About the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas

The Magic Millions 3YO Guineas is one of the biggest races to take place each year at Gold Coast Racecourse, which is known as one of the top tracks in the country. Along with the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas, there is the Magic Millions 2YO Classic, which is another major race during the Magic Millions Carnival.

While the status of the race is Restricted Listed (meaning it is not technically a Group 1 race) the sheer amount of prize money on the line means we always see the highest quality horses compete. There is a cool $3 million worth of prize money available and we will provide a breakdown of that in this section.

Magic Millions is an auction house and one of the biggest in Australia. They are the leading source of champion racehorses in Australia and each year we see over 5,000 horses being sold at the Magic Millions auction.

The auctions feature a range of stock including yearlings, breeding stock and more experienced racecourse. There are 20 different auctions every year and they host several carnivals and race days throughout the year, with their major event being the Magic Millions Carnival in January.

The race doesn’t have as long of a history as some of the other major races on the Australian calendar, with the first race being held back in 2001 and at that time was worth $820,000. The inaugural race was won by Paradiddle.

To compete in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas, racehorses must meet certain eligibility requirements. To be eligible for the race, racehorses must have been sold (or passed in) at any Magic Millions sale. All horses that haven’t gone through a Magic Millions auction aren’t eligible to take part in this race.

The team at OnlyRacing have every aspect of the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas covered. From horse racing betting to tips and odds details and general information like results, form guide and field, we are your go-to destination. For the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas, there’s a mammoth $3 million worth of prize money on the line. The winner doesn’t take home all that cash though, it is split between the top finishers. The breakdown is as follows:

4th$135,000

Magic Millions 3YO Guineas Best Bet - Cifrado

I think Cifrado has been underrated for most of his career and again, he is going around with odds of $7.00, so still a little overlooked for this one. He has recently scored back-to-back Group 2 wins and finished well enough in the JJ Atkins. He has also defeated Chrysaor, who is the current favourite in this one.

Cifrado has been building nicely and I really like him for this one. His one and only miss came second-up when taking on older horses, so I’m putting a line through that one. He has some of his best form coming into this one and has some options from barrier seven. I think he can win this.

Magic Millions 3YO Guineas Next Bet - Sydney Bowler

Yes, it is a big rise in class, but I just can’t ignore what he has done so far in his career. Sydney Bowler comes into the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas unbeaten. He has always shown a lot of promise, but now he is showing everyone exactly what he is made of. I have been watching him for a while and the current price of $6.50 is value.

Sydney Bowler’s win on debut was dominant, then he went on to win at BM64 and then BM72 level at Randwick. He will need some luck though, not liking the wide barrier he has drawn, but if we are looking at skills, he has what it takes to win this, in what seems like a fairly open race.

Magic Millions 3YO Guineas Best Roughie - Veecee

With a lot of genuine contenders, it means there’s some value to be found. I’ve landed on Veecee as my best roughie for the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas, who is currently paying $13 to take the win. I think Veecee will be looking to peak on race day and he has the prep to prove it.

His recent runs have been eye-catching and he gets the services of Michael Dee, who has an excellent strike rate for trainers Maher and Eustace. The step up to 1,400m looks great and gets a decent enough barrier which very well may come in as scratchings/ emergencies are taken out.

Don’t forget to come back here during race week for our updated Magic Millions 3YO Guineas tips.

Magic Millions 3YO Guineas Betting

If you plan to bet on any horse race, including the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas, there are two main things you’ll need to figure out. Firstly, think about where you wish to place your bets. Secondly, think about what market you want to place your bets on.

There is no shortage of Australian betting sites, so the decision can actually be difficult due to all the options. The good news is that you don’t have to choose just one either. We recommend opening accounts with multiple bookies because this means you can take advantage of better odds, different racing promotions and more.

You shouldn’t shy away from new betting sites either, they can offer a different experience with a greater focus on customer service and they usually have some of the best betting apps going around as well. Having a high-quality betting app is important especially if you are betting on the go a lot.

Along with figuring out who you want to bet with, you also have to decide what you are going to bet on. There are plenty of markets available, some of which include:

  • Quaddies
  • Trebles
  • Daily Doubles
  • Exactas
  • Quinellas
  • Trifectas
  • First Fours
  • Fixed Win Bets
  • Fixed Place Bets
  • Each-Way Bets
  • Multi Bets

A massive field was announced for the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas, with a total of 18 runners confirmed with five emergencies. Before the race, we saw two scratchings of Sydney Bowler and Deep Respect. These scratchings happened too close to the race start, so the field was reduced to 16.

