Ranvet Stakes Tips, Betting, Odds, Horses & More 2025

The Ranvet Stakes is one of the biggest races on the calendar and it is on a day where there are four other Group One races at Rosehill Racecourse, one of the country’s top tracks. The Ranvet Stakes is one of the Group 1s that falls on Golden Slipper Day, with the other Group 1s at Rosehill Racecourse being The Galaxy, the George Ryder Stakes and the Rosehill Guineas. 

There is also the William Reid Stakes on the same day, at Moonee Valley Racecourse. Talk about being spoiled for choice! In total, there are six Group 1 races for us racing enthusiasts to feast on come Saturday, March 22.

We see some of the best middle-distance and staying horses come out to give the Ranvet Stakes a crack. The winner of the Ranvet Stakes is exempt from the ballot in the Trancred Stakes, the Queen Elizabeth Stakes as well as the Sydney Cup. All these races have over $1.5 million in prize money!

Ah, another small field! I can’t tell if I like tipping in a small field or not, but I don’t really have a choice, now do I? Only eight runners were announced in the final field, but that’s now been cut down even further as Riff Rocket has been scratched.

I have gone through each runner and put together my best bet, next best and best roughie for the race. There’s something for everyone here and I hope I’ve managed to find you a winner in the Ranvet Stakes!

Ranvet Stakes Best Bet - Via Sistina

After the amount of time I spent going through the field and tossing up all the options, I’ve decided it is much more difficult to pick a winner when there are fewer options. How that works, I don’t know! But I’m going to skip over the favourite in the market (at the time of writing) and I’ve settled on Via Sistina.

She is the second favourite and I think she is the one to beat here. Chris Waller has bigger things planned for Via Sistina, like the Queen Elizabeth Stakes. There’s not a lot of depth in this race, so I think she’ll get things all her way here. Let’s hope she can match the likes of Addeybb and Dubai Honour who both came from the Champions Stakes in Ascot before making the trip Down Under.

Ranvet Stakes Next Best - Buckaroo

I’m siding with Buckaroo as my next best, but he still isn’t that much value, considering how small the field is. At the time of writing, he is listed at $4.20. Never doubt Chris Waller, he knows what he is doing! He has got Buckaroo primed for this race, purposely missing other Group 1s to specifically target this one.

A low gate suits Buckaroo and will work well into his race strategy. He had a nice trial as well at Warwick Farm, I think he is ready for a big race here! As I’ve said before, there is a clear lack of depth in this race, so I think he’s got a good chance for a Group 1 victory!

Ranvet Stakes Best Roughie - Bois D’Argent

How do you find value in a market with only seven runners in it? With great difficulty, that’s how! In the end, I’ve gone with Bois D’Argent who is the biggest roughie of them all. He looks to be the likely leader from the beginning and with a race that doesn’t seem to have a lot of early speed, this could give him his best shot yet at winning a Group 1.

This may very well be one of his tougher tests, but in saying that, he did put in a great performance in the Caulfield Cup. While he doesn’t have as much class as others, he does have fight and should be in this for a long way. Let’s see if he’ll be able to hold on!

There’s so much to discuss when it comes to the Ranvet Stakes betting! If you’ve had a quick look online, you’ll realise just how many different horse racing betting sites there are and how many markets there are to bet on. It can become confusing, to say the least! But we’ve tried to simplify it as much as we can.

One of the smaller Group 1 fields we’ve ever seen for the Ranvet Stakes in 2024. Only eight runners were announced to take on the Ranvet Stakes, however, this was cut down even further as both Riff Rocket and Bois D'argent were scratched. So, now we have just six runners fighting it out for Group 1 glory!

Unfortunately, you’ll find that in horse racing, scratchings can happen from time to time, even in races like the Ranvet Stakes where there is $1 million in prize money up for grabs. A horse can get scratched at any time before the race, from a couple of days to just a couple of minutes before the jump. It’s important to note that if the horse you back is scratched, you will see your stake returned to your betting account.

While the barrier draw isn’t as vital in a race with a small field, it’s still another aspect that you think about when checking out the final field. Some barriers are more successful than others and particular runners have a certain racing style that suits a wider or inside barrier.

One of the important aspects to look for is the lead-up races. For the Ranvet Stakes, horses have many options to choose from and the common lead-up races include the Sky High Stakes, the Ajax Stakes as well as the Verry Elleegant Stakes.

You’ll find that in the past the Verry Elleegant Stakes has probably been the most popular lead-up race, with runners taking the step up from 1,600m to the 2,000m that is the Ranvet Stakes. When you look at the success of winners in the Ranvet Stakes in their lead-up race, 12 of the last 18 have finished either first or second. In 2024, winner Via Sistina contested the race first-up.

