About The Five Diamonds

Introduced by Racing NSW in 2022, The Five Diamonds is one of the newest races on the calendar. It’s no secret that Racing NSW and Racing Victoria have been fighting it out in recent years to put on the best Spring Racing Carnival going around.

While traditionalists can’t go past Melbourne’s Spring Racing Carnival, with races like the Melbourne Cup, the Cox Plate, the Victoria Derby and the Caulfield Cup, there’s something to be said about all the cash that has been splashed in Sydney. There is now a raft of new races in Sydney’s Spring Racing Carnival, all with a mammoth amount of prize money.

The perfect example of this is The Everest, which runs each year at Randwick Racecourse and boasts prize money of $20 million. With so much prize money on offer in Sydney and the races all run around the same time, it has resulted in trainers, jockeys and other connections of runners needing to choose which state they are travelling to.

For The Five Diamonds specifically, while it doesn’t hold Group 1 status, there’s a cool $2 million in prize money on the line, which always ensures we see some of the best runners from Australia and the globe competing. The race is run at Rosehill Racecourse, which is one of the top tracks in Australia.

It is a race exclusively for 5YOs and is run under set weights (plus penalties) conditions. A weight penalty is applied to runners who meet certain criteria:

  • Group 3 winners or non-black type race runners with prize money between $250,000 and $500,000 are penalised 1kg.
  • Group 2 winners non-black type race runners with prize money between $500,001 and $1,000,000 are penalised 2kg.
  • Group 1 winners or non-black type race runners with prize money of more than $1,000,000 are penalised 3kg.

The Five Diamonds takes place on the same day as another fairly new race on the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival calendar, the Golden Gift. On top of this, these two races take place on the same day as the Champions Stakes, the Champions Mile and the Champions Sprint, all run at Flemington Racecourse.

The Five Diamonds Tips

Here at OnlyRacing, our experts live and breathe horse racing. From the minute they wake up until the minute they fall asleep, horse racing occupies the majority of their time. The team loves providing all horse racing information, but they have a soft spot for horse racing tips.

We provide horse racing tips for all the Group 1 races on the calendar on top of Rosehill tips to keep you going when there isn’t much Group 1 action. As The Five Diamonds is still a little while away, we can’t provide our tips just yet. Our experts are waiting until the final field is announced, so they have all the necessary information.

Until the final field is announced, which happens during race week, you can check out our The Five Diamonds tips for the race in 2023. Use the benefit of hindsight to judge how our experts performed. Here are all the details:

The Five Diamonds Best Bet - Antino

Coming into The Five Diamonds for 2023, Antino is the favourite, with current odds of $2.20. I like the look of a few of them in this one though and there’s certainly more value to be found around Antino. In saying that, Antino is the deserved favourite. He was great up in Queensland and he is back again with more quality performances during the Spring.

So far in Spring, he has won the Sandown Stakes and was narrowly defeated in the Toorak Handicap and the Crystal Mile. He’s as fit as any other runner and I think the step out to 1,800m is going to work in his favour. Jockey Sam Clipperton will give him every chance to win The Five Diamonds.

The Five Diamonds Next Best - Unspoken

I’m a little confused, to say the least. How is Unspoken pushing almost double digits for this one? He has come down a little in price, I saw him listed as a $10 pop earlier in the week and now he is a $7.50 chance. So others must be thinking what I’m thinking. I reckon get on quickly as he is only going to shorten further.

I get why Antino is the $2.20 favourite, I even put him as my best bet, but I don’t think Unspoken’s odds should be so high. He is undefeated so far this prep and in every run, it continues to get better. His performance last time out against Filante was excellent and more of the same would see him win this one.

The Five Diamonds Best Roughie - Democracy Manifest

I’m pretty sure I’ve said it before, but man do I love this guy's name! Honestly, it’s the reason I first started following him, but it didn’t take long for me to realise he has got some real talent. With current odds of $10, Democracy Manifest is my value play for the day and I like his chances almost as much as my best bet and next best for The Five Diamonds.

An easy Group 3 win in the books recently, beating the likes of Palmetto and Spangler, both of whom have gone on to win some key races since their respective defeats. He almost won the Epsom Handicap and he likes the track. A change in jockey to Nash Rawiller helps. I’m expecting a big race and will enjoy a succulent Chinese meal if he gets up.

Like the look of those The Five Diamonds tips? Well, make sure you check back again during race week for our 2024 tips.

