Doomben 10,000 Tips

Ring, ring! It’s your Doomben 10,000 tips calling! We just love free horse racing tips here at OnlyRacing, it’s in our blood. We don’t just provide tips for every single Group 1 race on the calendar, but also Doomben tips. Our tips are written by a variety of experts, who have all spent a significant amount of time in and around the horse racing industry.

For the 2025 Doomben 10,000 specifically, our tips are not available. The final field is not yet confirmed and our experts aren’t able to crunch all the numbers to nail down their top three tips for the race. But when the time comes, we’ll have something for everyone with our Doomben 10,000 best bet, next best and best roughie.

We know you want tips, so take a look at what our experts cooked up for the 2024 race while you wait. Check out the details below:

Doomben 10,000 Best Bet - I Wish I Win

I Wish I Win is the favourite for a reason! He has only finished outside the top three in one race out of 10. That one unplaced run was when he finished fifth in the 2022 Toorak Handicap, just 1.35L off the leader. He is a walking highlights package, especially the TJ Smith Stakes in 2023 where he ran down none other than Giga Kick.

He is six weeks between runs and his first up effort was solid, a third place in the 2024 TH Smith Stakes. He draws barrier one, like he did in The Everest and we all know what happened there! I don’t think the barrier is of any concern, especially considering he’s got one of the best in the business on board, James McDonald.

Doomben 10,000 Next Best - Private Eye

Private Eye is currently on the third line of betting for the Doomben 10,000 and is listed at odds of $7.00. If Private Eye can achieve some of what stablemate Think About It has over the next horse racing carnival, I think we’re in for a treat. Private Eye is just pure class and he certainly give this a red hot crack.

His campaign over the Summer and Autumn probably didn’t shake out like he wanted it to, but he had a lot of excuses, so I’m willing to give him another chance. If Private Eye can bring his brilliance to the table for the Doomben 10,000, I think he could give the favourite a scare.

Doomben 10,000 Best Roughie - Stefi Magnetica

Bit of a longshot, but if you’re interested in roughies, I think I’ve found one worthy of a chance in Stefi Magnetica. Stefi Magnetica is listed at odds of $26 at the time of writing. Interesting choices by her connections in recent times, but I think she’s worthy of a small each-way bet for the Doomben 10,000.

She is unfound in the market, probably because of her rating, but she recently ran second in the Surround Stakes, so the sky's the limit if she brings her A-game. Not a lot has gone right for this filly and while I think there’s a couple of things that are against her here, she has a lot of potential.

Doomben 10,000 Betting

The Doomben 10,000 will be a spectacle of a Group 1 sprint race held at Doomben Racecourse in sunny Queensland. In this section, we will divulge our tips for picking one of the best betting apps for you come race day.

So, picking one of the best  Australian betting sites may seem daunting, however, we will try to ease this burden and provide a few foolproof options for choosing which bookie to place your Doomben 10,000 bets with. First off, you will need to figure out what markets you wish to bet on.

This stage precedes any of the advice below. So, our first tip is to study the field of runners for the Doomben 10,000, select which horses you wish to bet on and then come back here to seek advice on which bookmakers to place these bets with.

Whichever bookie offers you the best odds! This one is simple but requires a lot of work. Visit our bookmaker reviews page for a full list of every single Australian bookmaker that offers Group 1 thoroughbred horse racing markets.

From here, visit as many bookies as you can, and compare the odds they are giving for your preferred market. Whichever bookie is giving you the best odds out of the bookmakers you have checked, this is the one you place your money with! The logic is simple, your return will be the greatest!

What Australian bookmaker do you feel comfortable with? The most common way that Aussie punters choose where to place their bets comes down to familiarity. The app or website you bet most often with is likely the one you will use and that is totally fine!

We always recommend only using bookmakers that you feel comfortable placing your money with. Our bookmaker reviews page denotes how reliable we believe each bookie to be, so check it out. We list several of the best horse racing betting sites.

Promotions and betting sites bonuses are also a very common way to choose bookies. Different bookies will offer different betting promotions, so it pays to check out what’s on offer. More specifically, some Aussie bookies are likely to offer race-specific promotions for the Doomben 10,000 so be sure to check those out too.

Ultimately, there is no one right way to select a bookmaker to use for the Doomben 10,000. Any one of the above tips is reasonable. Just make sure you are betting with a reliable bookmaker and have provided verification information before placing any bets!

