About the Rosehill Gold Cup

Racing NSW and Victoria continue to fight it out for who has the best Spring Racing Carnival and both states have introduced new high-profile races to lure the best horses, jockeys and trainers to their state.

One such newly introduced race in NSW is the Rosehill Gold Cup. The race isn’t a Group 1 race, however, the $750K in prize money is more than some of the official Group 1s on the calendar and therefore always attracts some of the best horses to NSW.

Sydney’s Spring Racing Carnival has seen many additions, including the likes of The Everest, The Golden Eagle and the Winner Stakes. With these new races, we now see at least one $1,000,000+ race across nine weeks of racing in NSW.

On Rosehill Gold Cup day, there are plenty of other races in both NSW and Victoria. In fact, including the Rosehill Gold Cup, there are six races on the same day. In Victoria, at Flemington Racecourse, there’s the Victoria Derby, Empire Rose Stakes and the Coolmore Stud Stakes

In NSW, at Rosehill Racecourse, there’s the Rosehill Gold Cup, The Golden Eagle and the Russell Balding Stakes. With so much racing happening on this day at Rosehill Racecourse, it’s no wonder it is considered by many to be one of the top tracks in the country and is always jam-packed with racing enthusiasts every weekend.

The team at OnlyRacing have every aspect of the Rosehill Gold Cup covered for you. From horse racing betting details to our best bet, next best and best roughie each year, you’re sorted! We also provide information on the field, form guide, results and more!

Rosehill Gold Cup Tips

Would you like some horse racing tips? Of course, you would! Well, you’re in luck because we have horse racing tips. We provide tips for every key race on the calendar, including the Rosehill Gold Cup. On top of this, we’ve got daily tips as well, so if it’s not Rosehill Gold Cup time, you can still sink your teeth into some tips.

In saying that, it is indeed not Rosehill Gold Cup time, so our tips for the upcoming race aren’t available just yet. This is probably not what you want to hear, but we’ve done you a solid and left up our best bet, next best and best roughie tips from the Rosehill Gold Cup in 2023.

As soon as the final field is confirmed for the Rosehill Gold Cup in 2024, we will get cracking on our tips. Check out all the juicy details below for the race in 2023:

Rosehill Gold Cup Best Bet - Shock ‘Em Ova

In a pretty open edition of the Rosehill Gold Cup, I’m siding with Shock ‘Em Ova, a $7.00 chance, as my best bet. He has been putting in some good performances recently, including back-to-back wins at the mile and 2,000m at Caulfield Racecourse.

He continues to step up in class and the Rosehill Gold Cup is on another level, but Shock ‘Em Ova has what it takes. Virtually no weight on this back, he should be absolutely powering across the finishing post. Like some of the other runners in this, a little luck on Shock ‘Em Ova’s side and he’ll be up to his eyeballs in this.

Rosehill Gold Cup Next Best - No Compromise

I like what Chris Waller has done with this gelding and his prep is building nicely. Put in back-to-back great chasing efforts over 1,500m and 1,900m. Then, he was sent out as one of the more favoured runners in the Group 3 Craven Plate.

Unfortunately for No Compromise, he was held up at two critical points which cost him the opportunity to put in a barn-storming finish. Has to carry more weight in this one, but I think he has a bit more class than some of these. I like that they've got Nash Rawiller on board as well. Definitely in the hunt for a top-three finish.

Rosehill Gold Cup Best Roughie - Sky Lab

Not the most value I’ve ever found, with Sky Lab currently listed at odds or $10, but $10 is still $10, so let’s get it! Like some of the others in this one, I think Sky Lab will need a little luck on his side, especially considering his racing pattern.

However, trainer Paul Perry has booked in the services of jockey Jason Collett which I think is a good move. It’s the same move that was made after a second place in the Summer Cup and then resulted in a win in a Magic Millions. If Sky Lab and Collett can get on the same page, good things could happen!

Don’t forget that our tips for the race in 2024 will be available during race week, so check back with us again soon.

Rosehill Gold Cup Betting

Each year for the Rosehill Gold Cup, you’ll notice there are plenty of betting options available. So, where do you even start? Well, it is always recommended that you only bet on markets that you fully understand. If you’re new to the world of horse racing, it may be best to stick with the humble Fixed Win or Place bet.

