Golden Rose Stakes Preview and Tips 28/09/24

Here we go. Group One racing on Saturday at Rosehill Racecourse after the excitement of Friday night racing at Moonee Valley Racecourse, thanks to the Manikato Stakes. It’s the Golden Rose Stakes and boy is it a nice little field, with the likes of Broadsiding, Traffic Warden, Storm Boy and Linebacker all with single-digits.

With four of the now 10 (thanks to the scratching of Daggers) in single-digits, that tells me it’s a fairly open field. But who will get the chocolate and hopefully go on to bigger and better things later in the Spring? Well, only time will tell, but I have crunched all the numbers and have some thoughts.

There’s plenty going around in this brain of mine and I’ve found some best bets, which wasn’t an easy task, but I’m up for the challenge. My Saturday tips have landed here at OnlyRacing and just like all the other Group One races during the year, I’ve got five tips for you, so there’s something for everyone.

Race Tempo and Likely Leaders

So, who’s going to lead the Golden Rose Stakes? Well, I think a genuine tempo is on the cards, thanks to the likes of Storm Boy, Mayfair and Anode, who have all shown interest in leading the way in the past. JMac on Broadsiding is going to look proactively from the inside draw as well.

Linebacker, one of the other hot chances in the race, is likely to land mid-field with some nice cover. While Traffic Warden might go back to the rear of the field, not use any energy and wait for the perfect time to strike. I think all runners in this one should get their fair chance if they are good enough.

Golden Rose Stakes Best Bet - Broadsiding

There’s a lot of ones popping up here for Broadsiding and I’m hoping that is a sign of things to come, with a first place in the Golden Rose Stakes. He is currently the $3.30 favourite with PlayUp and for good reason too. Broadsiding is a beast and his two trials since the winter have been excellent.

Before his trials, he is coming off back-to-back Group 1 wins in the Inglis Sires Produce Stakes and the J J Atkins. If you haven’t already, you should watch the J J Atkins replay, where he wins by 4.3L. Yes, he does face tougher competition here, but he still oozes class and is certainly the one to beat in my eyes.

Broadsiding to win @ $3.30.

Golden Rose Stakes Safe Bet - Traffic Warden

Traffic Warden looks a pretty safe bet in my opinion and it would take something special for him to not be in the finish. A nice victory in the Run to the Rose a couple of weeks ago has put him in fine fiddle for this one and I think he’ll enjoy the additional 200m he is going to get here.

He is a classy colt and could very well break through for his first Group One victory here. He has come close on a couple occasions, so now might be the time. He looks a lot fitter, if that’s even possible and he’ll make sure all the other runners know he is there. Traffic Warden is currently paying $4.00 with Bet365.

Traffic Warden (each-way) @ $4.00/$1.65.

Golden Rose Stakes Value Bet - Linebacker

Putting Linebacker as my value bet because I certainly think he is worth more than the $6.00 we are currently getting for him to win, thanks to Dabble. Yes, he is one of the four runners that is currently listed in single-digits, but I think he should be more around the $4.00 mark. So get while the going is good, I say!

The 3YO has already achieved a lot in his short career and I’m expecting further improvement in this race. With just four career starts under his belt, he already has a Group One placing and is a winner of two other races. Kerrin McEvoy sticks with him and I reckon he’ll eat up the 1,400m.

Dabble
Linebacker (each-way) @ $6.00/$2.05.

Golden Rose Stakes The Danger - Storm Boy

If Storm Boy has sorted out his issues with missing the start, he has to be the main danger in this race that could upset Broadsiding (and me!). I’ll be watching the start closely, if he jumps well, then he almost becomes my favourite to win, but that’s not a chance I’m willing to take just yet. Storm Boy is currently paying $4.70 for the win with QuestBet.

Hedging my bets a bit with Storm Boy for the Golden Rose Stakes and popping him down for the win as well. That’s just how much of a danger I think he’ll be to my best bet in the race. Storm Boy will likely look to lead or be close to the front and the wide barrier doesn’t really help, but he has got speed, hopefully, it’s enough.

Golden Rose Stakes Best Roughie - Emirate

I found it a bit difficult to nail down a roughie in this one. However, I’ve landed with Emirate and while I don’t think he can win this one, I think a top-three finish is on the cards, especially if he brings his a-game. Emirate is currently paying $13 for the win and $3.30 for a top-three finish at Bet Right.

Chased hard in the Run to the Rose last time out, but ultimately finished fifth. I liked that run and it was actually the first time he suffered defeat in his short career. He gets a decent barrier draw and if things go well, I think he is good enough to take advantage of the situation.

Emirate to place @ $3.30.
