Notable Races to Watch This Friday

There’s no shortage of races every day of the week, but Friday is one of the biggest days each week. We might not see a whole lot of Group 1 races like we do on a Saturday, but there are still quality races on.

We go through some of the key events, featured races and insights into rising star horses here:

Key Events and Featured Races

We cover top tips from the main tracks each Friday. Things are always changing in horse racing, so there are different tracks each Friday for our experts to dig into. We usually see key events and races on Saturday (like Group 1s, for example), but Friday is still a busy day.

We provide racing tips for Friday for featured races at tracks right around Australia. This includes:

Insights into Up-and-Coming Horses

All racehorses have to start somewhere and if there’s not a lot of form to go off, there are still some other areas you can look into to decide if the horse is going to be a rising star. Up-and-coming horses usually have a lot in common.

The insights you should look for in up-and-coming horses include:

  • Pedigree - Before a horse has even run a race or you get a good look at them, you can check out the pedigree. A sire that has previously produced high-quality, winning horses is the perfect place to start.
  • Muscle Tone - Race horses are powerful beasts and you should look at their back legs and quarters to get an idea of how strong they are. Healthy muscles are a sign of a healthy and fit horse.
  • Coat - A nice shiny coat is another area to look into and it is a fairly major indicator that the horse is healthy.
  • Balance - Up-and-coming racehorses should have a lot of balance, so they can successfully navigate turns in races and any bumps from competitors in the race.
  • Mannerisms - You’ll find that a calm horse is more likely to be a rising star. They usually have a higher level of focus and are relaxed yet alert.

Betting Strategies for Friday Racing

No matter if you are live betting or betting hours out from the race, developing a proper strategy is one of the most important things you can do. There are a lot of different moving parts when it comes to strategies and racing tips for Friday and we want to make things easier for you.

In this section, we will walk you through all the most popular bet types for Friday races and also highlight specific tips to improve your chances of success when placing bets on Friday (and it doesn’t just include following what the experts at OnlyRacing have chosen!).

Popular Bet Types for Friday Events

There are usually two categories that bet types would fall into, single bets (like Win and Place bets) or exotic bets (which include more than one runner in your bet). On top of this, there’s an additional bet type that doesn’t really fit into either of these categories.

The Multi bet is similar to exotics as it involves more than one runner in your bet, but the breadth involved with Multi bets can be much larger and can even involve bets across different racing codes, or sports in general. No matter the bet type, you can catch the race through live streaming, so you can see if you’re a winner.

Win and Place Bets Explained

If you’re looking for something simple this Friday, you can’t go wrong with a Win or Place bet. They are the easiest bet types to understand and you can even try an Each-Way bet, which is sort of like a hybrid of the Win and Place bet.

Our racing tips for Friday will always include at least one of the bet types explained here:

Bet TypeDefinition
Win BetSimply place a bet on the runner you think will win the race. The lower the odds, the more likely that particular runner will win the race, according to the bookie.
Place BetThis is where you choose a runner that you think will finish in the top three in the race. However, it is important to remember that third dividends are only paid out for fields of eight or more runners.
Each-Way BetIf you’re sitting on the fence a little bit, an Each-Way bet could be a good option. Here, you are essentially placing two bets, one on the runner to win the race and another for the runner to finish top three.

Exotic Betting Options for Friday

All horse racing betting sites will offer exotic betting options for Friday races. We usually find that the more established bookies offer a wider range of options. We have a full list of online bookmakers that goes through the markets available with each site, so that is a good place to start.

The most common exotic betting options that you’ll find with the majority of bookies include:

Bet TypeDefinition
QuinellaA Quinella involves picking the first two runners across the line, in any order. You can add more than two runners to your bet and this will improve your chances of winning.
ExactaThe Exacta is similar to the Quinella in the fact you are required to pick the top two runners in the race. However, this time, you must pick them in the correct order.
TrifectaFor a Trifecta, you must pick the first three runners across the finishing post. If you are choosing the runners in the correct order, then this is known as a Straight Trifecta.
First FourThe name is a dead giveaway here! The First Four involves choosing the runners you think will finish in the top four. A Straight First Four means you have to pick the four runners in the correct order.
Daily DoubleA Daily Double involves picking the winner of two predetermined races on the card for Friday. We usually see the third last and last race on the card as the two chosen races.
TrebleOne step up from the Daily Double is the Treble. The Treble involves picking the winner from three different races on the card and it is usually the last three races.
QuadrellaYou may know the Quadrella as the Quaddie and this is where you choose the winner from four different races on the card. The Quaddie is one of the most popular bet types and you can add more than four runners to increase your chances of success.

