Caulfield Guineas Preview and Tips 12/10/24

Another week, another server of Group One races to feast over. This Saturday we have three Group Ones taking place, with the spotlight firmly on Caulfield Racecourse, as all three races take place at this track. Melbourne’s Spring Racing Carnival is certainly starting to heat up.

The three Group One races OnlyRacing has provided tips for include; the Caulfield Guineas, the Toorak Handicap and the Might and Power Stakes. It’s pretty much non-stop action at Caulfield Racecourse, so make sure you’ve cleared your schedule and are in front of a TV.

My Saturday tips are hot off the presses for all three Group One races, but for this article in particular, I’m covering the Caulfield Guineas. For the Caulfield Guineas, I’ve nailed down five tips, so there are best bets for every type of bettor out there.

Race Tempo and Likely Leaders

There are a few that could lead this one and in the fairly small field, we are looking at the likes of Mayfair, Wanaruah and Feroce who will try to be near the front of the pack. Both Mayfair and Wanaruah are from the Waterhouse/ Bott stable, so I would expect those two to lead at a fairly fast tempo.

The favourite, Broadsiding, jumps from a wide barrier, so expect him to sit near the rear of the field, trying to stay out of trouble in the early stages and with some cover. He’ll look for the best time to make his move, with many expecting him to run over the top of all these in the Caulfield Guineas.

Caulfield Guineas Best Bet - Broadsiding

Not a lot (or any really) value to be had with the pre-race favourite in the Caulfield Guineas. Broadsiding is currently paying $1.55 to win the race, thanks to our friends at PlayUp. It is a race that lacks a bit of depth in my opinion and I think he is a class above here, so it should be an easy victory, but as we all know things can go wrong quickly in horse racing.

Broadsiding gave favourite backers a little bit of a scare last time out, when being sent around as the favourite, but did end up getting the chocolates. He tackled the Golden Rose Stakes first-up and I think he’s shaken out the rust now and the step up to the mile looks great. Hopeful of an easier win in this one. Who needs the stress?!

Broadsiding to win @ $1.55.

Caulfield Guineas Safe Bet - Mayfair

I would be really surprised if Mayfair doesn’t run top three here, so I’m putting him down as my safe bet for the 2024 Caulfield Guineas. If you jumped on board with him earlier in the week, congratulations to you. Mayfair was paying around the $11 mark to win on Monday, now the 3YO is paying $7.50 thanks to Bet365.

If Broadsiding isn’t up to scratch, it is Mayfair who is most likely to swoop in here, so I’ll be having a little play on him each-way. Mayfair was only 0.4L behind Broadsiding in the Golden Rose Stakes and before that, he was only 0.2L behind winner Lady Shenandoah in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality. Mayfair will be fitter for those runs, so he could upset here.

Mayfair (each-way) @ $7.50/$2.10.

Caulfield Guineas Value Bet - Angel Capital

I’ve been very impressed with what Angel Capital has been able to achieve so far this prep. The 3YO colt is going for the trifecta of wins here in the Caulfield Guineas and is currently paying $9.00 to win the race, thanks to Dabble. He won the Listed McKenzie Stakes and backed that up a few weeks later with a victory in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude.

Yes, this is a step up, but winning form is winning form and it needs to be taken seriously. I think the rise to the mile works well for him and he could really surprise a few people. I’m thinking about hedging my bets here and placing an each-way bet just in case he produces the run of his life.

Dabble
Angel Capital (each-way) @ $9.00/$2.30.

Caulfield Guineas The Danger - Evaporate

Do I think Evaporate is a danger to the short-priced favourite, Broadsiding? No. But he is a danger to all the other runners in the field and coupled with the fact he comes in with odds of $12 thanks to QuestBet, he’s not only a danger, but he presents some value as well. Looks like a win-win to me!

I was talking about winning form just before and you can’t get much better than this. Evaporate is looking to win his fifth race in a row, last time out he won the Group 2 Stutt Stakes by a length. He just continues to get better run after run, and Michael Dee retains the ride, so expect a good race from him.

Evaporate to place @ $2.55.

Caulfield Guineas Best Roughie - Public Attention

You want a juicy roughie, well I’ve got one! Public Attention has captured my attention and is currently paying $23 with Bet Right. Do I think he can win? Probably not, but much like a few others in the race, he is certainly capable of a top-three finish. He’ll just need some luck on his side and run one of the best races of his life (is that too much to ask for!).

He finished second in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude, which was only the third race in his career. Public Attention is super green and there’s going to be plenty of improvement run after run I reckon. I’ll be following Public Attention long after this race because I think he is a star of the future.

Public Attention to place @ $4.00.