Some of the bookies we like for Group 1 racing include; Volcanobet, TopSport as well as GoldenRush. These are some of the best betting apps going around, but there are plenty more fish in the sea! Check out our “Betting Sites” section above for more options.

Doomben 10,000 Field

The 2025 Doomben 10,000 field is not confirmed at this stage. While we don’t know which runners will line up in the field, if history is anything to go by, it is going to be a high-quality field with several high-profile runners making their way up to Queensland!

As well as the field, if the odds are available, we will list them in our “Odds” section below. It’s a good idea to check out the odds because it will give you an indication of which runners are more favoured in the market.

While we wait for the 2025 field to be confirmed, check out the epic field that lined up for the Doomben 10,000 in 2024:

For the 2024 Doomben 10,000, we saw just nine runners confirmed for the race and with no emergencies listed either. We didn’t see any scratchings, so the field remained at nine. It is good to see a race with no scratchings, as scratchings can happen a lot in horse racing!

It’s always important to remember that scratchings are fairly common. It doesn’t matter if the race is listed as a Group 1, scratchings can still occur. There are many reasons why a runner is scratched and it can happen at any time between when the final field is announced and the race is due to jump.

Along with scratchings, you should also keep your eye on which barrier each runner will jump from. This is another key factor to consider because the starting barrier can play a role in the race tactics used by each runner. Some runners also have a racing style that suits an inside or wider barrier as well.

Doomben 10,000 Form Guide

There is a lot of data and stats that go into the Doomben 10,000 form guide. While you may not think it’s the funnest thing going through all this data to find nuggets of gold that will point you in the direction of a potential winner, we do! We love sifting through all the key form indicators and that’s good news for you because it means you don’t have to do it.

We’ve gone through all the relevant data for the Doomben 10,000 and found some interesting patterns that we think you should be aware of before placing any bets on the race. So, if you’d prefer to bet with your head and not your heart, keep on reading below!

The lead-up races are usually the first thing we look into and for the Doomben 10,000, we usually see runners come through the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival or a local Queensland race, the Group 2 Victory Stakes.

We previously spoke about how important barriers are for the Doomben 10,000 and one of the major reasons for this is because of the tight turns at the track. Also, the bigger the field, the bigger the influence the barrier draw will have.

Since 2000, we have only seen three winners jump from the outside half of the field. For example, if there were 12 runners in the race, the outside half of the field would be barriers seven to 12. Mr Innocent (2000) is the most recent winner of the Doomben 10,000 who jumped from a double-digit barrier, but remember that the race doesn’t always attract 10+ runners.

Since 2007, we have seen six favourites go on to win the Doomben 10,000. So, we would say they have a moderate record in the race. While the favourite may not necessarily win, since 2009, we have only seen three winners jump with double-digit odds.

It seems as though it is in your best interest to avoid mares. Since 1997, we’ve only seen four mares win the Doomben 10,000 which were Hot Danish (2010), Beaded (2011), English (2018) and Bella Nipotina (2024). Sea Siren was a 3YO filly when she won the Doomben 10,000 in 2013.

Unfortunately for the locals, they seem to struggle in the Doomben 10,000. Since 2002, there have only been two locals to win the race, which were Falvelon (2022) and Spirit Of Boom (2014). Meanwhile, Sydney runners have a good record, so it could pay to check out them.

Doomben 10,000 Horses

The Doomben 10,000 has a long and rich history. It is one of the most prestigious races on the calendar and that means we see some of the best-ever racehorses compete in the race. We want to feature some of the top Doomben 10,000 horses to ever win the race and talk more about their accomplishments.

With so many epic horses, we had to make the difficult decision of cutting it down to just a handful that we will feature here. Hopefully, you think we’ve made the right choices! Check out the best Doomben 10,000 horses below:

Manikato - 1979

The 1979 Australian Horse of the Year, Manikato, also won the Doomben 10,000 in the same year. Some of the other key races he won throughout his career included; the Golden Slipper, the Blue Diamond Stakes and the William Reid Stakes. Throughout his career, he amassed over $1 million in prize money.