The Five Diamonds Betting

Even though The Five Diamonds is a relatively new race, it has already drawn a lot of attention. It is considered a key race on the calendar and with that attention comes a wave of punters looking for The Five Diamonds betting information. Well, you’ve come to the right place as we go through all the key details you need to know.

You don’t need to be an experienced punter to develop a betting strategy for The Five Diamonds. In fact, there are really only two things you need to consider. Who you are going to bet with and what you are going to bet on.

In Australia, there is no shortage of horse racing betting sites to choose from. There are so many options in this country that it can be difficult to choose the right bookie. Now, you can always stick with a bookie you already have an account with, but if you’re in the mood for something different or don’t have a bookie account yet, this information is for you.

We recommend opening accounts with multiple bookies because this makes it much easier to take advantage of better odds as well as betting sites bonuses. Our bookie reviews page goes into detail about each of the top bookmakers in the country and covers areas like which have the best betting apps going around.

Some of the betting sites that you will see featured on our reviews page include; Betfocus, GoldenRush and Boombet. Betfocus, in particular, is one of the new betting sites available in Australia and we love their fresh focus on the world of betting.

Nailing down the bookie you are going to bet with for The Five Diamonds means your work is only half down. Now, you need to think about the market you are going to bet on for the race. Some of the most popular markets that are available with pretty much any Aussie bookie include:

  • Fixed Win/ Place bet
  • Quaddie at Flemington Racecourse.
  • Quinella
  • Trifecta
  • First Four
  • Quaddie
  • Multi bet

The Five Diamonds Field

While we don’t have a lot of history to go off, so far, we’ve seen a high-quality field take part each year in The Five Diamonds. The Five Diamonds field features both Aussie and international runners, all fighting it out for the lion’s share of the $2 million in prize money that is on offer.

Each year, The Five Diamonds field is announced during race week, so we don’t know the runners that will take part in the race in 2024 just yet. But it is a good idea to check out the odds, which are usually released well before the final field, as you can get a solid indication of the type of runners that are targeting The Five Diamonds.

As we can’t tell you which runners will be taking part in The Five Diamonds in 2024, we’ve left up the field table from the race in 2023. All the details about which runners competed in the 2023 race are below:

For the second edition of The Five Diamonds, we saw a full field of 14 runners confirmed for the race, plus four emergencies in case of any scratchings. In the end, the emergencies came in handy as we saw three pre-race scratchings. Hinged, Forgot You and Thalassophile were all scratched from the race, allowing entry into the field for the first three emergencies.

If you haven’t been around the world of horse racing for very long, it’s important to note just how common scratchings are. Even in some of the biggest races of the year, scratchings still occur. They can happen at any time as well, from when the final field is confirmed to just seconds before the race.

When it comes to the field, it is also a good idea to check out the barrier draw. Each runner will jump from a different barrier, from the barrier closest to the rail outwards. The bigger the field, the more emphasis on the barrier draw. On top of this, different runners have different running styles which can mean they are more suited for an inside or wider barrier.

The Five Diamonds Form Guide

With a race like The Five Diamonds, which has only been around for a handful of years, it’s tricky to put together an in-depth form guide. It’s always a good idea to check out the form guide before placing any bets as it can unveil patterns in the data and point you in the direction of the next potential winner.

While we don’t have enough data to see any patterns just yet, it’s still worth checking out the data, just to see what has happened in the past. One of the first things you should look into is the barrier draw, a full field of 14 runners for The Five Diamonds means more focus is placed on where each runner jumps from.

It does depend on each runner’s racing style, but an inside barrier could be beneficial as they may not have to do as much work at the beginning of the race. As The Five Diamonds is slated at 1,800m, some runners could be tiring at the end, so how the race starts out could play a major role in how much some horses have in the tank towards the end.

It also pays to look into the race tempo and speed map. Rosehill is a spacious track with one of the longer home straights, it can still favour those at the front, which means the expected race tempo can have a major influence over the end result of the race.

There will likely be different form lines converging for The Five Diamonds. However, some lead-up races may be worth checking out. These lead-up races include; the Epsom Handicap, the Rosehill Gold Cup, the Five Diamonds Prelude, the Hill Stakes and the Craven Plate.

