About The Goodwood
The Goodwood is one of the biggest Group One races that takes place in South Australia each year. It is a race for 3YOs+ and runs under set weights with penalties conditions at a distance of 1,200m. The race forms a major part of Adelaide’s Autumn Racing Carnival and is actually the final major race in the carnival before the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.
Some of the other Group 1 races that take place each year at Morphettville Racecourse include; the Robert Sangster Stakes, the Australasian Oaks and the South Australian Derby. With all this racing taking place, it’s no wonder many consider Morphettville Racecourse to be one of the top tracks in the country.
Each year, we see an attractive field of quality sprinters fight it out for Group 1 glory and the $1 million in prize money that comes with it. The Goodwood was first run all the way back in 1881 and won by D.O.D. We will go into more history-related information in our “History” section later on this page.
We have seen some of the best horses in history go on to win The Goodwood including Takeover Target and Black Caviar. Each year, if a runner can finish in the top two at the Tobin Bronze race held two weeks before The Goodwood, they are exempt from the ballot.
The team at OnlyRacing.com.au have put together this comprehensive look into The Goodwood. We will cover every little thing you could ever need to know about the race including information on tips, betting and odds. Along with this, we will provide information about the field, form guide, horses and results.
We will continue to update this page each year before and after the race, so you will always have the most accurate and up-to-date information. So, be sure to check back here again on race week for all the information about the upcoming race!

We know you are excited about this Group 1, but you’ll have to wait a little longer! We have left up our tips from The Goodwood in 2024 though. Check out our expert’s tips for The Goodwood below:
The Goodwood Best Bet - Oscar’s Fortune
Man, oh, man, this is a tough field! There are plenty of live hopes in this race and there isn’t a clear favourite at the time of writing. In the end, I’ve landed on Oscar’s Fortune, as I’m willing to take on Amelia’s Jewel and Benedetta, who are both currently listed around the $4.00 mark.
A third place in The Quokka is a great credential considering the field for that race was jam-packed. Over his nine-race career, Oscar’s Fortune has won on five occasions and placed a further four times. He is placed at Group 1 level as well and with jockey William Pike making the trip, I think Oscar’s Fortune has his best chance to win a Group 1.
The Goodwood Next Best - I Am Me
It’s as strong of a field for The Goodwood as I’ve seen in many years, so it was also tough to nail down my next best. I’ve ended up landing on I Am Me, who is currently listed at odds of $7.00, so pretty good value for a next best bet. The race looks to lack a little bit of tempo, so this could set up Blake Shinn perfectly.
I Am Me should have things all her way, especially in the beginning, from barrier one. If she can settle in front, I think her competition will have a massive challenge on their hands running her down. Yes, she’ll need a smidge of luck, but if she gets it, watch out! Let’s see what I Am Me can do come Saturday.
The Goodwood Best Roughie - Arkansaw Kid
Massive longshot, I know, but I’m rolling the dice with Arkansaw Kid for my best roughie tip. Poor ride from Mark Zahra two weeks ago in the Tobin Bronze. Arkansaw got into a decent position in that race and then a massive brain fade by Zahra meant he couldn’t be let down properly.
The wide barrier doesn’t really concern me, I think he just needs to get in a good spot in the field and a more positive ride could really make people look. He just needs some room to move and then he could really go bang at massive odds, listed at $41 at the time of writing. He can threaten them and potentially even run in the top three. Willing to take a chance.

