About the J J Atkins
The J J Atkins is one of the biggest Group One races on the calendar and one of the longest-running races. We see some of the best 2YOs each year take part in the race at Eagle Farm Racecourse. Along with the J J Atkins, we also see the Stradbroke Handicap and The Q22 take place on the same day at the same track.
During this time of the year, the spotlight is firmly on Eagle Farm Racecourse, one of the top tracks in the country, as there are several Group 1s. There are four weeks of Group 1 racing at Eagle Farm throughout June and it forms part of Brisbane’s Winter Racing Carnival.
The J J Atkins was first run in 1893 and won by Common. There have been many changes to the race over the years and we will get into the nitty-gritty of all the important changes on this page in our “History” section.
We don’t usually see 2YOs race at the 1,600m distance we see in the J J Atkins, as there is just one other similar race, which is the Champagne Stakes. Three races on the calendar offer a ballot exemption for the J J Akins, which includes New Zealand's Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes, the Spirit Of Boom Classic and the BRC Sires' Produce Stakes.
Along with the history of the race, the team at OnlyRacing.com.au covers other important aspects of the race. Some of the aspects that you might be interested in learning more about include; tips, betting, odds, field, form guide, results and so much more! You should ensure you check back here during race week for all the most up-to-date information going around.
We’ve got our tips section coming up next, but before you check out those details, we’ve put together a table that shows the breakdown of prize money on offer for the J J Atkins. Check out how much each of the top finishers takes home below:

J J Atkins Best Bet - Broadsiding
Broadsiding is listed as the short-priced favourite at $1.65. Sure, there isn’t a lot of value to be found with Broadsiding, but I think he is the standout pick. We saw consistent improvement in his first three rides until he managed to break his maiden. He then backed it up with a Group 1 win in the Champagne Stakes.
Two weeks ago he arrived in Brisbane to tackle the Sires’ Produce (Group 2) and won. I’m expecting he’ll be fitter for that run under his belt and he should continue to get better. JMac books the ride and barrier two is perfect. He should be winning this and winning it well.
J J Atkins Next Best - Mr Artemisia
I’ve got Mr Artemisia as my next best for the J J Atkins. Now, I’m not sure if he can beat Broadsiding, but he very well could give him a run for his money. It would be Chris Waller’s fourth J J Atkins if Mr Artemisia can win. Waller also has Imperialist in the race, but I think Mr Artemisia is the better of the two.
Mr Artemisia should love the distance and he is the son of The Autumn Sun, which was Waller’s most recent J J Atkins winner. So, wouldn’t that put a nice little bow on everything! Mr Artemisia is currently on the third line of betting, with odds of $7.50 at the time of writing. I think he’ll be able to run top three, especially given the ideal barrier (three).
J J Atkins Best Roughie - El Morzillo
Finding the best roughie for the J J Atkins on Saturday was somewhat of an easy task for me! As soon as I saw El Morzillo, I knew I was sold. El Morzillo is currently listed at odds of $21 with PlayUp. He finished 3.7L off Broadsiding in his previous race. Broadsiding is currently the $1.65 heavy favourite.
What the stats don’t show from that race is he was forced into a terrible part of the deck just when he was starting to get going. I think it’s time for redemption! Craig Williams sticks with El Morzillo, so that’s another big tick. Draws barrier seven in the J J Atkins, which should hopefully give him some options in the closing stages. Expecting a sharp improvement.

