The Coast Tips, Betting, Odds, Horses & More 2025

The Coast is one of the newer races on the Australian calendar and it is one of the richest races that is held outside of metropolitan Sydney. It is a race held under handicap and is worth a cool $500,000. The Coast is another addition by Racing NSW to pull focus on more provincial racing.

Other new additions to the NSW calendar include The Gong and The Hunter. First run in 2021, The Coast is now pulling just as much attention as some of the Group One races that take place around the same time. It is a major boost for provincial racing and it will certainly only continue to grow from here.

Each year, The Coast attracts runners who decide to keep racing after The Championships has concluded. This means we see some interesting (and quality) runners take part in The Coast. There’s no question that The Coast is the biggest race that takes place at Gosford Racecourse each year, but the racecourse is still one of the top tracks in the state.

It is a great initiative by Racing NSW, which means that local trainers and jockeys get to compete for major prize money, all while showing off what Gosford Racecourse has to offer. There are a few other key races on the card during The Coast race day, which include the Gosford Cup (Listed) and the Takeover Target Stakes (Listed). 

The Coast in 2024 will take place at Newcastle Racecourse, due to the rain around the Gosford area. The entire meeting that was going to take place on Saturday has been transferred to Newcastle.

The Coast Best Bet - Iknowastar

I know a star, and his name is Iknowastar! Currently listed at odds of $5.00, it puts Iknowastar on the second line of betting. He is as consistent as you like and looks well-placed to tackle The Coast third-up. The concern for me is the heavy track he could potentially see, but he is quality and has enough to overcome that.

Looked like the winner two weeks ago only to be run down by a very smart horse, Waterford. Rachel King gets the ride and she knows what to do. Iknowastar is five wins from six starts over the mile, so I’m feeling pretty confident that he can win the race and beat the favourite here.

The Coast Next Best - Tavi Time

The current favourite comes in as my next best for The Coast on Saturday. He may be the favourite but I think Iknowastar will have his number. The distance works in his favour and he will certainly eat up the mile after putting in an eye-catching effort in the Provincial Final. The set-up works in his favour and he just oozes class.

Tavi Time has six wins from 11 starts and gets in light at the weights, with only 53kg on his back. He has got a lot going for him, that’s for sure, but will have to do a lot and put in almost a perfect run to beat the likes of Iknowastar, I feel. Let’s see what he can do come Saturday at Newcastle.

The Coast Best Roughie - Williamsburg

Williamsburg has come in as my best roughie for The Coast. Currently listed at odds of $9.50, I think there’s some decent value to be had with come. I think this is the best opportunity for Williamsburg and he has a great career so far, including placing at Group 1 level. 

The more rain the better as Williamsburg loves the heavy track. If the track gets upgraded into heavy territory, the odds for Williamsburg will continue to shorten. The mile also is within his wheelhouse. I understand that there are a couple of better runners in this race, but $9.50 just seems silly high for me!

While The Coast may be a newer race on the Australian calendar, you can still bet on the race and the process is exactly the same as any other Group 1 race. There are a couple of recommendations we have when it comes to The Coast betting. Even if you’re a more experienced punter, it can’t hurt to brush up on the basics every now and again!

You’ll notice that there are heaps of different markets available on a wide range of betting apps. One of our top recommendations is to bet on a few of these markets. Yes, it is important to stick with what you know, but you can also do some exploring and beef up your knowledge of different bet types.

Having some variety and mixing things up can be a fun way to find your new favourite bet type! Some of the most common bet types include Win or Place Bet, Quaddie, Quinella, Trifecta and First Four. If you don’t know what each of these bet types involves, you must do some research before placing any bets.

Understanding what you are going to bet on is one thing, but there’s something else you need to sort out as well, which is who you are going to bet with. The Coast field will be announced each year during race week. We will bring you all the field information you’ve been looking for as soon as we can! We aren’t able to provide details on which runners will take part in The Coast in 2025 at this stage. While we don’t know which runners will take part, we do know it’s going to be filled with quality!

Along with the field, we will also provide The Coast odds in our “Odds” section below. It’s a good idea to look at the odds, if they are available because you’ll see which runners are more favoured in the market currently. You could even place a bet if you’ve got a hot tip!

We didn’t see a capacity field for The Coast in 2024, but it was still stacked with quality provincial runners. A total of 12 runners were confirmed for the race, with no emergencies. In the end, we saw two scratchings in the race, which dropped the final field to just 10 runners. The two runners that were scratched included; Kind Words and Overriding.

You may not know a lot about scratchings, but it is important to understand that they are fairly common in horse racing. A scratching is where a horse is pulled from the final field and this can be for a couple of reasons. It can also happen at any time between when the final field is announced and the time the race starts.

Another thing that is vital to look at when studying the final field is the barrier draw. While there isn’t a lot of history in The Coast and therefore there aren’t a lot of barrier stats, the barrier each runner jumps from can have a fairly significant influence on race tactics deployed and potentially even the race result.

Before placing any bets on The Coast, you should check out the form guide. The Coast form guide will provide you with information and data that will hopefully point you in the direction of the winner. While The Coast is a relatively new race, there isn’t a lot of data to go through, but the team at OnlyRacing have done what they can to provide some guidance.

This means that you don’t have to do any of the work! We’ve gone through all the important details and have found a couple of nuggets of gold for you. These key form indicators are an important piece of the puzzle when it comes to picking a winner for The Coast. So, check out all the form indicators below!

Things you should look into are the barriers and the expected race tempo. Gosford Racecourse is a bit tricky with a tight turn, so barriers can come into play in a major way. The speed map is important due to the track layout and the short straight home.