Not only are there plenty of markets available, but there are also heaps of Australian betting sites to choose from. Betting sites like PlayUp, Unibet and Dabble will all have markets available for the Rosehill Gold Cup.

If you already have a bookie account, it doesn’t mean you can’t open another one! In fact, we recommend having an account with multiple horse racing betting apps, so you can easily take advantage of the different promotions and odds available with the various bookies.

Betting sites bonuses will differ from bookie to bookie, so if you have multiple accounts, you can get more bang for your buck. When it comes to a race like the Rosehill Gold Cup, which draws a lot of attention, we usually find that bookies will offer more promotions to keep their punters happy.

It can also be a difficult choice whether to sign up for a more established bookie or go with one of the new betting sites available on the market. While new betting sites are likely to be smaller than their more established counterparts, they shouldn’t be discounted because they have some unique features.

Rosehill Gold Cup Field

If you’re looking for the Rosehill Gold Cup field information, you’ve come to the right place! Each year, when the field for the upcoming race is announced, we feature it in this section. While the 2024 Rosehill Gold Cup field hasn’t been announced just yet, you can see all the runners who lined up for the race in 2023.

If patience isn’t one of your best qualities and you want to get a little sneaky peek into the runners that might be lining up, you can check out the odds for the race. The odds are usually announced well before the final field is confirmed and will give you an indication of the runners who may be targeting the Rosehill Gold Cup.

For the Rosehill Gold Cup in 2023, we saw a field of 12 runners confirmed, with no emergencies listed. In the end, Renaissance Woman was scratched before the race and with no emergencies, the field was cut to 11 runners fighting it out for a hefty chunk of coin.

In horse racing, scratchings happen quite regularly, unfortunately. This is why it is important to keep an eye on things, especially if you’ve placed a bet. If you do place a bet on the runner that ends up being scratched, you will get your stake back, so there is nothing to worry about.

On top of scratchings, it’s also a good idea to look into the barrier draw. The bigger the field, the greater the influence of the barrier draw. However, this doesn’t mean that the barrier draw doesn’t matter at all when there’s a smaller-sized field. Each horse has its own running style which is better suited for an inside or wider barrier.

Rosehill Gold Cup Form Guide

With any race, it is a good idea to look into the form guide before placing any bets. The Rosehill Gold Cup form guide can provide useful insights and potentially point you in the direction of the next winner. Even though the Rosehill Gold Cup hasn’t been around for very long, it’s still worth checking out the form guide.

Already, some patterns have emerged which are important to follow as these key indicators can help you find a winner. You don’t have to do any of the heavy lifting though, we’ve gone through and found some key areas of note. Check out all the key form indicators we’ve found so far below.

The Rosehill Gold Cup is raced over a distance of 2,000m, which makes for an interesting race as we can see a mix of stayers and middle-distance runners making an appearance. With different types of horses coming into this race, it means there are plenty of form lines converging.

Some lead-up races that you should pay more attention to include the likes of The Metropolitan, St Ledger, Hill Stakes and the Craven Plate. All these races take place at Randwick Racecourse and are run over a similar distance to that of the Rosehill Gold Cup.

As the Rosehill Gold Cup is a fairly new race, there isn’t a lot of historical data to crunch, but here’s some key information about all the winners so far:

  • Wild Planet (2023) - 8YO gelding, barrier 8, weight 52kg, starting price $26.
  • Star Of India (2022) - 4YO horse, barrier 6, weight 54kg, starting price $9.00.
  • Think It Over (2021) - 6YO gelding, barrier 3, weight 59kg, starting price $2.70.
  • Costello (2020) - 5YO gelding, barrier 1, weight 54kg, starting price $31.
  • Tally (2019) - 7YO gelding, barrier 4, weight 59kg, starting price $4.00.

Rosehill Gold Cup Horses

While still one of the newer races on the calendar, we do see some of the best horses competing and winning the Rosehill Gold Cup. The Rosehill Gold Cup may not be a Group 1 race, but the prize money means the top horses going around will compete!

