2023 Doomben 10,000

Introduction to the 2023 Doomben 10,000

The Doomben 10,000 is a prestigious Group 1 thoroughbred horse race for horses aged three years and older, at a weight for age restriction. Having been held since 1933, the Doomben 10,000 is not one of the oldest races on the Australian Group 1 calendar, however it has since become an iconic race associated with Doomben Racecourse that is widely considered as a premier sprint race not just in Queensland but in all of Australian racing.

The 2023 Doomben 10,000 will be a spectacle for racing fans around the country who will turn their eyes to Doomben Racecourse on Saturday the 13th of May 2023 in order to witness a special race. Read below for a breakdown of what you will find in this preview to the 2023 Doomben 10,000 race.

This 2023 Doomben 10,000 preview will start by looking at the feature race itself. Given that this Doomben 10,000 race preview is being written over three weeks in advance of the actual Doomben 10,000 2023 feature race, there is yet to be a confirmed field of runners. However, the ‘The Feature Race – the 2023 Doomben 10,000’ section will break down the prize money distributions as well as the result of the 2022 Doomben 10,000 race.

After getting a proper picture of the field and likely competitors for the title of champion of the 2023 Doomben 10,000, we will look at where to place your bets for the Doomben 10,000. This is in terms of the selection of Australian bookmakers available to you that offer thoroughbred horse racing markets. We also include a list of five Australian bookmakers we are fans of that might be the right selection for you to bet with on the 2023 Doomben 10,000.

Visit the ‘How to Bet on the 2023 Doomben 10,000’ section of this 2023 Doomben 10,000 feature race preview to get some guidance on what sort of markets to look out for when placing bets on big Group 1 Australian thoroughbred horse races, not just limited to the 2023 Doomben 10,000. However, we recommend following this advice for the 2023 Doomben 10,000 too.

The 2023 Doomben 10,000 preview goes on to highlight the home of the 2023 Doomben 10,000, Doomben Racecourse. A Queensland racing icon with prestige and history associated with it, be sure to visit our Doomben Racecourse feature race page which includes a plethora of information about the venue, including its big races over the Australian racing calendar, its differentiating factors that set it apart from the other Australian turf courses, and the history that Doomben Racecourse has undergone to become what it is today.

The ’Race History of the Doomben 10,000’ is my favourite section of this Doomben 10,000 race preview, in addition to pretty much all other race pages. This is because the race history paints the picture of any given Group 1 race, not just the Doomben 10,000. We will look at the changes to distance, name, and venue, that the Doomben 10,000 has experienced over its long and illustrious history, as well as the records held by some of Australia’s greatest horses, jockeys, and trainers.

The last section of this 2023 Doomben 10,000 feature race preview is a comprehensive list of every Doomben 10,000 victor since its first jump in 1933 under the name the Doomben Newmarket Handicap. This list includes some recognisable names and great Australian champions so be sure to check it out!

The 2023 Doomben 10,000 is one of Queensland’s most prestigious sprint race and it has a prize pool to match that prestige! In the 2022 Doomben 10,000, the field of runners present at Queensland’s turf club were competing for a share of a large $1 million AUD prize to take home to its connections. However, the prize money for the 2023 Doomben 10,000 has seen a 50% increase! Now, the participants in the 2023 Doomben 10,000 will be battling it out for the biggest prize in a $1.5 million AUD prize pool!

The winner of the 2023 Doomben 10,000 will take home a cool $600,000 AUD for its owners, trainers, and jockey on the day. Even 9th and 10th place walk away with a five figure sum of $12,000 AUD!

In New South Wales, Racing New South Wales pledged upwards of $20 million AUD in prize money towards 2023 feature Group 1 races at its top venues. Although taking place in Queensland, there has been pressure placed on the other state racing bodies to increase their prize money to keep up with Racing New South Wales’s ever-increasing prize money budget (just as with the Everest becoming Australia’s richest race upon inception). This is the reason we see races like the Doomben 10,000 increasing their prize money by 50% in just one year!

Take a look below of the table of prize money distributions in order to familiarise yourself with what the 2023 Doomben 10,000 racers are competing for on Saturday the 13th of May at Doomben Racecourse.

The 2023 Doomben 10,000 field has not yet been released, and there are no futures odds offered by the major thoroughbred horse racing Australian bookmakers that are available. As a result, this 2023 Doomben 10,000 feature race preview will not include tips or a breakdown of the critical information pertaining to the field of runners vying it out at Doomben Racecourse on Saturday the 13th of May 2023.

Instead, we will take a quick look back on the 2022 Doomben 10,000 results, more specifically, the top 5 runners for the race. I will not go into depth on all of these runners; however it is always good to know who the past winners of the Doomben 10,000 are before placing your 2023 Doomben 10,000 bets so you know what to look for! If you would like to view a complete list of every champion of the Doomben 10,000 over its 90 year history, please scroll down to the bottom of this 2023 Doomben 10,000 preview to the ‘Past Winners of the Doomben 10,000’ part.

Mazu claimed victory in the 2022 Doomben 10,000, beating home the always impressive Paulele by a nose, and Entriviere by a tick over half a length. Signore Fox and Rothfire rounded out the top five runners, however they were more than 2.5 lengths back of Entriviere.

Sam Clipperton expertly guided Mazu home after a good start, ensuring that he took home his share of the $480,000 AUD won by Mazu on the day. Paul and Peter Snowden, Mazu’s trainers, are renowned in the thoroughbred horse racing business, and did a brilliant job with Mazu in preparation for the 2022 Doomben 10,000.

See below the breakdown of the top 5 runners in the 2022 Doomben 10,000. This table includes the contestants’ place, racing number, name, and the margin they finished behind Mazu, the winner of the 2022 Doomben 10,000 at Doomben Racecourse.