Here are some of the key statistics of the winners so far in The Five Diamonds:

  • Unspoken (2023) - 5YO gelding, barrier 7, weight 56kg, starting price $7.50.
  • Ellsberg (2022) - 5YO horse, barrier 2, weight 59kg, starting price $3.30.

The Five Diamonds Horses

Even though The Five Diamonds has only been around for a short while at this stage, the timing of the race and the amount of prize money on the line means we see some of the best horses competing. The Five Diamonds horses come from right around the world, but there can only be one winner.

Unlike some of the other races on the Australian calendar, we don’t have to make any tough decisions when going through The Five Diamonds horses. We will feature every winning horse of the race in this section and speak more about their career and achievements.

Ellsberg - 2022

Ellsberg, with over $3 million worth of prize money in the bank, won The Five Diamonds in 2022. The stallion finished his career with a record of 24:9-6-4 and this included a record of 4:1-0-1 for Group One races. He won the Epsom Handicap before winning the Five Diamonds Prelude and then subsequently The Five Diamonds.

Unspoken - 2023

The Five Diamonds in 2023 was won by Unspoken, who has a current career record of 21:7-2-2. Thanks to his win in The Five Diamonds, Unspoken currently boasts prize money of $1,481,627. So far, he has only contested one Group 1 race and he was unplaced in that event.

The Five Diamonds Odds

If you’re going to bet on The Five Diamonds, you’ll need to know what the odds are. The shorter (i.e. lower) the odds are, the more likely that runner will win. So, if you choose to bet on a runner who is listed with odds of $1.50, for example, that runner would be the favourite for the race.

If you placed a $10 bet on that runner, your return would be $15 (including your initial stake). Remember, just because a bookie lists a runner with odds of $1.50, it doesn’t guarantee that runner will end up winning the race. We do see double-digit (and even the occasional triple-digit) winners in horse racing.

There are plenty of horse racing markets for you to choose from for The Five Diamonds. This means you don’t have to choose just one runner, you could place a Quinella bet, where you choose the first two runners of the race, in any order, for example. The closer we get to race day, the more markets will open up.

At this stage, our favourite bookie, PlayUp, hasn’t released their market for The Five Diamonds. We will keep an eye on things though and bring you all the information here when it becomes available. Usually, the first market to be released is the Fixed Win/ Place market.

As soon as we can, we will list The Five Diamonds odds below of all the more favoured runners in the market.

The Five Diamonds History

With just a handful of editions of The Five Diamonds, there isn’t exactly a lot of history to dissect. Despite its short history, it is certainly an interesting race that has already turned many years, mainly due to the ongoing rivalry between Racing NSW and Racing Victoria for the best Spring Racing Carnival.

The introduction of The Five Diamonds was announced by Racing NSW in February 2022 and along with The Five Diamonds, another race, The Big Dance was announced. The Big Dance now runs on the same day as the Melbourne Cup, which obviously didn’t make Racing Victoria very happy.

In 2022, The Five Diamonds was won by the pre-race favourite, Ellsberg and then in 2023, the race was won by Unspoken, who was a $7.50 chance. The Five Diamonds is in direct competition with Champions Day in Flemington, which features three key Group 1 races.

So, of these horse racing carnivals do connections of each runner head to? Well, it’s a difficult decision. The Five Diamonds encourages those trainers who are based in NSW to keep their 5YO runners in the state as there’s less travel involved and a whopping $2 million available.

Connections may also choose The Five Diamonds because it means 5YO runners don’t have to compete with younger horses. More attention is now on Sydney’s Spring Racing Carnival, which continues to dilute the quality of racing in Melbourne, as some runners choose to stay in (or even head to) Sydney.

The Five Diamonds Results

Couldn’t watch the race live and now want to know who won The Five Diamonds, or simply want to relive all the action? Well, our The Five Diamonds results section has all the key information you’ve been on the hunt for. We cover details like the finishing position of every runner in the race plus a full race replay.

For The Five Diamonds in 2023, Unspoken got the chocolates. The gelding jumped from barrier 5 and finished just 0.2L in front of Zoumon, who was ridden by Rachel King. Unspoken was on a flyer before The Five Diamonds, winning his three lead-up races before taking out this one.

In third place was Detonator Jack, who wasn’t too far off the pace either, just 0.53L behind the leader. The Jason Collett-ridden runner jumped from barrier 6 and was in the mid-field for a large portion of the race. The Five Diamonds was run in a time of 1:49.93 and there was a total of 13.27L that separated the entire field.