Look for runners that are proven under handicap conditions. Also, remember that the weight a runner has to carry on their back can play a major role. So, if you like the look of two runners and one is carrying significantly less weight, that particular runner may be the better bet.

We usually see a variety of form lines that need to be looked into as horses will likely be competing in a range of lead-up races before The Coast. Your best starting point would be to look into races like the Hawkesbury Guineas and the Hawkesbury Crown, as well as the All Aged Stakes, which is a Group 1 race that takes place during Day Two of The Championships at Randwick Racecourse.

Looking into the data of the winners specifically now:

• In 2021, Brandenburg ($8.50) won The Coast as a 4YO who came from the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. He jumped from barrier 12 and carried 58.6kg.
• In 2022, Rustic Steel ($7.50) won The Coast as a 4YO who came from the Provincial-Midway Championships Final. He jumped from barrier six and carried 52kg.
• In 2023, Palmetto ($6.00) won The Coast as a 4YO who came from a win at Hawkesbury. He jumped from barrier 10 and carried 53.5kg. 
• In 2024, Magnaspin ($18) won The Coast as a 4YO who previously came sixth in a set weights and penalties race in Caulfield. He jumped from barrier 7 and carried 54kg. (Note: This race took place at Newcastle and not Gosford).

As The Coast is a new race on the Australian calendar, we don’t have to make any tough decisions on which horses to feature in this section, we can feature all of them! The Coast was designed to shine a spotlight on horses that we may not necessarily see at metropolitan races. 

So, check out all The Coast horses that have gone on to win the race. We will go through each horse in this section and provide more details on what each winner has accomplished in their career. Take a look at all The Coast horses below: 

Brandenburg - 2021 

Brandenburg won the first-ever edition of The Coast. Throughout his career, Brandenburg placed on three occasions in a Group 1 race, including the Doomben Cup, the Doncaster Mile and the Randwick Guineas. While he only won three races throughout his career, all those placings helped him gain a total of $1,253,600 in prize money.

Rustic Steel - 2022

Rustic Steel proved too good for his competitors in The Coast in 2022. The gelding is a Group 3 winner but is yet to contest a Group 1. The Group 3 that Rustic Steel won was the Newcastle Stakes and so far throughout his career, he has won a total of almost $2 million in prize money.

Palmetto - 2023

So far, The Coast winner in 2023, Palmetto, is unplaced at Group 1 level after two attempts. He is also unplaced at Group 2 level after two attempts and has won second place in a Group 3. Palmetto has a career record of 27: 6-1-3 so far and has gained over $1 million in prize money.

Magnaspin - 2024

It was a bit of an upset in The Coast in 2024 as Magnaspin won after jumping with odds of $18. So far throughout his career, Magnaspin hasn’t contested at Group level, but he has placed in the one Listed race he has contested. His career record at the time of writing sits at 21: 5-4-4 and he has over $700K in prize money.

Almost every Aussie bookie will release The Coast odds well before the race. This means you’ll have the ability to get your bets on for the race sooner than you think. When it comes to The Coast odds, the shorter the price, the more chance the bookie thinks that outcome will eventuate.

For example, if a certain runner is listed at odds of $1.45, that runner is the favourite in the race and therefore more likely to win. However, you probably already know that anything can happen in horse racing and nothing is 100% certain. You may also notice that different horse racing betting apps have different odds for the same runner or market.

Each bookie has slightly different factors that influence the odds that they put up for each runner and market. Sometimes the difference can be only minor, but on occasion you can find a fairly major difference, meaning you could be leaving a lot of value on the table if you don’t check the horse racing markets with different bookies.

As soon as you’ve got your hot tip for The Coast, we recommend you get your bets on, as long as the market is available. At this stage, PlayUp hasn’t released their market for The Coast, so you’ll have to hold off for a little longer.

The Coast is one of the newest races on the Australian calendar and therefore doesn’t have a long history. Racing NSW introduced The Coast, among several other races, to allow for more focus to be placed on country/ provincial racing. This allows for racetracks, horses, jockeys and trainers that don’t usually get attention to share in the spotlight. 

This introduction from Racing NSW has been very successful and even though The Coast has only been around for a few years, we believe the race is here to stay! The first running of The Coast was won by Brandenburg and it is one of the richest races to be held outside of Sydney.

The Coast is held on the same day as The Goodwood, which is a Group 1 that takes place in South Australia each year. This means there is a smorgasbord of horse racing taking place on the same day for fans. The Goodwood wraps up the Autumn Racing Carnival in South Australia, which is one of the biggest horse racing carnivals in the state each year.

As the years go by, there will be more history to digest about The Coast. We will keep updating this section as things happen in the race, so you are always up to date with all the important history-related information about this new race.

So, who won The Coast in 2025? Well, we don’t actually know that because the race hasn’t been run yet. While we don’t know what went down in 2025, we do know all the juicy details from The Coast in 2024! We have all the important details like the finishing order of the entire field and the race replay.

The Coast was taken out by $18 roughie Magnaspin. Magnaspin relished the Heavy 9 track and finished just 0.2L in front of Williamsburg, who also loves a wet track. Magnaspin was placed perfectly in the race, sitting in second for the majority of it and had enough in the track to get the job done.

In third place was Iknowastar, who couldn’t hold onto first place, where the gelding was running for the majority of the race. Iknowastar finished 0.9L off the leader. In the end, there was a total of 14.3L that split the entire field and the race was run in a time of 1:38.42.
