The Golden Rose Stakes, a captivating Group 1 race, will mark the inaugural showdown for three-year-olds in the spring carnival. It is one of the biggest Group One races on the calendar. The race has emerged as a major quest for trainers and owners, who aim to flaunt their talented young horses in the hopes of securing a lucrative stud deal and/ or setting them on a path to further glory through the Spring Carnivals.

Adding to the thrill, the Golden Rose forms part of the recently unveiled "Golden Slam" at Rosehill. An astounding $5 million bonus awaits the runner capable of conquering the Golden Slipper as a 2YO, then the Golden Rose Stakes as a 3YO and then finally The Golden Eagle as a 4YO. 

The stakes are high and the pursuit of racing glory has never been more enticing. It is open to horses that were nominated for the Golden Slipper the previous season, while horses not nominated for that can pay a late entry fee.

Golden Rose Stakes Best Bet - Broadsiding

The number one horse jumping from barrier one, can he put in the trifecta for us and get the win here? I think so! He is the current $3.30, thanks to PlayUp and it’s easy to see why. He is a complete beast and his last two trials show that he is just as good as he was during the winter.

The winter I’m talking about? Oh, just back-to-back Group 1 victories in the Inglis Sires Produce Stakes and the JJ Atkins. His run in the JJ Atkins, in particular, was special. It was a 4.3L romp of a less-than-par field really. While there is Traffic Warden and Linebacker in this one, I still think he is class and is the one to beat.

Golden Rose Stakes Next Best - Linebacker

It’s fairly congested at the top of the market, with four of the 11 runners listed with odds of $6.50 or less. So, there was a lot of back and forth on who would take the position of the next best for the Golden Rose Stakes on Saturday. In the end, I’ve gone with Linebacker, who is currently on the fourth line of betting at $6.50, with PlayUp.

The lightly raced 3YO has already achieved a lot in his career and I’m expecting a sharp continued improvement here. He was a winner in his first two races and already has a Group 1 placing under his belt, from a total of just four career starts. Kerrin McEvoy steps up again here and I think he will enjoy the 1,400m. Could run over the top of them late.

Golden Rose Stakes Best Roughie - Emirate

For a little bit of value, I’ve landed on Emirate for the Golden Rose Stakes, who is currently paying $14 with PlayUp. Last time out, the 3YO finished fifth in the Run to the Rose, but chased hard, which shows he has some grit. That was the first time the Chris Waller-trained colt suffered defeat (he only has three career starts under his belt).

While he seems to be forgotten in the market, if he can jump cleanly, barrier three is a great barrier and the 1,400m should work well for him. I’m not convinced he’ll win, there’s just too much class in this one, but I certainly think he’ll give them a run for their money and could pinch a top three.

For the 2024 edition of the Golden Rose Stakes, we saw 11 runners confirmed. There weren’t any emergencies listed and as runner Daggers was scratched pre-race, the field was reduced down to just 10 runners.

It is annoying to learn that a horse is scratched from a Group 1 race like the Golden Rose Stakes, especially if it’s the horse you placed a bet on. Unfortunately, scratchings happen regularly in horse racing and it’s just a way of life. 

You should keep an eye on the final field to ensure you don’t miss when a horse is scratched. Along with this, it’s a good idea to look into the barrier each runner will jump from. Over the years, some barriers have been more successful than others and the barrier a runner jumps from can play a role in the way the race shakes out.

The Run To The Rose produces more winners than any other lead-up race. Another lead-up race that’s worth looking into is the Ming Dynasty Quality (Group 3). You should also look at runners who performed well the season before, in particular, races like the Golden Slipper and the Inglis Sires Produce Stakes.

The data shows that it is a good idea to pay attention to horses that have won their lead-up race. Since 2009, we have seen eight Golden Rose Stakes winners also win their previous race. In 2024, Broadsiding won the Golden Rose Stakes first-up, with just two trials under his belt.

While not many fillies take part in the race usually, it is also best to avoid them. Since 2003, we have only seen one filly win the Golden Rose Stakes. Broadsiding won the Golden Rose Stakes in 2024 as a 3YO colt.

When it comes to the barrier draw, since 2013, we have seen four winners jump from a double-digit barrier. So it isn’t as big of a hindrance for a runner to jump from a wider barrier when compared to some of the other key races on the calendar.

We don’t usually see blow-out roughies win the Golden Rose Stakes either. Since 2008, there have only been two winners that jumped with double-digit odds. In the same time frame, we have seen six  favourites go on to win the race. 

The Golden Rose Stakes has been around since 1978 and in that time, we’ve seen some of the best horses going around compete. There are plenty of Golden Rose Stakes horses that we could feature in this section, but we’ve made the tough decisions and narrowed it down to just a handful.

Kingston Town - 1979

Kingston Town was named the 1980 Australian Champion Racehorse of the Year and also won the Golden Rose Stakes in 1979. He ended his career with a very impressive record of 41:30-5-2 and he won races like the Cox Plate, the Tancred Stakes, the King Charles III Stakes and the Rosehill Guineas.

Flying Spur - 1995

Flying Spur won six races throughout his career and ended up gaining a total of over $2 million in prize money. He was named the Leading Sire in Australia during the 2006/07 season and won races like the Golden Slipper, the Australian Guineas and the All Aged Stakes.

Zoustar - 2013

Zoustar was a multiple-Group 1 winning horse but is mainly known as one of the most successful sires who has sired multiple stakes winners. He was lightly raced, only competing in nine races, but some of the races he won included; the Coolmore Stud Stakes along with the Golden Rose Stakes in 2013.

Trapeze Artist - 2017

Trapeze Artist won four Group 1 races throughout his career, including the 2017 Golden Rose Stakes. He amassed almost $6 million in prize money throughout his career and ended with a record of 20:7-1-3. Some of the biggest races he won in his career included; the TJ Smith Stakes, the All Aged Stakes and the Canterbury Stake.

The Autumn Sun - 2018

The Autumn Sun was crowned the Australian Champion 3YO Colt/Gelding during the 2018/19 season and he also won the Golden Rose Stakes during this time. He placed in every race he competed in and actually won all of them except one! Some of the key Group 1 races he won included; the J J Atkins, the Randwick Guineas and the Rosehill Guineas.

The Golden Rose Stakes odds will tell you which runners are more favoured in the market. For example, if the runner you’re looking at has odds of $2.05, then they are likely to be the favourite and therefore the most likely to win according to bookies. 

Remember though, just because a runner is more likely to win doesn’t mean they will actually go on to win. Roughies win all the time in horse racing, so it can pay to look around at other runners. There are plenty of horse racing markets as well, so you can bet on multiple runners to finish in the top three, as a Trifecta, for example.

Having commenced as a Group 2 race under the name Peter Pan Stakes, the event retained this classification until 2002. Following the inception of the Golden Rose Stakes, it transitioned to an unlisted status while maintaining a remarkable prize pool of $1 million. 

Recognising its significance and grandeur, the race ascended to its rightful place as a Group 1 event in 2009, solidifying its status as a pinnacle of 3YO racing excellence. Taking place on the same thrilling day is the Group 2 Golden Pendant, adding to the electric atmosphere of the occasion. 

As tradition dictates, 3YOs typically make their way to the Golden Rose Stakes through a lead-up run in the Group 2 Run To The Rose, a riveting 1,200m battle contested at Rosehill a fortnight prior.
