, but you don’t have to do all the heavy lifting. Here at OnlyRacing, we’ve made things easy for you! We’ve gone through all the form and found the biggest nuggets of information that we think could be critical in the success of finding a winner. Check out all the key form indicators below!

The best lead-up races to look into include the Emancipation Stakes and the Coolmore Classic. Those two races produce more winners in the Queen of the Turf Stakes compared to any other races, as well as this, if a filly or mare can win one of those races, they are exempt from the ballot.

From 1996, we’ve seen 13 winners come from the Coolmore Classic specifically and in this time five horses have managed the double, including Zougotcha in 2024. Also since 1996, only three winners have had their final lead-up run from outside of Sydney. So, it certainly pays to stick with runners who are racing in NSW.

In terms of the age of winners, 4YOs have the best record. They are the most successful age group which includes seven winners since 2010. In fact, there have been only two mares over the age of five that have won the Queen of the Turf Stakes in 30 years, which include Con Te Partiro (2020) and Nettoyer (2021).

Look for runners that are in form as well. Since 2005, we have only seen six winners finish worse than third in their lead-up race. When it comes to the starting barrier, only two winners have won from a double-digit barrier since 2001!

There’s a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to the favourite. In the period of 2004 to 2012, we saw the favourite win every year but one. Most recently, it’s been a different story though with many upsets taking place. In the last six years, we’ve seen four winners jump with double-digit odds.

Queen of the Turf Stakes Horses

We have seen some of the best fillies and mares going around win the Queen of the Turf Stakes. There are many Queen of the Turf Stakes horses that we would love to feature in this section but we only have a certain amount of space dedicated to this section!

We’ve had to make some tough calls on which runners to feature here, so don’t come at us if your favourite horse hasn’t made the list! Check out some of the best Queen of the Turf Stakes horses to ever win the race below:

Divine Madonna - 2007

Divine Madonna won four Group 1 races throughout her career which helped her to amass a total of over $2 million in prize money. She won the Champions Mile, the Toorak Handicap as well as the Empire Rose Stakes. In her 26 career starts, she only finished outside the top five on two occasions.

Typhoon Tracy - 2010

Crowned the 2009/10 Australian Racehorse of the Year, Typhoon Tracy won six Group 1 races throughout her career, including the 2010 Queen of the Turf Stakes. Some of the other key races she won included; the Coolmore Classic, the CF Orr Stakes and the Futurity Stakes.

More Joyous 2011 & 2012

Straight after Typhoon Tracy, we have More Joyous, who is the only runner able to win the Queen of the Turf on multiple occasions. Probably her greatest achievement was winning the 2012 Queen Elizabeth Stakes. She also won over $4 million in prize money throughout her career.

Alizee - 2018

Alizee was the winner of three Group 1 races, including the 2018 Queen of the Turf Stakes. Her last Group 1 victory came in the 2019 Futurity Stakes and her career record stands at 29:10-3-3. With over $3 million in prize money, it’s easy to see why Alizee makes the list of some of the best Queen of the Turf Stake horses!

Queen of the Turf Stakes Odds

If you are betting on the Queen of the Turf Stakes, one of the most important pieces of information you’ll need is the odds. The Queen of the Turf Stakes odds will tell you how likely the bookie thinks a certain bet will be successful.

All the best horse racing betting apps in Australia will open horse racing markets for the Queen of the Turf Stakes before the event. This means you can get your bets on for the race sooner than you think! PlayUp has not released their odds for the Queen of the Turf Stakes, so you’ll have to wait a little bit to get your bets sorted.

Soon, you’ll have the ability to see which runners are favoured in the market and see if there’s any value to be found in any other runners. When the odds are released, you’ll notice a lot of fluctuations. Many factors go into the odds of a runner, so if you see a price you like, it’s a good idea to jump on board while you can!

We also think it’s a good idea to bet when the market is listed as “Before Noms”. This is because if the runner you’ve bet on doesn’t make the final field, you’ll get your stake back! As well as this, you’ll usually find higher odds for the same runner the further out from the event you bet.

The race takes place during Sydney’s Autumn Racing Carnival and more specifically, The Championships, which is known as one of the biggest horse racing carnivals on the Australian racing calendar.

The race was first run back in 1972 and the winner of the inaugural Queen of the Turf Stakes was Refulgence. Previously, the race was run as a handicap event, but in 2005 this changed to a weight-for-age event. This change helped improve the quality of runners that take part in the race each year, which resulted in an elevation of the race to Group 1 status.

Up until 2014, the Queen of the Turf Stakes was run at a distance of 1,500m and took place at Rosehill Racecourse. Things changed when the race became a part of The Championships, which resulted in a change in race distance to 1,600m and a change in racecourse to Randwick.

In 2018, Alizee broke the race record, which still holds up today. Alizee ran the race in a time of 1:34.94. The most successful trainer in the Queen of the Turf Stakes is Gai Waterhouse (with some of her latest victories coming in a trainer partnership with Adrian Bott) with eight victories.

We know you came to our Queen of the Turf Stakes page for a reason, but if you’re interested in learning more about some of the other Group 1s on the calendar, all you have to do is visit our Group One races list. We’ve got over 100 races for you to sink your teeth into!
