BEST BET - #4 - Nunthorpe - (BEST BET)
Nunthorpe rates on top here, making her second appearance at the races after picking up a soft win at similar odds over the 1200m at Cranbourne. I was on that run where she prevailed super late in the piece and definitely looks like she wants longer. Moody knows what hes doing with the young horses and fitter and up in trip with no harder a field really looks good.

THE DANGER - #3 - Pyrois
Pyrois gets the gun draw and comes into this hard fit, picking up a win in maiden grade at Newcastle 3 runs back and then had a 7 week let up before coming to this track when 4th of 10 and not running badly but really screaming for longer. Gets that here and I expect him to be motoring home late

VALUE BET  - #5 - Thesecondatportsea 
I think that you can’t really overlook any of these in such a small field and Thesecondatportsea really hasn’t done anything wrong this prep. Last prep picked up a win and a second placing before being sent for a 22 week spell, resumed at this track and trip and stuck to the task, coming 2nd there. Admittedly, they ran slow that day but will be fitter now and finds a smaller field as well as being better for the experience of the run. Gets in light and Daniel Moor is on.

BEST BET - #6 - Hard Squeeze - (NEXT BEST)
Hard Squeeze’s last run out was great, running over the 1800m here on Boxing day when beaten just over a length by the smart Chandon Burj. She was given absolutely zero favours there when settling last and having to get out after the turn, then storming home late. She goes into this with 3rd up fitness, gets up in trip and is proven at this distance and I think she takes this out. I’ll make her my next best bet.

THE DANGER - #2 - Fire Glo Too
Fire Glo Too does look dangerous in this field, has been racing in better company than this and has 2 placings in 3 runs, all at this trip and both placings were at this track. He takes on a little bit more weight now, rating a bit on top of these and draws wide but in a staying race this shouldn’t matter too much. I am interested to see what they can produce on race day, yet apprehensive to have money on.

VALUE BET - #7 - Maid Of Iron
I am not convinced that Maid of Iron is not a good horse. I think that has been getting incredibly unlucky with a bunch of softer / wetter tracks and getting luckless in running. However, a good horse will make its own luck as well and I am unsure about her but steps up in trip here, is fitter and better for the runs this prep, gets Kah on and doesn’t take on too much weight. Perhaps the Maher and Eustace stable has her ready for this now.

BEST BET - #2 - Defining
Defining looks a bit better than these. Last campaign picked up back to back wins before placing at Morphettville and then being sent to the paddock. She took a half year break and then resumed at Ballarat when 3rd, racing well despite blundering in the straight and having a couple other hiccups. The stable obviously wasn’t fully content with that, sending her back to the yard and she now returns from that let up, draws to do no work and I think that the McEvoy’s will have her ready to win this come race day.

THE DANGER - #7 - Colorado Cruz 
Colorado Cruz has been running well this campaign, coming 2nd two runs in a row when quite short in the market both times before leading all the way and winning at Colac when an odds on favourite last time out over this distance. He jumps up sharply in competition now but gets in light and gets Moor on, I think he can run a cheeky race.

VALUE BET - #8 - Girl - (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
I think Girl is being overlooked in the market. She was outclassed in a BM70 mixed race at this track last time out but now drops back to Fillies and to BM64 in a midweek field and I think that she looks well suited to take this out. She’s had a month between runs and gets Allen back on board who her sole win this prep was picked up under. She maps to get a soft run on/just behind the speed from barrier 2 and I think if she has a little bit in hand in the last sprint she takes this out.

Jamie Kah goes on top for me at Sandown Lakeside tomorrow, one of the best jockeys in the country and one of the top 5 at Sandown, she gets a solid booking of rides and I have already tipped a couple of her runners. I have outlined all her races for tomorrow’s meeting below:

I have chosen to try to pick up the trifecta in race 4 as the top three horses all rate a fair bit on top of the rest of the field and I think that we can use this to our advantage, keeping combinations small and throwing in a few big odds runners who map to potentially get into the placings.
