Warwick Farm Racecourse History

There’s a long and rich history at Warwick Farm Racecourse, with the land bought in the early 1880s by William Alexander Long. The Warwick Park estate was sold to William Forrester in 1882 and he changed the name of the track to Warwick Farm, to match his initials.

In 1889, Forrester and Edwin Oatley became the principals in the formation of the Warwick Farm Racing Club. After Forrester passed away, it was Oatley who owned the racecourse until he passed away and then his son became the manager for several years, until 1924.

Throughout World War II, the track was used as a camp by Australian, American and British armed forces. There have been many major races held at the track and we see that when one of the biggest Sydney racecourses undergoes reconstruction, Warwick Farm picks up the slack.

Distance:	Guide:
1,000m	Races at 1,000m start in a chute and runners have 650m before getting to the first and final turn, therefore, not much advantage is given to inside barriers.
1,100m	It’s a pretty similar race to the 1,000m distance, except runners now have a 750m sprint before the first and final turn.
1,200m	Again, quite similar to the two shorter race distances and now runners have an 850m straight to jostle for position before the last turn.
1,400m	At this race distance, runners have a 1,050m stretch before the final turn, therefore giving each runner their fair chance of winning the race if they are good enough.
1,600m	Horses at this race distance begin in a chute located after the final turn. Runners have 400m before the first of two turns, giving inside barriers a small advantage.
2,200m	We are back to the course proper now and runners have 300m before the first of three turns, which gives inside barriers a small benefit.
2,400m	At the 2,400m race distance, runners begin in a chute which is located 200m back from the 2,200m starting point. There’s 500m to contend with before the first turn, so inside barriers don’t have as much of an advantage.

How to Get to Warwick Farm Racecourse

Warwick Farm Racecourse is within walking distance of the Warwick Railway Station making public transport a good option. T2, T5 and T3 trains all stop at Warwick Farm Railway Station. Buses are also available and there’s even a free shuttle bus from Warwick Railway Station to Warwick Farm Racecourse.

Parking is also available if you want to drive yourself to the track. General admission parking is accessed via the Hume Highway at Gate C and members/ owners parking is also available via Governor Macquarie Drive. If you don’t want to drive and public transport doesn’t tickle your fancy, taxis or rideshares can get you to the track.