As the Rosehill Gold Cup has only been running for a handful of years, we do not have to make any tough decisions and can feature all the horses that have won this race. We go through all the Rosehill Gold Cup horses below and talk more about what they’ve achieved in their respective careers:

Tally - 2019

The first winner of the Rosehill Gold Cup, Tally (who was the favourite) got the job done by 1.3L in 2019. Tally tasted success at both Group 3 and Group 2 level, winning multiple times. Throughout his career, he contested 10 Group 1 races, finishing third twice, which helped him amass a prize money of $1,620,485.

Costello - 2020

Long-shot Costello won the 2020 Rosehill Gold Cup by just 0.3L. The gelding was lightly raced throughout his career, with an overall record of 29:6-4-3. He only contested two Group 1s in his career and was unplaced in both of them. He did have a fairly good strike rate when he was listed as the favourite; 4:2-1-0.

Think It Over - 2021

Think It Over is probably the biggest name so far to come out and win the Rosehill Gold Cup. The gelding is a multiple Group 1 winner, with wins so far in races including; Verry Elleegant Stakes, the Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the George Ryder Stakes. For more information on these races and more, check out our Group One races list!

Star Of India - 2022

Star Of India won the 2022 Rosehill Gold Cup by the narrowest of margins, 0.1L. The gelding hasn’t raced much yet throughout his career and at the time of writing he has a career record of 7:3-0-0. So far, he has contested one Group 1, where he finished unplaced.

Wild Planet - 2023

The 2023 winner of the Rosehill Gold Cup, Wild Planet, has so far won almost $2 million in prize money, thanks to a career record of 45:7-5-4. One of those second places came in a Group 1 race as well, as he finished 0.4L off the pace in the Doomben 10,000 back in 2021. Other than that, Wild Planet has tasted success at both Group 2 and Group 3 level.

Rosehill Gold Cup Odds

In the Rosehill Gold Cup puzzle, the odds form a key piece that you can’t forget about. The odds will show you which runners are more favoured in the market. However, it’s important to remember that even if a runner is listed at odds of something like $1.50, that doesn’t 100% guarantee that horse will win.

Anything can and sometimes does happen in horse racing. It doesn’t matter how much research or information you find, sometimes the racing gods have their own say on what’s going to happen! So, you shouldn’t shy away from horses listed at bigger odds.

Before the Rosehill Gold Cup, there will be plenty of horse racing markets to choose from. The closer we get to the race, the more markets you’ll be able to choose from. Some markets are more complex than others, so it’s a good idea to understand the market before placing your bets.

Our favourite bookie, PlayUp, hasn’t released their odds just yet for the Rosehill Gold Cup. We expect them to release their markets soon though, so we will be keeping an eye on things and bring you the Fixed Win market when it’s up and running.

If you can place your bets on the race when the market is listed as “Before Noms” this is ideal because you’ll likely be getting better odds for your runner. On top of this, if the runner you choose doesn’t end up making the final field, you’ll get your stake back. So, no harm, no foul!

Don’t forget to check back here soon as we will list all the odds from PlayUp once their market is up and running.

Rosehill Gold Cup History

The Rosehill Gold Cup doesn’t have a long history like some of the other key races on the calendar. This newly introduced race is part of a competition between Racing NSW and Racing Victoria to see who can have the biggest Spring Racing Carnival.

With all this action happening in both states, it’s no secret that they are one of the biggest horse racing carnivals of the year. There have been a handful of newly-minted races and we can expect this to grow over the years as the competition between the two states continues to heat up.

The Rosehill Gold Cup has only been running for a handful of years now but we have already seen some of the biggest names compete. It also helps that there is plenty of other racing happening at Rosehill Racecourse on the same day, so it draws the attention of casual and serious punters alike.

The race is run over a distance of 2,000m each year and is another great chance for middle-distance runners and stayers to get their hooves on some serious prize money. The winner of the Rosehill Gold Cup takes home the lion’s share of a whopping $750K. So, you can see why this race, even though it’s not technically a Group 1, still draws in a crowd.

The inaugural winner of the Rosehill Gold Cup was Tally back in 2019. It also provides a good option for Sydney-based trainers if they want to stay in NSW instead of travelling down to Victoria to fight it out for riches there.
