Magic Millions Carnival

Magic Millions Carnival will be held on Saturday January 14th, 2023, at the Gold Coast Turf club in Queensland. It promises to be a massive race day, bringing together some of racing’s elite to battle it out in sunny Gold Coast. The meet has over $10 million AUD up for grabs with 40% of that prize money distributed in the two feature races of the day.

Whilst the entire Magic Millions Carnival will be a spectacle to behold as a jewel of Queensland racing, all eyes will be on the track for the two feature races of the meet: The Magic Millions 2YO Classic 2023 (All-In) and The Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (All-In) 2023. These restricted listed races will include some of racing’s best and brightest, so you don’t want to miss it!

In this review of the lucrative track meet, I will break down how and where to bet on the Magic Millions Classic and Magic Millions Guineas feature races. There will also be information on the track, race history and previous winners. As always, OnlyRacing have other Group 1 race pages, and other horse racing information.

Garza Blanca – EARLY BEST BET
A very solid colt with a career 5-2-1-0 record, coming off a second-place finish when starting as a $1.70 favourite. Slated for a couple good runs on the road to the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (All-In), looks to be a bit of value this far out from the feature race.

The only knock on Garza Blanca’s chances at a win this Magic Millions Carnival would be a preference towards the 1200m distance. Can still get this done at 1400m but came 9th in a field of 12 in the most recent start at the trip. With prize money already over $125,000, look to Garza Blanca to win the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (All-In).

Golden Boom – EARLY NEXT BEST
This three-year-old gelding is one of my favourite horses on the circuit right now. Like my best bet in Garza Blanca, seems to favour a slightly shorter trip, but is a super horse regardless. A career 3-2-1-0 record and over $125,000 in prize money.

Always closes as the favourite, at odds shorter than $2 on a couple of occasions. Hasn’t lost yet when leading with 400m to go and can finish like lightning. Big toss-up between Golden Boom and Garza Blanca as I expect both of them to comfortably be in the starting field come race-day at the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (All-In).

Shalailed – EARLY ROUGHIE PICK
A career 9-1-4-3 colt that keeps improving. Has started as favourite as of late and with good reason. Joh O’Shea does a brilliant job with him, and all the elite jockeys seem to want a crack.

A horse for all surfaces that comes in the placings near every time, favouring a 1200m trip. Will go nicely here thanks to a tendency towards consistent speed. Watch out for Shalailed in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (All-In)!

Magic Millions 2YO Classic 2023 (All-In)

Date: Saturday 14th January 2023
Time: 1:30pm AEDT
Prize Money: $2 million AUD

The Magic Millions 2YO Classic 2023 (All-In) feature race shares the same lucrative $2 million prize pool as the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (All-In) 2023, however the two-year-old race has a richer history and greater notoriety attached to it. The race is restricted to two-year-old horses purchased through Magic Millions Sales auctions located at eligible auctions in the race’s home of Gold Coast, as well as Adelaide, Perth and Tasmania.

The Star sponsored race will be run at a distance of 1200m on the Gold Coast Turf Club’s right-handed turf surface. The race is also weight restricted at 57kg for colts and geldings, and 55kg for fillies.

The prize money distribution for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic 2023 (All-In) at the Gold Coast Turf Club is as follows:

PlacingPrize Money
1st$1,140,000
2nd$360,000
3rd$180,000
4th$90,000
5th$50,000
6th, 7th, and 8th$20,000
9th and 10th$20,000
11th to 18th$10,100

Similarly, to the three-year-old feature race at the Magic Millions Carnival, the Magic Millions 2YO Classic 2023 (All-In) has yet to release an official field for the race. This information will be released to the public on Monday the 9th of January 2023, with the barrier draw occurring the following day at Surfers Paradise Beach in the Gold Coast.

It doesn’t hurt to look at the very early odds for eligible two-year-old runners, although they still must be selected for the race before having a shot at the $1,140,00 winner’s prize. Have a look below at the current odds for potential runners at the Magic Millions 2YO Classic 2023 (All-In):

Empire Of Japan – EARLY BEST BET
A career 1-1-0-0 record for this young colt in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic 2023 (All-In). Already nominated for this feature race and expected to have plenty of backing. I am probably hopping on for a little bit early-on just to lock it in before the odds change.

Peter and Paul Snowden have done wonders with him to have already won more than $100,000 at such a young age. Will be interesting to see Empire Of Japan at this longer trip, but I am expected fireworks one way or another.