Where to Bet on the 2023 Doomben 10,000

The 2023 Doomben 10,000 will be a spectacle of a Group 1 sprint race held at Doomben Racecourse in sunny Queensland. Whilst this 2023 Doomben 10,000 preview does not include a table of the runners for the 2023 Doomben 10,000 feature race, we will still divulge our tips for picking the right bookmaker for you come Saturday the 13th of May 2023, when the Doomben 10,000 race will be held.

So, picking an available Australian bookmaker may seem daunting, however we will try to ease this burden and provide a few foolproof options for choosing which bookie to place your 2023 Doomben 10,000 bets with. First off, you will need to figure out what markets you wish to bet on. This stage precedes any of the advice below. So, my first tip is to study the field of runners for the 2023 Doomben 10,000, select which horses you wish to bet on, then come back here to seek advice on which bookmakers to place these bets with.

  1. Whichever bookie offers you the best odds! This one is simple but requires a lot of work. Visit out Bookmaker Reviews page for a full list of every single Australian bookmaker that offers Group 1 thoroughbred horse racing markets. From here, visit as many bookies as you can, and compare the odds they are giving for your preferred market. Whichever bookie is giving you the best odds out of the bookmakers you have checked, this is the one you place your money with! The logic is simple, your return will be the greatest!
  2. What Australian bookmaker do you feel comfortable with? The most common way that Aussie punters choose where to place their bets comes down to familiarity. The app or website you bet most often with, is likely the one you will use… and that is totally fine! I always recommend only using bookmakers that you feel comfortable placing your money with. Our Bookmaker Reviews page denotes how reliable we believe each bookie to be, so check it out.
  3. Promotions are also a very common way to choose bookies. Visit our OnlyRacing Promotions page to see what different available Australian bookmakers will offer you for depositing with them. More specifically, some Aussie bookies are likely to offer race specific promotions for the 2023 Doomben 10,000 so be sure to check those out too.

Ultimately, there is no one right way to select a bookmaker to use for the 2023 Doomben 10,000. Any one of the three above tips are reasonable. Just make sure you are betting with a reliable bookmaker and have provided verification information before placing any bets!

Below is an excerpt from our OnlyRacing Reviews page which includes five Australian bookmakers that offer markets for Group 1 thoroughbred races across Australia. All five of these bookies have their own dedicated review page, so click on their hyperlink to see comprehensive information on what these bookmakers have to offer.

Track History of Doomben Racecourse – Home to the 2023 Doomben 10,000

Located in Ascot, Queensland, Doomben Racecourse is arguably Queensland Racing’s most prestigious and well recognised thoroughbred horse racing venue. Neighbouring another historical Australian racing venue in Eagle Farm Racecourse, Doomben Racecourse has been open for business since 1933!

1933 was also the year that the Doomben 10,000, then Doomben Newmarket Handicap, had its first race. With many iconic feature races and a beautiful setting to boot, Doomben Racecourse is one of Australia’s greatest racing venues.

For more information on Doomben Racecourse, its biggest events of the year, and its track history, visit our Doomben Racecourse specialised Group 1 race page.

Race History of the Doomben 10,000

The history of the Doomben 10,000 dates back to 1933, the year that Doomben Racecourse opened its doors, which also happened to be the inaugural Doomben 10,000 feature race. In 1933 however, the Doomben 10,000 was called the Doomben Newmarket Handicap. In this section of our Doomben 10,000 race preview, we will look at all the changes that have occurred to the Doomben 10,000 feature race since its inception 90 years ago, so we can create a proper image of the prestige and history of the Doomben 10,000.

To start with, let us look at the name changes to the Doomben 10,000 over the years. As I have previously mentioned, at its inception, the Doomben 10,000 was called the Doomben Newmarket Handicap. This remained for the first 13 years of racing, before the now synonymous moniker for the feature race was donned, the Doomben 10,000. This was in response to the $10,000 Australian Pounds on offer in relation to prize money for the Doomben 10,000 races. The name of the feature race adopted this prize money amount, where it has remained ever since.

Besides for 12 years in the 1980s and early 1990s when the Doomben 10,000 went by the names Rothmans 100,000 (1980 – 1989) and Castlemaine 10,000 (1990 – 1992), the Doomben 10,000 has had the same name since it was changed from the Doomben Newmarket Handicap in 1946.

Now looking at the distance changes that have taken place in the Doomben 10,000 feature race since its first run, we can see that the distance has remained fairly constant. Beginning as a six furlong (or equivalent to 1200m) race, the Doomben 10,000 experienced years of 7 furlong races (between 1942 and 1972), before returning to its 1200m origins in 2017, by way of 34 years of 1350m races from 1973 to 2016. Nowadays, we have returned to the original 1200m (or six furlong) distance where the Doomben 10,000 became so iconic.

Now to fully understand the legends of the Doomben 10,000 feature races, we need to look at a few of the records held by horses, jockeys, and trainers at the iconic race at Doomben Racecourse.

  • Considering that the 1350m distance that the Doomben 10,000 took place at is where it has spent majority of its history (up until 2017), we will look at which horse had the fastest run at 1350m to decide who holds the records for the fastest Doomben 10,000 race. This records belongs to Falvelon who ran the 2001 Doomben 10,000 race in a time of just 1 minute 17.21 seconds!
  • The winningest jockey to compete in the Doomben 10,000 is the legendary George Moore, who claimed victory in the Doomben 10,000 in 1940, 1953, 1957, 1969, and 1971.
  • The winningest trainer over the history of the Doomben 10,000 is the also legendary T J Smith, for which one of Australia’s most iconic races is named after. He won the Doomben 10,000 in 1955, 1964, 1969, 1970, 1982, and 1985. That is six total victories in the Doomben 10,000 feature race!
