Rosehill Gold Cup Preview and Tips 02/11/24

We are treated to a massive day of racing on Saturday. In total, there are six high-profile races, including three Group One races. It is The Golden Eagle Day at Rosehill Racecourse, which features The Golden Eagle, the Rosehill Gold Cup and the Russell Balding Stakes. All of these aren’t Group Ones, but the prize money is insane.

In Melbourne, we have Derby Day, with the Victoria Derby, the Empire Rose Stakes and the Coolmore Stud Stakes. While it is an epic day of racing, it is still just the entrée to the main meal which is the Melbourne Cup, which will take place on Tuesday, November 5. It seems like the quality of racing is endless at the moment.

Get comfy as I’ve got my Saturday tips for all six races mentioned above. However, for this article, in particular, I’m covering the Rosehill Gold Cup for OnlyRacing. We see a field of 13 runners, after the scratching of Trust In You. So, keep reading to see my best bets for the 2024 Rosehill Gold Cup.

Race Tempo and Likely Leaders

There’s a lot of speed in this race, with several runners looking to push forward, so I’m expecting the race to be run at a pretty fast pace. The likes of Bear On The Loose, Saganti, Relentless Voyager and Hoo Ya Mal all have great barrier speed. Any one of those four could end up leading this one.

It’s an open field, but the current favourite with PlayUp, Hinged, will probably sit just off the pace, getting some cover before peeling off in the home straight. The four runners mentioned above are all among the main chances, so it becomes critical for all of them to find a spot they like in transit.

Rosehill Gold Cup Best Bet - Relentless Voyager

Very difficult to nail down my best bet here, so many live chances for the 2024 Rosehill Gold Cup. After a little bit of back and forth, I’m going with Relentless Voyager. The key reason I’m going with Relentless Voyager is that he brings in some pretty solid European form. Relentless Voyager is currently on the second line of betting at PlayUp, with odds of $5.50.

A little question mark around that fact is that it's his first run in Australia, but I just couldn’t ignore that form. Good performance in the Ebor Handicap at York in August, finishing strongly behind the likes of Sea King and Onesmoothoperator (both of which have also come to Australia and won).

Relentless Voyager to win @ $5.50.

Rosehill Gold Cup Safe Bet - Hinged

Out of the local hopes, I think Hinged is one of the best. I’m putting the Group One winning mare down as my safe bet and if Relentless Voyager isn't up to par, she’ll be in this up to her eyeballs. At Bet365, Hinged is currently the equal $5.50 favourite with Relentless Voyager. I like that she’ll get a little more distance in this race as it suits her.

Last time out she finished third in the Group Three Angst Stakes after being forced out wide. She finished strongly in that one and this time out gets Joao Moreira in the saddle. Hopefully, we will see a more positive ride here from barrier five and she gets in decently in the weights as well.

Hinged (each-way) @ $5.50/$2.20.

Rosehill Gold Cup Value Bet - Fawkner Park

Fawkner Park’s odds are shortening, but I still think there’s enough value there. When I checked the odds yesterday, the gelding had odds of $9.00, now we are getting $7.50 with Dabble. The 6YO will have to lump around the top weight and jumps from a wide barrier so that’s why I didn’t put him in as my best bet.

Despite that, I think he is speaking at the right time. He comes into the Rosehill Gold Cup third-up and has shown improvement from his first to his second run. Don’t forget about his third-up record either. The gelding is unbeaten in three third-up attempts. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him continue to shorten, so get on ASAP if you're interested.

Dabble
Fawkner Park to place @ $2.65.

Rosehill Gold Cup The Danger - Nonconformist

Not only do I think Nonconformist could be the danger in this race, but I think he also presents some pretty good value. Nonconformist comes into the Rosehill Gold Cup third-up and has had two decent runs in Sydney so far this prep. He finished third in the Chelmsford Stakes and then fifth in the Hill Stakes (both Group Twos).

At QuestBet, we are still getting decent each-way odds for the gelding, currently at $9.75 to win the race. His two runs so far this prep have set him up nicely for this one. He comes into this race rock-hard fit and I reckon he could run an excellent race from any barrier, he’ll jump wide, from barrier 12.

Nonconformist (each-way) @ $9.75/$3.10.

Rosehill Gold Cup Best Roughie - Medatsu

Don’t get me wrong, this is a massive step up for Medatsu, but the 4YO is heading in the right direction and if Chris Waller has worked his magic (like he usually does), I wouldn’t be surprised to see a top-three finish here. Last time out, we saw the gelding win a BM88 at Rosehill, over 2,000m.

That’s the same track and distance we get here for the Rosehill Gold Cup. Is yet to place at Group level, but the form coming into this one is hard to knock. We are currently getting $13 for the win, with Bet Right and he will carry just 53kg on his back, compared to 60kg for Fawkner Park.

Medatsu to place @ $3.80.