Takeover Target - 2007

Takeover Target had success right around the globe and ended with a career record of 41:21-6-4. He won some of the biggest races in Australia, which helped him gain over $6 million in prize money. Some of the other races he won included; the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes, the Newmarket Handicap and The Goodwood.

Apache Cat - 2008 & 2009

Apache Cat won the Doomben 10,000 in back-to-back years in 2008 and 2009. In total, the gelding won eight Group 1 races, which helped him collect almost $5 million in prize money. He had a career record of 43:19-4-7 and this included wins in races like the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes and the Australian Guineas.

Redzel - 2017

Redzel won the Doomben 10,000 in 2017, but most notably won back-to-back The Everest’s, which helped him gain over $16 million in prize money. He had a career record of 39:15-10-3 and won several Group status races.

Giga Kick - 2023

At the time of writing, Giga Kick is still racing and so far has a career record of 11:7-1-2. Like Redzel, he has also won The Everest, which has helped his total career prize money reach almost $10 million so far. In 2023, Giga Kick was also named the Australian Champion Sprinter.

Doomben 10,000 Odds

Looking for the Doomben 10,000 odds? Well, you’ve come to the right place! We will showcase all the odds for the race as soon as our favourite bookie, PlayUp, releases their horse racing markets. It is a good idea to check out odds at different bookies though because sometimes you can get a better price.

All the top horse racing betting apps will have markets up before the race. It’s also important to remember that the odds will be constantly changing, so if you see a price you like, it’s best to jump on it while you still can.

We also recommend betting when the market is listed as “Before Noms” because this means you’ll get your stake back if the horse you chose doesn’t make the final field. If you bet when the market is listed as “All-In”, then you won’t have any such luck.

The odds are all about finding value. You might think a particular runner is most likely to win, but if they are listed at odds of $1.25 for example, there’s not a lot of value there. Also remember that even though a particular runner may be very short, that doesn’t guarantee they are going to win. Anything can happen in horse racing!

Doomben 10,000 History

The history of the Doomben 10,000 dates back to 1933, the year that the Doomben Racecourse opened its doors, which also happened to be the inaugural Doomben 10,000 feature race. In 1933 however, the Doomben 10,000 was called the Doomben Newmarket Handicap. The Doomben 10,000 is one of the first races during Brisbane’s Winter Racing Carnival, which is one of the biggest horse racing carnivals of the year.

To start with, let us look at the name changes to the Doomben 10,000 over the years. As we have previously mentioned, at its inception, the Doomben 10,000 was called the Doomben Newmarket Handicap. This remained for the first 13 years of racing before the now synonymous moniker for the feature race was donned, the Doomben 10,000.

This was in response to the $10,000 on offer in prize money for the Doomben 10,000 race. The name of the feature race adopted this prize money amount, where it has remained ever since.

Besides for 12 years in the 1980s and early 1990s when the Doomben 10,000 went by the names Rothmans 100,000 (1980-1989) and Castlemaine 10,000 (1990-1992), the Doomben 10,000 has had the same name since it was changed from the Doomben Newmarket Handicap in 1946.

Now looking at the distance changes that have taken place in the Doomben 10,000 feature race since its first run, we can see that the distance has remained fairly constant. Beginning as a six-furlong (or equivalent to 1,200m) race, the Doomben 10,000 experienced years of 7-furlong races (between 1942 and 1972).

After that, it returned to its 1,200m origins in 2017, by way of 34 years of 1,350m races from 1973 to 2016. Nowadays, we have returned to the original 1200m (or six furlongs) distance where the Doomben 10,000 became so iconic.

Now to fully understand the legends of the Doomben 10,000 feature races, we need to look at a few of the records held by horses, jockeys, and trainers at the iconic race at Doomben Racecourse. When the race was run at a distance of 1,350m, the race record belongs to Falvelon who ran the 2001 Doomben 10,000 race in a time of just 1 minute 17.21 seconds!

The winningest jockey to compete in the Doomben 10,000 is the legendary George Moore, who claimed victory in the Doomben 10,000 in 1940, 1953, 1957, 1969 and 1971. The winningest trainer over the history of the Doomben 10,000 is the legendary T J Smith, he won the race in 1955, 1964, 1969, 1970, 1982 and 1985.

Now you know all the main parts of the Doomben 10,000’s history, if you want to learn more about some of the other races on the Group 1 calendar, we’ve got you covered! Just head on over to our Group One races list.