Skirt The Law – EARLY NEXT BEST
Blistering pace of late. This young filly closed last start at fixed odds of $1.35. If that isn’t an indicator of this girl’s capabilities, I don’t know what is. A career 2-2-0-0 record for a whopping $160,000 in prize money already.

If you follow our tips here at OnlyRacing, I’ve already delved into what makes this horse tick, and have picked it as my best bet at Doomben Racecourse. Skirt The Law will likely close as favourite or close to, so it might be worth locking it in a bit early.

Chrysaor – EARLY ROUGHIE PICK
A young colt with great closing speed, having won his last start after being 5th at both the 800m and 400m marks. Closes at solid odds and always shows out. It’s also always a good sign when Waller is the trainer, usually getting the best out of his trainees.

Still improving at a rapid pace, looking to shed the pre-race earmuffs sometime soon. Looking to add to the already $70,000 won in prize money, my roughie pick for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic 2023 (All-In).

How to Bet on the Magic Millions

Have a look through our comprehensive bookmaker reviews to gain insight into reputable Australian bookmakers, what they can offer you, and how they can differentiate themselves in a saturated market.

Betting on the Magic Millions Carnival is almost a must if you are an avid horse racing fan like us all. The Carnival will offer a wide range of markets to bet on, with certain bookmakers such as PlayUp and Unibet offering a deep array of horse racing betting markets.

Most bookmakers are already offering early odds on the Magic Millions Carnival and its two feature races: Magic Millions 2YO Classic 2023 (All-In) and Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (All-In) 2023. These odds and markets will be listed under the bookmakers’ ‘futures’ markets, so be sure to look closely.

My recommendation for the Magic Millions Carnival is to bet on a wide range of markets to cover the entire meet. I will personally be placing a fixed win/place odd in every race, as well as a quinella/trifecta/first four exotic.

In addition, I will be placing on the early and regular quaddie which combines multiple runners in multiple races to have a crack at the pooled money for that market. Lastly, I will place a multi on some of my favourite bets throughout the Carnival.

Perhaps my biggest bets of the day will coincide with the feature races which tend to have the largest pools on offer. The exotics on these races will be paying out nicely if you go for an edgier pick. Similarly, the biggest races are also usually the best to watch, so definitely make sure to not miss the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (All-In) 2023 and the Magic Millions 2YO Classic 2023 (All-In) races!

How to Watch the Magic Millions

There is no better racing experience than being there in the flesh. This applies even more when it comes to the big Australian racing carnivals, such as this Magic Millions Carnival at the Gold Coast Turf Club in Queensland. Buy tickets for The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Raceday online through Gold Coast Turf Club and the Magic Millions website.

Although this is undoubtedly the best way to immerse yourself in a true horse racing experience, lots of us, me included, live outside of Queensland and far away from the Gold Coast Turf Club. So as an alternative, I tend to watch livestreams of the races on my bookie mobile apps.

Nowadays, offering a live racing stream on a racing-centric betting platform is essential to compete against other bookmakers. As time goes on, more and more bookies add this feature to their mobile product to gain more customers. Look at our bookmaker reviews to see which bookies you can watch the Magic Millions Carnival on.

As much as I would love to make the trek up to Gold Coast Turf Club for the meet, I will be watching on my phone and punting on my laptop. Have a look at our early picks and likely field of runners above to join me!

Magic Millions History

The Magic Millions Carnival has been a staple of Queensland horse racing for five years now, with one of the feature races – Magic Millions 2YO Classic 2023 (All-In) first being held in 1987. The race has had constraints on it since the very first edition, requiring the geldings, colts, and fillies to be under a set weight, as well as requiring the runners to have been bought from a Magic Millions eligible auction.

In 2017, Racing Queensland and Magic Millions gave a new look to what used to be known as the Queensland Summer Racing Carnival. Along with the new name, a drastic increase in prize money was introduced, with a whopping $10 million AUD being put up for grabs in 2023. The two feature races each have a prize pool of $2 million.

The Magic Millions 2YO Classic 2023 (All-In) is the first of three races throughout the calendar to have a prize pool of upwards of $1 million for two-year-old runners. The others are the Golden Slipper held at Rosehill Racecourse and the Blue Diamond held at Caulfield Racecourse.

It will be very interesting to see how this carnival develops, as its prize pool matches some of the other giant carnivals and is held at a track where the sun almost always shines. Personally, I look forward to January every year just because I know the Magic Millions Carnival is happening.