Multi Betting Options for Friday

The options are pretty much endless with a Multi. You can combine Win and/ or Place bets into one bet, which will increase your potential return. Same Race Multis are also available with most betting sites these days.

Some betting sites even allow you to Multi your Multi, which works to dramatically increase your potential payout. No racing code or sport is off limits, but it is up to the bookie to choose what markets are available for you to build your Multi.

Harness and greyhound betting is available to be included in Multis, so if your interest spreads across all three racing codes, that is something you could try out. You should confirm if the greyhound and harness racing betting sites have the specific Multi-markets available that you are looking at.

Tips for Smart Betting on Friday’s

It doesn’t matter the day of the week really, there are some tips we have put together for smart betting. These tips aren’t foolproof but are certainly a good starting point and are quite useful for those who are just getting started out in the world of horse racing betting.

Some of our top tips for betting on Friday’s include:

  • Form - Look into how well the runner has been performing as of late. Recent form is important to check out, but also consider the quality of races they have competed in.
  • Track Conditions - Runners are bred and have more success in different conditions. For example, if it has been raining in the days leading up to the race and a particular runner has a lot of success on a Heavy track, they might be worth looking into.
  • Weight - Some races are run at set weights, while others are weight-for-age or handicapped. Not needing to carry a lot of weight can be a real advantage for that runner.
  • Race Distance - Certain runners might perform better in short or longer races. You should check out the runner’s strike race at different distances and focus on the ones that are of a similar distance to the upcoming race.

General tips for betting on horse racing with betting sites:

  • Payment Methods - Make sure you check the payment methods available with different bookies. Some bookies might not have the options you want, so it’s important to know about the betting sites’ payment methods available.
  • Withdrawal Speed - Check the withdrawal speed of different betting sites. If you have a nice win and want to withdraw your funds straight away, you can! After your requested withdrawal, the time it takes to hit your account will vary. PayPal betting sites usually have a fast withdrawal speed.

Special Considerations for Friday Racing

Friday racing is somewhat of a unique beast and it is important you understand what’s involved to increase your chances of a profitable betting session. When we provide our horse racing tips for Friday, we usually consider the racing landscape, provide a betting strategy and always look for some value for you.

Understanding the Friday Racing Landscape

Friday is one of the busiest days of the week, but it's certainly not at a similar level to Saturday. This means that we usually see lesser-known races and horses that you might have never seen before. The best racehorses will usually stick to races that have Group status and those races will often take place on a Saturday.

This doesn’t mean there isn’t quality racing to be had though. You will usually see runners get their footing in the world of horse racing and if they are good enough, they will try their hand at a Group-level race. If you watch horse racing on Friday enough, you’ll get good at spotting the runners who might be special enough for Group racing.

Strategies for Betting on Lesser-Known Races

When it comes to Friday racing tips, here are some important strategies, especially for lesser-known races:

  • Conduct as much research as possible on each runner.
  • Look further than the favourite as favourites only win about 35% of the time.
  • Check the strike rate of each runner.
  • Avoid putting too much money down, especially if you can’t do a lot of research.
  • Choose the right bet type and it might be safer to stick with simpler bets.

How to Spot Value Bets on Fridays

There is almost always a value play to be had on Fridays. Our racing tips for Friday will try to find you some value, but if you’re looking to do it yourself, here are some tips:

  • There could be some unknown quantities for Friday racing and you may be able to take advantage of that.
  • Look for jockeys and trainers who have a good partnership or even jockeys and racehorses who have worked well together in the past.
  • Judge the competition and see if the odds really do stack up.
  • Keep an eye on the late money as this could be an indication of where the market thinks there is value.
