The Golden Eagle Preview and Tips 02/11/24

It’s one of the biggest Saturdays on the racing calendar with six key races to look forward to. The one with the most prize money? That’s The Golden Eagle, of course! The Golden Eagle might not be a Group One, but there’s a mammoth $10 million on the line. We are also only days away from the biggest race of them all, the Melbourne Cup.

Along with The Golden Eagle, which takes place at Rosehill Racecourse, we also see the Rosehill Gold Cup and the Russell Balding Stakes. Down south, we have three Group One races in Melbourne, the Victoria Derby, the Empire Rose Stakes and the Coolmore Stud Stakes.

I have Saturday tips for all six of the races mentioned, but for the purposes of this tips article, I’m going through The Golden Eagle. My best bets have landed here at OnlyRacing and I can’t wait to share with you who I think will have a great race. Keep reading to see who I’ve tipped for The Golden Eagle!

Race Tempo and Likely Leaders

Don’t think there will be a lot of speed early but we will see the likes of Ostraka and Lazzat go forward and probably fight it out for who leads. Tom Kitten will probably also look for a positive run, considering he’s jumping from barrier two.

The current favourite, Ascoli Piceno, will probably have no choice but to settle near the rear of the field, given that the mare is jumping from barrier 17. Others that will likely be near the back of the pack include Skybird and Southport Tycoon, who jump from barrier 16 and 15, respectively.

The Golden Eagle Best Bet - Joliestar

Seems kind of like a three-way race for the 2024 edition of The Golden Eagle, with Ascoli Piceno, Joliestar and Lazzat the only three runners in single-digits, with PlayUp. It was a difficult decision, but I do like the look of Joliestar though and she is currently on the second line of betting, at $5.00.

Last time out, she contested The Everest but didn’t get the luck she deserved. The Group One winner looks like she wants a little more distance in her runs and this is something she’ll get in The Golden Eagle. There’s an extra 300m in this one for her to chase down all the runners in front.

Joliestar to win @ $5.00.

The Golden Eagle Safe Bet - Ascoli Piceno

The favourite, Ascoli Piceno, slots in as my safe bet for The Golden Eagle in 2024. According to Bet365, Ascoli Piceno is the $4.00 favourite. This will be Ascoli Piceno’s first run in Australia after coming from Japan, so that’s a little question mark for me, along with the wide barrier.

However, her run last time out was great, winning a Group Three in Nakayama. In every scenario I see playing out, she runs well and I think she’s good enough to give this one a real shake. Books in form jockey Joao Moreira and carries the lightest weight of the race, so there are a couple of easy wins.

Ascoli Piceno (each-way) @ $4.00/$1.95.

The Golden Eagle Value Bet - Stefi Magnetica

I searched for value and think I’ve found it with Stefi Magnetica. Took me a while to nail down Stefi Magnetica because there’s a lot of decent value floating around in The Golden Eagle right now. The mare is currently paying $9.00 to take the win on Saturday, with Dabble.

Stefi Magnetica is another runner coming through The Everest and I think she’ll be looking for a bounce-back performance here. We all know just how good she can be, thanks to her victory in the Stradbroke Handicap earlier this year. She comes into The Golden Eagle third-up, so she’ll be as fit as ever to give this one a red-hot crack.

Stefi Magnetica to place @ $3.00.

The Golden Eagle The Danger - Lazzat

This French international is certainly the danger in The Golden Eagle, in my opinion. The gelding has simply been on fire and is still unbeaten in his career, now with a record of 6:6-0-0, thanks to a victory last time out in a Group One in August. It’s not just that he is winning, but also the amount of lengths he is winning by.

His biggest wins so far have come on rain-affected tracks and his average winning margin is more than 3L. This will be his first run in Australia, but he has speed and a decent turn of foot, which will suit him well on a track like Rosehill. Not sure how the form lines up, but it’s clear that he is in a league of his own. You can get $6.50 for Lazzat at the moment, with QuestBet.

Lazzat (each-way) @ $6.50/$2.35.

The Golden Eagle Best Roughie - Tom Kitten

Out of the locals, I think Tom Kitten is one of the best chances in The Golden Eagle. Came fourth last time out, behind the likes of Ceolwulf and Pride Of Jenni in the Group One King Charles III Stakes. Think he looks to be better placed now that he is against runners his own age.

Gets a decent gate as well, giving Ben Melham a lot of options. Tom Kitten needs to rise to the occasion, but the Group One winner does have what it takes. The odds on offer for Tom Kitten have remained pretty steady and we are currently getting $10 for him to claim victory in The Golden Eagle, with Bet Right.

Tom Kitten to place @ $3.40.