As the Ranvet Stakes is raced under weight-for-age conditions, you’ll find older runners are more successful as they have more experience under their belt. In fact, there have only been three winners of the Ranvet Stakes that have been under five years old in the past 18 years. Montefilia, a 4YO, did win the Ranvet Stakes in 2022 though!

While some races can be unkind to the favourite, this is not the case for the Ranvet Stakes! The favourite has a very good record in the race winning 11 times in the past 19 years. It is certainly worth checking out the favourite for the Ranvet Stakes, that’s for sure.

Mares don’t seem to have the best record in the Ranvet Stakes, so it could be a good option to avoid them. In the past decade or so, only four mares have gone on to win this race, which was Via Sistina, Montefilia, Verry Elleegant and Silent Achiever.

There have been so many amazing winners of this race and we only have so much space in this section, meaning we’ve had to be ruthless with our decision on who makes the cut.

Poseidon - 1908

The Ranvet Stakes was still in its infancy when Poseidon won the race in 1908. The stallion recorded many major wins throughout his career, but the biggest of all undoubtedly was the Melbourne Cup in 1906. He also won the Victoria Derby and the Caulfield Cup throughout his time and ended with a career record of 33:19-4-3.

Peter Pan - 1935

Peter Pan’s striking chestnut colour with a blonde mane and tail makes him a memorable stallion, but he was also a very successful racehorse, winning several key races including the 1935 Ranvet Stakes. He won the Melbourne Cup on two different occasions as well as the All Aged Stakes and the Australian Derby, just to name a few!

Sky High - 1962 & 1963

Sky High was an outstanding racehorse and won many races including the Ranvet Stakes in 1962 and 1963. He had a long career and his record ended at 55: 29-10-9, which included wins in the Golden Slipper, the Victoria Derby, the Champagne Stakes, the Winx Stakes and the Epsom Handicap.

Super Impose - 1991

Super Impose won eight Group 1s in his career which included the 1991 Ranvet Stakes. Throughout his career, he also won the Doncaster Mile and the Cox Plate, which helped him reach over $5 million in prize money. In 2007, Super Impose was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame.

Tie The Knot - 2000 & 2001

Winning 13 Group 1s throughout his career, it was no surprise that Tie The Knot was voted Australian Champion Stayer in 2000. Over two decades later, he was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. Some of the most notable races he won included the Verry Elleegant Stakes (on four occasions), the  Spring Champion Stakes and the Sydney Cup (on two occasions).

Avilius - 2019

Avilius ended up winning nine races in Australia, most of them with significant prize money attached to them! Along with the Ranvet Stakes, Avilius also won the Tancred Stakes and the King Charles III Stakes, all in 2019. He finished his career with almost $4 million in prize money.

Verry Elleegant - 2021

The 2020/21 Australian Racehorse of the Year, Verry Elleegant, captured the hearts of many Australians and she even has a race named after her. The Chipping Norton Stakes is now referred to as the Verry Elleegant Stakes, to honour the great mare. She won so many quality Group 1 races, but the victory most would remember would be the 2021 Melbourne Cup.

Before you go off and finalise any bets, it’s important to check out the Ranvet Stakes odds. The odds will tell you which runners the bookies think will win the race. If the odds are really low, it might not be worth backing that runner, instead, you could try and find some more value with another horse in the race.

The 2,000m Ranvet Stakes has carried the same name for almost three decades, but the race was originally known as the Rawson Stakes. The Ranvet Stakes takes place each year during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, which just happens to be one of the best and biggest horse racing carnivals of the year.

The race was first run back in 1902 and Lady Dawson was the inaugural winner. While the race is now run at 2,000m, it wasn’t always run at this distance. The Ranvet Stakes had several distances over the years until 1979 when it was run at the current distance of 2,000m (except in 2009 when the race was run at a distance of 1,900m and at Canterbury Racecourse).

The Ranvet Stakes was a Principal race all the way up to 1980 until officials upgraded it to Group 1 status. The most successful trainer in the Ranvet Stakes has to be TJ Smith, who won the race an astonishing 12 times, while his daughter, Gai Waterhouse, has won the race seven times (so far!).

Let’s get into the results of the latest Ranvet Stakes now! If you want to relive all the action, we’ve got you covered as we provide a full table with the finishing order of all the runners as well as a race replay video.

In 2024, the race was taken out by the favourite, Via Sistina. In the small field of just six runners, Via Sistina was able to put 1.2L between herself and second-placed Place Du Carrousel. Buckaroo wasn’t too far behind in third-place, just 1.3L off the pace.

In the end, due to the small field, there was only a total of 2.6L that separated the six runners. The 2024 Ranvet Stakes was run in a time of 2:04.49 and the second-favourite, Think It Over, couldn’t hold on and finished in fourth place.