For the J J Atkins in 2024, we saw a medium-sized field line up. The field consists of 14 runners and no emergencies have been announced. This means that if there are any pre-race scratchings, the size of the field will be reduced. In the end, we saw just one pre-race scratching, with Zouna being withdrawn.
Scratchings do happen a lot in horse racing and it can be annoying if the horse you back ends up getting scratched from the race. Scratchings can happen for several different reasons, for example, if a runner has been duel accepted in two different races or if the runner isn’t fit and healthy.
While it is important to look at scratchings, something else you should consider when checking out the final field is the barrier draw. Different tracks have different layouts and this could play into how successful each barrier is. But at the end of the day, the barrier a runner jumps from can have a major impact on how the race plays out, no matter the track.
J J Atkins Form Guide
We like to bet with our heads here at OnlyRacing and this means combing through a lot of data and stats. We do this so you don’t have to! Going through the J J Atkins form guide can help point you in the direction of a winner. Over time, patterns emerge and with a race that’s been around for as long as the J J Atkins has, there are many patterns.
We’ve put together this section, which includes key form indicators that can help you when placing your bets. So, it’s important that you check out all the information before you put any of your hard-earned cash down. Take a look below at what we’ve found!
We don’t see many 2YO races at the distance of 1,600m, so it can be a little difficult to line up the form, this is because juvenile horses are more suited for shorter trips. Along with this, the J J Atkins is late in the racing season, so it can present some additional challenges as the horse may still be a 2YO, but could have more experience under their belts.
With all this racing under a 2YOs belt, this means you have some previous data for each horse to look into. This is compared to the beginning of the season, when it’s just exposed form you are going off!
The two lead-up races that are worth looking into include the BRC Sires' Produce Stakes (Group 2) which is run at Eagle Farm over a distance of 1,400 metres, two weeks before the J J Atkins. Along with The Phoenix (Listed) which is over a distance of 1,600 metres is usually run one week before the J J Atkins.
When it comes to the BRC Sires' Produce Stakes specifically, we have seen nine runners complete the double since 1992. Most recently was Broadsiding in 2024 when the colt won both the BRC Sires' Produce Stakes and the J J Atkins.
Fillies don’t really have the best record in the J J Atkins. In the last 23 years, we’ve only seen five fillies win the race. Interstate runners have a good record though. Since 2011, there have been 10 interstate runners that have gone on to win the J J Atkins.
When looking into how the favourite performs in the J J Atkins, they have a fairly strong record. Since 2010, we’ve seen eight favourites win the race, the most recent of which was Broadsiding in 2024, who jumped with odds of $1.60.
J J Atkins Horses
There have been plenty of J J Atkins horses over the years. We’ve seen a lot of the winners go on to have very successful careers. This section is dedicated to some of the best every J J Atkins horse that has competed and gone on to win the race throughout its history.
Now, with a race that’s been around for as long as the J J Atkins has, there are plenty of horses to pick from. But we’ve narrowed it down to just a handful to feature in this section and we hope you agree with our choices! Check out the top J J Atkins horses below:
Luskin Star - 1977
Not only did Luskin Star win the 1997 J J Atkins, but he also won the Australian 2YO Triple Crown. The stallion finished his career with an impressive record of 17:13- 3-0 and this included wins in races like the Golden Slipper, the Inglis Sires Produce Stakes, The Galaxy along with the Caulfield Guineas.
Mahogany - 1993
With almost $4 million in prize money, Mahogany won 19 races throughout his career. He was named the 1993/94 Australian Champion Three Year Old and Australian Horse of the Year. Some of his biggest wins included; the Victoria Derby, the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes and the Australian Guineas.
Freemason - 1999
While Freemason only won seven races in 62 attempts throughout his career, he did amass over $3 million in prize money. Some of the biggest races Freemason won throughout his career included; the TJ Smith Stakes, the Queensland Derby and the Tancred Stakes.
The Autumn Sun - 2018
The Autumn Sun won five Group 1 races throughout his career, including the 2018 J J Atkins. In 2018/19, he was named the Australian Champion 3YO Colt/ Gelding and throughout his career, he pocketed a total of $3,548,371 in prize money. The Autumn Sun won races like the Randwick Guineas, the Rosehill Guineas, the Golden Rose Stakes and the Caulfield Guineas.
J J Atkins Odds
The J J Atkins odds are certainly one of the most important pieces of the puzzle. Every man and their dog may be tipping a particular horse for the race, but if the odds are something like $1.20, is there any real value there? In some situations, you are better off looking at different horse racing markets, to try and find some value.
As we get closer to J J Atkins race week, you’ll notice that more markets will be released, so no matter what you’re looking to bet on, you can do so. PlayUp will release heaps of markets for the race, but as of right now, they haven’t released their Fixed Win/ Place market for the J J Atkins just yet.
It pays to look around at several different horse racing betting apps, just in case there are different odds for the same runner. This happens more than you may think, so you could be leaving some extra value on the table by not shopping around.
The best time to bet on the J J Atkins is when the market is listed as “Before Noms”. This is our recommendation because if your chosen runner doesn’t make their way into the final field, you’ll get your stake back. As well as this, you’ll notice that the odds are generally higher in this stage compared to if you’re betting when the market is “All-In” and it’s the day of the race.

J J Atkins History
The J J Atkins has a long and rich history. It has been on the Australian racing calendar for a significant amount of time now and it is known as one of Queensland’s premier races. The race forms part of Brisbane’s Winter Racing Carnival, which is known by many as one of the best horse racing carnivals on the calendar.
The race was first run under the name of Claret Stakes from 1893 up until 1975. After that, in 1976, the race name changed to Marlboro Stakes for sponsorship reasons. Then, we saw another name change, to the Castlemaine Stakes in 1983. The J J Atkins was then known as the Channel Nine Stakes in 1988, the Castlemaine Stakes once again in 1989 and then the QTC Classic in 1995.
From 1999 the race underwent another change and was known as The TJ Smith before being changed in 2013 to the name we know and love today, the J J Atkins. The name change was to honour Queensland horse trainer, Jim Atkins.
Along with several name changes, the J J Atkins has also seen a couple of changes to the distance of the race. The race was run over 1,200m originally before being moved to a distance of 1,400m in 1905 and then at the current distance of 1,600m since 1955. The race record for the J J Atkins belongs to Just A Printer, who ran the race in a time of 1:33.0 in 1994.
The J J Atkins is just one race that makes up a rich tapestry of races on the Australian calendar.