Scratchings happen all the time in horse racing, so it’s important to keep an eye on things, especially if you have a bet on the race. They can happen at any time from when the final field is confirmed up until the race is just seconds out from the jump.

Along with scratchings, you should also keep your eye on the barrier draw. The bigger the field, the more influence the barrier draw usually has on the race. Each runner has their own race style and this will dictate whether they prefer an inside or wider barrier.

Magic Millions 3YO Guineas Form Guide

When betting on the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas, it is a good idea to check out the form guide before finalising any bets. The Magic Millions 3YO Guineas form guide is important to check out because it can provide useful statistics and even point you in the direction of the next potential winner.

If you can think of nothing worse than putting together a form guide, then you have come to the right place. The team at OnlyRacing have done all the heavy lifting for you. We have gone through and found some of the key form indicators that are important to know if you’re going to place a bet on the race.

First things first, look at some of the key lead-up races and how runners have performed in them. One race in particular that you should look into is the Vo Rogue Plate, which is a Group 3 run on the same track over a distance of 1,300m. Recently, we have seen Boomsara (2019) and Pierata (2018) win the Vo Rogue Plate and then this one.

Look for runners who have come from either Melbourne or Sydney, as they seem to have a dominant record. As well as this, fillies have seen some success in the race recently, including Abounding (2024), Flying Jess (2017) and Sweet Idea (2014). Overall though, it is the colts that have a better record.

Runners who have previous success at Group level are important to consider as well, especially if their win/s have come under set weights conditions. Those who have had success over a similar distance need to be considered as well.

Favourites don’t necessarily have the best record in this race, so it can pay to look at other runners in the field. You should also check out the previous edition of the Magic Millions 2YO Classic, as some might come from that race to tackle this one the following year.

Magic Millions 3YO Guineas Horses

here is certainly no shortage of high-quality horses that compete in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas each year. However, only the best of the best can go on to win this race. Over the years, there have been so many amazing winners of this race.

This has made our task of picking the handful of Magic Millions 3YO Guineas horses to feature in this section just that little bit harder. We have gone through all the winners and have found a few that deserve a spot on this list. Check out the horses we’ve picked here:

Ha Ha - 2002

The 2002 winner of the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas Ha Ha still holds the record for the race. The Gai Waterhouse-trained runner amassed almost $3 million in prize money throughout her career and managed to win on eight occasions (out of 25 race starts).

Gold Edition - 2007

Gold Edition was a top-notch racehorse winning the 2007 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas. The mare finished her career with over $3 million in prize money. She won several key races throughout her career, including the Manikato Stakes.

Sweet Idea - 2014

Another Gai Waterhouse-trained mare to be included on this list! Sweet Idea won the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas in 2014 and with over $2 million in prize money, it’s easy to see why she is featured here. She finished her career with a record of 19:8-7-1 and won races like The Galaxy, the Light Fingers Stakes and the Silver Slipper.

Mahuta - 2016

The 2016 winner of the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas, Mahuta won almost $2 million worth of prize money throughout his career. He finished with a record of 16: 6-1-2 and this included a third place in the Memsie Stakes. He is also a multiple Group 2 winner.

Pierata - 2018

One of the best racehorses to win the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas recently, it took Pierata several attempts in Group One races, but he finally broke through and won the All Aged Stakes in 2019. He finished his career with a record of 26:9-7-2 and amassed almost $6 million in prize money.

Magic Millions 3YO Guineas Odds

In terms of betting on the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas, the odds form a critical part. The Magic Millions 3YO Guineas odds will tell you which runners are more favoured in the market. However, it is important to remember that the odds change quickly from day to day.

A runner might be the favourite when you check one day, then when you next check it could be a completely different story. This is why we recommend getting your bets sorted as soon as you see a price you like for the runner you have your eye on.

As we get closer to race day more horse racing markets will open up. So, if you’re into the more exotic type of bets, then you should wait until race week when all the markets are available. Basic Fixed Win/ Place markets will be available well out from the event.

If you do want to place a Fixed Win/ Place bet, then we recommend betting when the market is listed as “Before Noms”. This is because you’ll get your stake back if the horse you chose doesn’t make the final field. You won’t get your stake returned if you bet when the market is listed as “All-In”.

We will showcase all the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas odds from PlayUp as soon as their market is up and running.

The company is now owned by horse breeder Gerry Harvey and his wife Katie Page as they bought out other partners in 2011. There is over $10 million in prize money during the Magic Millions race day, so it doesn’t isn’t short on cash!

In 2002, in just the race’s second year, we saw the race record that still holds up to this day. Ha Ha set the record for the Magic Million 3YO Guineas with a time of 1:20.38. Will that time be beat in the upcoming race? Only time will tell.
