Other than the George Ryder Stakes and the Golden Slipper, there are also the Ranvet Stakes, The Galaxy and the Rosehill Guineas, all run at Rosehill Racecourse. The William Reid Stakes is also run on the same day at Moonee Valley Racecourse. So, in total there are six Group 1s on the same day!

With so many Group 1s taking place at Rosehill Racecourse, there’s no doubt that it is one of the top tracks in the country. When it comes to the George Ryder Stakes, it is the perfect lead-up race to the Doncaster Mile and the winner is exempt from the ballot. There is a total of $4 million up for grabs in the Doncaster Mile.

George Ryder Stakes Best Bet - Veight

It’s a fairly open market in the 2024 George Ryder Stakes, but I’ve decided to put Veight on top. He has had a great Autumn so far, so I’m hoping he can top it off with a Group 1 win here. His first run back in January in the Australia Stakes was in excellent style.

He has just seemed to keep getting better and he went with the likes of Mr Brightside and Pride Of Jenni in the CF Orr Stakes. Then, last time out, he put in a great second-place effort in the Australian Guineas. He is as fit as they come and presents some good value, currently listed at $6.50 for the win.

George Ryder Stakes Next Best - Think About It

The favourite and for good reason too. Think About It should be finishing right up there (hopefully in second place behind Veight!). He comes into this race fitter after a poor showing in the Canterbury Stakes, by his standards. I rate him highly for the George Ryder Stakes. 

Think About It will be tackling the 1,500m distance for the first time, but I think he is up for it. Even if Think About It doesn’t get even luck, I think he is still in with a good chance. Several top competitors in this race will give him a run for his money though.

George Ryder Stakes Best Roughie - Lady Laguna

Don’t want to overlook Lady Laguna again, so I’m putting her as my best roughie for the George Ryder Stakes. She surprised many (including myself) when she won the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes two weeks ago over Think About It, who lines up here again.

She’s got one of the most powerful finishes in the game and many runners would give anything just to have half the turn of foot she has. She can play with the big boys and is currently listed at $10, I’m putting something on her each-way.

In 2024, we saw a jam-packed field of 19 runners line up to tackle the George Ryder Stakes. There aren’t any emergencies listed for this race and we saw one pre-race scratching, which was Williamsburg.

You’ll find that scratchings are fairly common in horse racing. Even in major Group 1s, scratchings occur and there are many reasons for this. Scratchings can also happen at any time from when the final field is announced until just before the race start time.

Scratchings can have a major impact on the race, but something else you should look into is the barrier draw. In horse racing, each runner starts from a different barrier and some barriers are more successful than others. The starting barrier can also impact the race tactics used by each runner.

Barriers are also something to investigate as winners usually start from a single-digit barrier. In the past 17 years, only two winners have started from barrier 10 or above. In 2015, Real Impact won from barrier 12 and in 2023, Anamoe won from barrier 11.

Favourites don’t usually have a good record on the George Ryder Stakes, again excluding Winx (who was so good she could buck all the trends). In 2023, the heavy favourite Anamoe, won the George Ryder Stakes. For this race, it does pay to look for value.

The George Ryder Stakes has seen some of the best horses ever competing in the race. These horses have won the George Ryder Stakes but have also gone on to accomplish so much in horse racing.

Baguette - 1971

Baguette won the George Ryder Stakes in 1971 and as a 2YO he was one of the best going around. In fact, he was undefeated as a 2YO and he became the first-ever winner of the Two-Year-Old Triple Crown. Some of the other key races Baguette claimed throughout his career included; the Golden Slipper, the Champagne Stakes, the Sires Produce Stakes and the Newmarket Handicap.

Manikato - 1979 & 1980

Manikato was just the second Australian horse to win $1 million in prize money, after Kingston Town. Like Kingston Town, Manikato has a Group 1 race named after him, the Manikato Stakes. He ended his career with a record of 47:29-8-5, which included wins in races like the Blue Diamond Stakes, the Golden Slipper, the William Reid Stakes and the Futurity Stakes.

Emancipation - 1983 & 1984

Emancipation won the George Ryder Stakes in back-to-back years, in 1983 and 1984. The filly was also named the Australian Champion Racehorse of the Year in 1984 and has a Group 1 race named after her, the Emancipation Stakes. Some of the other key Group 1 races she won included; the Canterbury Stakes and the All Aged Stakes.

Schillaci - 1993

An eight-time Group 1 winner, Schillaci won the George Ryder Stakes in 1993. He ended his career with a cool $2,319,128 in his pocket thanks to a record of 36:16-5-5. Some of the other Group 1 races he won throughout his career included; the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes, the Newmarket Handicap and the Oakleigh Plate.

Lonhro - 2003 & 2004

Lonhro was another multiple winner of the George Ryder Stakes after winning the race in back-to-back years in 2003 and 2004. Also known as “The Black Flash”, Lonhro won 11 Group 1 races throughout his career. He amassed almost $6 million in prize money and his biggest win was probably the 2003 Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Winx - 2016-2019

You really didn’t think we were going to leave Winx off this list, now did you! What can we say about Winx that hasn’t already been said? She was a once-in-a-generation horse who captured the hearts of many, including some who didn’t have any interest in horse racing previously. She won over $26 million in prize money and won some of the biggest races on the calendar on multiple occasions, like the Cox Plate, the Doncaster Mile and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

The George Ryder Stakes odds are a key piece of the puzzle. Have you found a runner with some value? Value is usually the name of the name when it comes to odds and sometimes the favourite will just be too short to back.

It’s time to take a deep dive into the George Ryder Stakes history and boy, there’s a lot to look into! The first George Ryder took place all the way back in 1903, which makes it one of the oldest races on the Australian racing calendar. The first edition of the George Ryder Stakes was won by Marvel Loch.

The George Ryder Stakes takes place during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. This is known as one of the biggest horse racing carnivals on the calendar thanks to other key races like the Golden Slipper, the Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Doncaster Mile also taking place during Autumn.

The race is currently listed as a weight-for-age event but this wasn’t always the case. Originally listed as a handicap, it was also contested over 1,300m, not the current 1,500m we know it today. In 1915, the race distance was extended to 1,400m and then in 1979, the distance was extended again to 1,500m.

The George Ryder Stakes gained Group 1 status back in 1980 and when the race was first run, it was known as the Railway Stakes. In 1974, the name of the race was changed to the name we know it today to honour well-known racing personality, George Ryder.

The George Ryder Stakes was taken out by Veight in 2024. Before winning the George Ryder Stakes, Veight finished second in the Group 1 Australian Guineas, so you know the colt was in good form! It was a close finish though, with second-placed Lady Laguna just 0.2L behind.

Filling in the final placing was Militarize, a total of 1.1L off the pace. The pre-race favourite Think About It finished in fifth place. In total, there were 10L that separated first and last place in the George Ryder Stakes and the race was run in a time of 1:28.09.