The Goodwood Field
We always see an epic field for The Goodwood each year and we don’t expect anything different in 2025. We don’t yet know which runners will be taking part in The Goodwood for 2025, but we will bring you all this information as soon as it becomes available.
Along with the field, we will also showcase the odds for The Goodwood in our “Odds” section below. We think it’s a good idea to check out the odds as soon as they are available because it will give you a solid indication of which runners are more favoured in the market.
While we wait for the final field to be confirmed, check out the details below to see which runners made an appearance in The Goodwood in 2024:
No. | Horse | Trainer | Jockey | Barrier | Weight |
1 | VILANA | James Cummings | Todd Pannell | 16 | 59kg |

7 | BENEDETTA | Jason Warren | Ms Jamie Kah | 3 | 55kg |
8 | ARKANSAW KID | Ben, Will & JD Hayes | Billy Egan | 17 | 54.5kg |
9 | JOHNNY ROCKER | Nick Ryan | Rhys McLeod | 12 | 54.5kg |
10 | RUBAMOS | Aaron Bain & Ned Taylor | Jacob Opperman | 2 | 54.5kg |
11 | WHAT YOU NEED | Mick Price & Michael Kent (Jnr) | Craig Williams | 11 | 54.5kg |
12 | KARACASU | Richard & Chantelle Jolly | Jason Holder | 4 | 54.5kg |
13 | GRINZINGER PRINCE | Cody Reardon | Ms Emily Finnegan | 10 | 54.5kg |

16 | SKYBIRD | Mitchell Freedman | Beau Mertens | 5 | 53kg |
17 | STRETAN ANGEL | Phillip Stokes | Daniel Stackhouse | 7 | 52.5kg |
Another year, another field of 17 runners! In 2024, we saw 17 runners confirmed for the race. There weren’t any emergencies listed either, so the field will be reduced if a runner is scratched. In the end, we saw two scratchings, Vilana and Learning To Fly.
If you’re new to the world of horse racing, it won’t take you too long to figure out that scratchings happen fairly regularly. Why do they happen? Well, there are several reasons why. For example, if a runner is a dual acceptor or upon vet’s advice. If you have a bet on The Goodwood and the horse you picked is scratched, you will get your bet stake back.
When looking through The Goodwood field, something else you should consider is the barrier draw. The barrier each runner jumps from can play a major role in how the race shakes out. When the field is on the larger side, the barrier draw tends to have more influence as well.
The Goodwood Form Guide
The Goodwood has been around for a long time and that means there is a lot of data to sift through. When putting together the form guide, it is important to look at all the relevant data as it can help point you in the direction of the winner.
It can be a lot of work going through all the stats and finding those nuggets of gold that can help you. We know that you may not have time to do the form guide yourself, which is where we step in. We’ve gone through all the important information and put together some key form indicators that you should know. Check out all the details below!
First things first, we always start with the best lead-up races. We’ve found that horses trained outside of South Australia have a fairly strong record. Some of the best local lead-up races like the RN Irwin Stakes and the DC McKay Stakes.
On top of this, fillies and mares coming out of the Robert Sangster Stakes may also contest The Goodwood. The 2024 winner, Benedetta, finished third in the Robert Sangster Stakes before going on to win The Goodwood.
Speaking of fillies and mares, they don’t really have a solid record in The Goodwood. Although, we did see Benedetta win the 2024 race as a mare. Before Benedetta, there hadn’t been a mare that won The Goodwood since 2013. For fillies, we’ve only seen two win the race in the past 34 years.
Favourites also tend to have a poor record in The Goodwood. In the past 35 years, only five favourites have gone on to win The Goodwood. When looking into the favourites that won, they included the likes of Black Caviar and Takeover Target! In the past 35 years, we’ve seen double-figure winners on 21 occasions.
It seems as though runners trained in Victoria have a good record in The Goodwood. In the past 20 years, we’ve seen 15 winners that have been trained in Victoria. Geldings have a good record as well, especially those aged between four and six. Geldings between four and six have won on nine occasions in the last 11 years.
The Goodwood Horses
You probably already know by now that The Goodwood has been running for many, many years now. Over the history of the race, we’ve seen so many amazing horses compete and go on to win. With so many The Goodwood horses to choose from, we’ve had to make some brutal cuts.
We wish we could feature all the horses in this section, but we only have room for a handful. Hopefully, you agree with the choices we’ve made! Each horse we feature in this section is one of the best ever horses to compete in the industry. So, check out which horses made the cut below:
Takeover Target - 2009
Takeover Target competed in races all around the world, including; Australia, the United Kingdom, Japan and Singapore. During his time in racing in Australia, the gelding won several key races including; the Newmarket Handicap, the Doomben 10,000 and the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes, just to name a few. He was named the 2006 Australian Champion Sprinter.
Black Caviar - 2012
The Peter Moody-trained Black Caviar was one of the best-ever Australian racehorses and has a famous career record of 25:25-0-0. In 2013, the mare was first in the World Thoroughbred Rankings! She won some pretty major races in her career like the TJ Smith Stakes, the William Reid Stakes and the Newmarket Handicap.
Black Heart Bart - 2016
Black Heart Bart won six Group 1 races throughout his career and ended up with a mammoth $4,818,580 in prize money. He won the Memsie Stakes, the CF Orr Stakes and the Futurity Stakes. The well-raced gelding ended his career with a record of 62:17-15-4.
Trekking - 2020
The multiple-Group 1 winning gelding won The Goodwood in 2020. Throughout his career, he won 10 races, which helped him amass almost $6 million in prize money. His biggest-ever career win would likely have to be the Stradbroke Handicap.
The Goodwood Odds
It’s not too difficult to find The Goodwood odds because many of the best horse racing betting apps will release odds well before the event. This means you can get your bets on earlier than you may think. You’ll notice that when the market is released, the odds will be constantly changing.
Many factors influence a change in horse racing markets and each bookie has slightly different factors that they take into consideration. This is why you may see the odds for the same runner at a different price at various bookies.
Our favourite bookie at the moment, PlayUp, has not yet released its odds for The Goodwood. This means you’ll have to wait a little bit longer if you’re looking to get your bets on. When the time is right, hopefully you’ll be able to find some value in the market!
One of the things we recommend when it comes to The Goodwood odds is to bet as soon as you can. If you’re betting when the market is listed as “Before Noms”, you’ll get your stake back if your chosen runner doesn’t make the final field. You’ll also usually find that the prices are higher for several runners, especially compared to if you bet on the day of the race.
Take a look below at all The Goodwood odds in 2024 for every runner in the race, taking just a couple of days before the event:

The Goodwood History
The Goodwood was first run in 1881 and won by D.O.D. Since then, there have been several changes to the race we know and love today. Up until 1979, The Goodwood was listed as a Principal race, then from 1980 onwards, it gained Group 1 status.
The race was previously run under handicap conditions, this all changed in 2007 after officials changed The Goodwood to be run under set weights and penalties conditions, to attract a higher quality field. This also resulted in a change in the race name, which was from the Goodwood Handicap to The Goodwood.
There have been a couple of changes in the distance of The Goodwood as well. From 1881 to 1885, the race was run at a distance of 1,600m. There were a couple of occasions when the race wasn’t held for various reasons, between 1886 and 1888, as well as 1942 and 1943.
The Goodwood marks the final week of the Autumn Racing Carnival held at Morphettville Racecourse, which just happens to be one of the biggest horse racing carnivals in South Australia. The Goodwood falls between Sydney’s Autumn Racing Carnival and Brisbane’s Winter Racing Carnival.
Walter Hickenbotham is the most successful trainer in The Goodwood with five victories spanning from 1901 to 1910. Jockey John Letts is leading the way with five wins in The Goodwood, spanning from 1961 to 1984.
There are so many Group 1 races on the calendar each year in Australia, there is quality racing almost every weekend of the year! If you’d like to learn more about some of the other races that are on the calendar, you can do so by checking out our Group One races list.

It was another roughie that wrapped up the final minor placing in Climbing Star, who jumped with odds of $20. The race in 2024 was run in a time of 1:10.57 and we saw just 4.8L separating the entire field of 15 runners.
